Default KCCC - feels like 'plastic' coating?

Anyone else get a 'plastic coating' feel to their hair w/ KCCC? KCKT was not in stock when I bought the KCCC so I've been using Aubrey Organics (honeysuckle rose) as a leave-in under it.

My hair is incredibly coarse, with a bizarre mix of frizzy/coarse/coily chunks and somewhat smooth/wavy chunks and kinky/coarse/straight chunks. Best results thus far come from adding handfuls of conditioner-mixed-with-oil and no protein. Still, no matter what combo I try, the best I can do is get about 3/4 through the day before everything gets dry, dull, and did I mention dry? Curl dissipates and I look like I just got out of bed. sigh. How DO you all get those smooth, glossy curls?????

Anyway, it seems that KCCC is bringing me closer to where I want to go (as long as I put a moisturizing leave-in underneath and a gel on top or mixed in) .... except I can't STAND this plastic-y feeling!!! SOTC (with or without a bit of oil, or Jane Carter Nourishing & Shine) only succeeds in pulling out more curl, and it gets dull again.

Am I the only one???? Any suggestions????

Hi. Well, i'm still pretty new to the whole CG thing so others might be of more help, but all this week i have been thinking how GR8 KCCC is for my hair. It is the only thing i have used so far that has left my hair super glossy and has left me with better curls. I was struggling for a bit to find somethign that worked and i am happy i did, but i hate that it hasnt worked for you! My hair is also coarse and it is naturally 3C- but recently i had been getting 3B- 2C results!!! KCCC has given me my 3C back! The combo that i found works best is One Conditioner from Devacurl as a leave in and this on top! I havent really played around with it too much but this is my best combo. i also have CK (Curl Keeper) to use when it gets warmer out in the east coast. But One Conditioner and just KCCC (no additional gel) has left my hair super glossy!!!! AND TRUST ME my hair is crazy dry! My only con is the crunchiness! Good luck!

Thanks for describing how you're using the KCCC. So you're not getting any 'coated' plasticy/rubbery feeling then? Just crunch that you are able to scrunch out?

I've never heard of anyone using AOHR as a leave-in. I would guess that has something to do with the plastic feeling because it is so thick and rich.

Also, could it be possible that you used too much KCCC? The only time my hair ever feels coated from KCCC is if I use too much or if I went overboard with a gel on top of it.

I don't think it's the AOHR - I use it all the time with other combos.

I've also experimented with various amounts of KCCC, including emulsifying it in my hands with other products (gel, curl cream, conditioner, tiny amounts of oil) and that feeling is always there.

It's mostly just a 'me' thing... certain textures just drive me nuts (and yes, I know I'm not supposed to touch my hair but it's a habit I can't seem to break!!)

Thanks for the input... I'm thinking maybe it's just me. =)

KCCC does not always play well with oil heavy leave-ins. I'd use a lighter leave-in and see what that does.

Didn't know that! In general, my hair doesn't play well without the oil.... so I think this will have to be a weekend experiment!!

Your hair sounds exactly like mine - in texture, in the way it behaves, in the curls just quitting on you halfway through the day.

Today was my first day with KCCC mixed with ArcAngell, and I got great results. My conditioner/leave in was OneC, which isn't as heavy as AOHR. I tend to only use AOHR if I'm VERY dry, as it really weighs down my curl, so be careful how much of that you're using with KCCC.

Same here, except for no additional gel. I have glossy, well formed curls with KCCC. Sometimes it's just a matter of how you put it in, which I hear can be trial and error.

Yeah, like I mentioned, I've had my issues with AOHR being too heavy, and I have really dry hair. OneC conditioned my hair enough, and seems to be working well today with the KCCC/ArcAngell combo. I don't know if it'll keep working for me (products have a tendency to quit on me after a few days to a week), or how KCCC will work if I do the occassional switch to AOWC once in a while. I guess we'll see!

I wonder if the plasticy feel you're experiencing is from how you're using it. Are you working it all through your hair? Maybe using too much? From what I've been told - and I'm very new to KCCC also - there's a bit of a learning curve for how to use it. That may be why it feels weird to you, so keep experimenting, because it seems like really great stuff! Good luck!

Wow, what great and thorough responses!

Good question about how I'm using it.... tried the 'scrunch' method, tried raking, also tried just trying to lightly 'coat' in sections (I guess that's kind of like raking?), tried combing through. I'm pretty sure it's the actual product and not the method - although from some of the posts I've read about this product I shouldn't be too convinced of that!!

The AOHR is something new for me, over the years the only thing I've found to work consistently is if I mix about 1/2 cup of olive oil into a large bottle of suave (vanilla floral is the latest) and use that as my leave-in. TONS of it - if I don't get a coating on every section of hair then all it does is fluff out - no curl formation (no matter what else I use with it!)

So far, there's been no such thing as 'getting weighed down' for me in terms of volume. To get curls (and only SOME chunks will curl - some stay straight/smooth, some straignt/coarse and some wavy) I really need something that heavy. I do know when I hit the 'used too much KCCC' stage because the parts that usually go into coils get TOTALLY and crazily coiled, and the parts that are straighter get SUPER straight and won't blend in at all.

If it wasn't so frustating it'd be funny. Even my "curl expert" hair stylist is totally baffled by this mess. I seriously think when I got made I must have gotten all the leftovers from everyone else's hair!!!! =)

I just now ordered the KCKT (and a new tub of the KCCC) and will give that a go.

When I first used KCCC a couple of years ago that's what it felt like to me too! But I began to use it again about a year and a half ago with a leave-in conditioner beneath and I love it. Any of the below conditioners work as a leave in for me. I also scrunch a butter-type product on my ends. When dry my hair feels silky and smooth. There is some crunch that is easily scrunched out. And 99.9% of the time I get second and even third day hiar.

Conditioners I can leave in:
Knot Today
Abba Nourishing (like Knot Today)
Mop Top Daily conditioner
Deva Blonde OneC
Curl Junkie Honey Butta leave in
Robert Craig
John Masters (mostly rinsed out)
Suave Naturals
Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Milk
CHE Hello Hydration
Beauty Without Cruelty leave-in

Pretty long list.

Suburbanbushbabe - what a fantastic list, thank you SO much. How in the world do you remember everything that worked/didn't work??? I have a heck of a time remembering what I did yesterday in order to try to re-create it today!!!

I plan on adding a couple of those to my wishlist for sure... and am really looking forward to trying the KCKT when it arrives. "Silky and smooth" sounds like a winner to me!

Theres an old thread somewhere that covers this: that rubbery feeling KCCC leaves you with. As I recall (i no longer use it) it was only the first few times I used it (this product is known for having a HUGE learning curve). IMO Kccc works best over KCKT.

I only remember what worked. That's why I keep a Fotki.

Personally, I've never had an issue with oils and KCCC. I've used straight oils as a leave in, Donna Marie L&T, KBB Hair Milk, and loads of others without so many oils. SheaM, Knot Today, Giovanni Direct LI (may contain oils, not sure). Regardless all of these leave-ins have worked for me with KCCC.

If your hair likes oils you may want to try the Aubrey Organic's White Camilla. It's more oil-heavy than the AOHR. I have the tendency towards dryness (probably not as much as yours) and this will weigh down my hair if I use it too much. Regardless, it's a great moisturizing condish and I love it as a DT.

elissad - thank you! And... I use the White Camellia too. I just haven't mentioned it because I don't see a lot of folks here mentioning it, but I knew the "AOHR" would be familiar. I

They're both great leave-ins for me, way better than when I mix oil into conditioner on my own. It's SO expensive though, given the amounts I need for it to help. =)

Thumbs down not loving KCCC

Yep I agree. The KCCC makes your hair feel like rubber as you apply it. Then I didn't care for the crunch...but to be fair it is a gel so you would expect that. Some of the die hard users on You tube admitted to this rubbery feel and crunch also but they live with it because of the result- I'm going to pass on this one. I'm returning it to Whole Foods.
