Unhappy MOP-C **UPDATE** Build Up issues

To spare anyone who doesn't want to read the entire thread:

I've done more research and Mop-C may be more prone to build up because the formulation does not contain a strong enough surfactant. Often when a product contains certain "hard to remove" ingredients the formulation will include some type of surfactant to ease removal. Again, not everyone will experience build up. It took me 3 weeks to have it catch up to me. See Post#55 for most recent update.

Mop-C Ingredients: Water (Aqua) (Eau), Steareth-21, Sorbitan Stearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Polyquaternium-11 VP/VA Copolymer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Ascorbyl Palmitate (*Vitamin C), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (*Vitamin C), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract**, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract**, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract**, Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Disodium EDTA***, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil Caprylyl Glycol, Limonene, Phenoxyethanol.

Deva SMU-Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Aqueos Extracts of: Achilea Millefolium, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Cymbopogon Schonanthus, Humulus Lupulos (Hops), Melissa Offcinalis (Balm Mint), Rosemarinus Offcinalis (Rosemary); Ceteareth-20, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG-5 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Propylene Glycol, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuaco) Seed Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit Oil, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Blue 1, Yellow 5

I thought it might be the polyquat 11 but CK has Polyquat 10 and I used TONS of it last summer with only co-washing???

This is exactly why I strongly believe in rotating products! I'm so ANNOYED because I've been using Mop-C every wash for about 3 weeks. This week I'v noticed my hair isn't soaking up water and I"m not getting that slippery feel in the shower. So I've done a Low Poo 3X this week but it's not helping. I did a sulphate poo and an ACV and it's STILL not much better my hair feels coated and kind of stiff?! Am I over washed and dry now? I don't look especially frizzy though???

Where do I go from here? Do I Low Poo tomorrow or is it better to leave it alone and low poo in 2 days? Another ACV??? I usually get rid of build up in one wash why is this lingering?? It just never ends!!!! One thing works and then another FAILS

If you've washed that many times, I'd say it's got to be out of your hair. Does MOP have protein? It sounds more like a protein problem than anything else. I personally wouldn't wash it anymore...maybe a moisture DT and see if that helps the stiffness?

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.

No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

That happened to me too. I used a sulfate poo to get it out.

Has the weather changed at all? Have you changed any other products that you use with it (maybe it doesn't play nice with something else you're using)?

Maybe stop using it for a week or so. If your hair gets better, you'll know that Mop-C is just not your friend anymore....

(I couldn't stand Mop-C. Instantly felt terrible on my hair. I always assumed it was the polyquat...)

I'm assuming it's the polyquat as well which is why it gives me such fantastic hold!! UGH....dews are slightly higher then lower again but no drastic weather changes. I don't think it's protein? I'm not using anything new with protein? I was thinking it was Mop cuz my hair was feeling nice then I would put the mop in and it would start feeling weird but I thought that was the product doing it's job. My hair usually takes forever to dry but with Mop it seemed like my hair was just EATING it, I didn't think it was a bad thing until the last two washes I couldn't get that coated feeling OUT of my hair.

I also started using the Deva Set Me up Pomade on dry hair I hope THAT isn't my problem

It might be the pomade. I never liked the Deva pomade from the start. It made my hair feel coated and tangled. When you said you were having success with it I pulled it out of the drawer yesterday and used it to set my hair and immediately remembered why I hated it. My hair was a mess

Did you use it on Wet or Dry Jess? I'm not having tangled issues at all but I never do. This is so frustrating....

I used it on dry like my stylist does. I don't think I'd put it in wet hair even though it says to. It just doesn't feel like a product to do that with. I was hoping it would help with my frizz but no. I had so much frizz by the end of the day it was ridiculous.

See it was the exact opposite for me, it gave me such nice definition and shine. The only way to know for sure is not use either of these products for a while. What a PITA this Winter just SUX eggs!

I sprayed some 50/50 Fote Water mix and then a little DM Cocoa Hemp and my hair feels normal again. I even got some definition back. I was trying to figure out if all that No-POO and SLS was making me feel DRY or if I hadn't got rid of the build up. According to Sunshine the washing should have gotten rid of it, I think she's right! It doesn't have that spongy, dry, straw-like feeling anymore like it did while drying. I couldn't get it to feel like it had enough moisture in the shower but adding some Cocoa Hemp to dry hair made a big difference!!!

Polyquat- 11 I've read that some have problems getting this out of their hair, even worse then silicones. I thought I was safe cuz I low poo but I'm still unsure.

I Pm'd another curly about her experience with Mop and SMU and what she thought might have caused the build up. She says she hasn't noticed any issues with Deva SMU but she had this to say about Mop and it sounds exactly like what happened to me.

I did however have to stop using Mop C because of major build up - even with the low poo. I could probably still use it once every couple of weeks or so (I like the results it gives before the build up starts), but I just haven't put it back in my rotation after getting my hair back to normal after over-using it. I'm not sure what the ingredient culprit is in Mop C, but it took a few weeks to recover from the build up. I even did a baking soda / ACV cleanse, it was awful.

I honestly have NO idea now Carmen cuz my CK has Polyquat 10 and I had no issues with it at all. Co-washing was sufficient to wash

Hmm... no one's mentioned the castor oil yet. I know it's water-soluble, but it's a possibility right? Have you had issues with that before? I don't know what else it could be...

How long have you been using the SMU? It has castor oil and I know that if I use that my hair goes gunky feeling.
