Default Curly Bobs Unite! What's to like about it.

With all the talk about Spring haircuts, we seem to be getting a lot of interest in curly bobs. Thought I'd start a thread, so we wouldn't be guanoing all of the others! Lots of us have them and love them. Lots of you are thinking of getting them. Forget who did a list of why they like theirs, but thought I'd get it all in one place.

I've had mine for about a year. Starting out a little longer (almost shoulder length) and now a few inches shorter--depending on where I am in the haircut cycle. I usually get mine cut every six weeks. I keep the length from my avatar to signature pictures--that's about how much it grows in six weeks, even in the winter.

It's easier to maintain. Looks good almost all of the time. Uses very little product. The only drawback is that I can't pull it back if I would need to.

Kathy, I'm going to my first appointment with Carlos (formerly of Devachan, and highly recommended in NY), and I'm probably going for around a chin-level bob - that's around your length, right? I have pictures to bring to Carlos of what I want and what I don't want so he's sure.

From all the good things posted about Carlos, I'm sure you'll get a great cut. Dry, my hair is about two inches below chin length right now. I'm overdo for a hair cut (Wed.) It probably starts out about an inch below when it's dry.

Mine is an inverted bob--are you going to go with that? or start out straight across the back?

Probably inverted - I have some inverted pictures that I love, and the layers are left a little longer, so I love that. Straight across tends to look mushroomy and makes me look older.

You're such a mind reader kathymack! With all of our talk of bobs lately, I was planning on starting a thread where we could collect tips and tricks and just info about curly bobs.

I love my bob It's just at chin length dry. I woke up this morning and I didn't have to do anything to it and voila, second day hair. I'll be talking about this magical phenomenon on my blog later today when I get a chance.

It makes me feel very spring feverish. It's so light and bouncy and very carefree. The fact that I can't put it up
hasn't bothered me at all. It's just awesome!

ETA: I should probably note that my bob is NOT inverted. There are a couple of pieces in the front that she made a little longer to make it more fun and flirty, but there isn't any sort of graduated angle or stacking in the back.

I started cutting my hair short, bob-esque, when I was 14 so it's been 10 years of going back and forth between long and short hair.

Sometimes I love my short hair. It's easy to style and drying time is short. Also, it only takes one bottle of hair dye instead of two. And, generally it always looks cute. But there are definite drawbacks. I can't pull it back and sleep-wise my curls tend to get crushed easier than when it's long. And sometimes I get tired of looking "cute". Long hair gives more styling options and I can choose another look.

I cut my hair short for the first time about 3 years ago. Before that, i had never had my hair shorter than shoulder length. I looove it short now. While I do miss the styling options of having long hair, i think the shorter hair suits me better.

I tried the inverted bob for a while, but my hair just felt too heavy in the front, especially since I do a side-part. Now I just need a trim...I'm trying to be good and holding that off until April

Your bob looks gorgeous in your avatar! So shiny..

Anyhoo, I've found that plopping with a bob is a bad idea. Smushed curls galore. So as a tip, personally I find cutting out the plop is a good one.

I've also found that my bob loves a thin headband. I think this would look especially cute with a tighter curl pattern than mine.

Mine's about the length of Kathymack's signature pic since I got it cut a little over a week ago. I'll be growing it back out right away as was my intent.

It's easy and looks fine now that's curling OK again, but it's just too limiting. I love being able to wear mine all sorts of ways (I'm a Gemini ), and I just can't at this length. I only cut it in the first place to get rid of old highlights that were picking up too much henna. I've had it this length many times over the years, but I never stick with it.

ETA: I totally agree with no plopping. I can only plop once my hair is at least shoulder length, and not even then if the canopy layers aren't fairly long, too.

As I mentioned in another thread, I just got my hair cut short (inverted bob, chin length when curly and dry) for the first time in over 20 years! I had long hair for sooooo many years and I was ready for a cut, a real STYLE ya know? I LOVE my bob and since getting this haircut I am no longer afraid to cut my hair however I want it.

My mother traumatized me as a child because she couldn't deal withmy curly hair so she cut it about 3 inches all around when i was in 1st grade and it looked TERRIBLE. So glad I am over that phobia of cutting my hair.

Are you diffusing? I haven't tried that yet with my bob, just air drying so far and I wish I had more volume on top although I think that is partly due to the new products I've been using. TIA

I definitely partially diffuse. I don't get enough volume just air drying, especially on top, even with clipping.

I haven't tried it yet. It's on my hair to do list! Haha so many new things to try. I've basically got to try everything that I used to use with longer hair with the bob to see the difference. I'm working my way through the combos, rinsing methods, and styling methods. In fact, I'm thinking I'll try clipping today when I wash (clipping with long hair for me was a waste of time..did do anything..but when my stylist used clips on me in the salon with the bob they worked really well)

Just sticking my nose in to say how much I love all your bobs. I haven't had that cut in awhile but it is my absolute favorite length on me, and everyone else for that matter.

When the time comes and I no longer spend so much time at the beach, in Jeeps, and on Harley's, I'll go back to wearing a chin length inverted bob. I just love them.

Did I mention how much I love a curly bob? : )

Some of us talked a little about diffusing in this thread. I spend my five minutes doing the top upside down--it's how I get the root lift.

I saw that. I'm sure diffusing it is going to give me some volume! Of course, I've got to try diffusing with different product combos and clipping versus not clipping. Sigh so many experiments and so little shower time!

Hee, thanks! I wish it still looked like that right now, but alas, it's just extremely frizzy and kinda blah right now. I want to buy new products so badly, but I'm currently in the process of moving back to GA and since I already have products back there that I need to use up...I really shouldn't buy more now to fix it

I try plopping every once in a while, but my curls tend to end up kinda flattened when i do it. I stick to diffusing, although I probably do this too much, as I hate walking around with wet hair.

Headbands have been my best friend lately being stuck here in extremely windy Texas. I like the headbands made up of 2 thinner strips that are fused together at the end.

I just recently cut most of my relaxed ends off, leaving me with a CURLY BOB! I have to say, it is very very easy to fix 2nd day hair. I also diffuse to add that extra volume. I don't mind not being able to pull it up. Normally I just pin the sides up with bobbypins. Someone mentioned feeling spring feverish with the short hair..I agree

I got my curly bob over a week ago, went from shoulder blade length to a couple inches past chin. I absolutely LOVE it! I was terrified I'd lose curl, but this cut has actually enhanced my curl beyond belief.

I do think I need to stop plopping, however, I have a dumb question. When you don't plop, do you have some special way of getting your shirt over your head that won't smash your wet curls and mess everything up? This is why I am having a hard time giving up plopping. I know it is not good for this cut, but I like being able to pull any kind of shirt on, even a turtleneck, and the plop protects everything. Is there some simple, fool-proof thing I am not thinking of??
