Confused...about alot of curly hair things

Ok, so I have been wearing my hair natural for almost a year. When I first cut it, it was very short, so styling was a no brainer. Now that it's longer, I've gotten lost. I'm reading about dewpoints and textures, emollients vs humectants vs. moisture (which I thought were all the same thing), and I am so confused. Right now, my hair feels really dry and crispy. My routine lately has been: co-wash with V05 (nightly or in the morning depending on when I work out), rinse out with Giovanni Smooth as Silk, add Paul Mitchell The Conditioner as leave in which it think has, and style with either my sample of Komaza Coconut Hair Pudding, Fantasia IC gel, or Curls Whipped Cream. I have yet to achieve 2 day hair since I work out in the afternoon. I think I've figured out my texture, medium to coarse with few fine strands here and there. I think I have high porosity even though my hair didn't sink in the water, it soak up most of the DT I let sit overnight. I just purchased some AOHR and Giovanni 50:50 and Reconstructor which hopefully will be here next week. I DT weekly with Lustrasilk Shea Mango, but I'm almost out and think I want to try something else, because my hair feels great when it's on, but not so great when it's rinse out. I'm just looking for a curly mentor to help me with this process.

Sorry this turned into a book, but man am I lost! There are pictures in my fotki if you're interested.

As for your hair type, I'd class you as a 4a-4b. Your hair, like mine, spans a few types. I'm a 3a-3c, depending. I'm going to make some suggestions here based on my own experience. Having the right products makes ALL the difference in the world. The ingredients in them can and will make a HUGE difference in how your hair responds. I have to say that now that I'm CG, my hair is soft, curly, and no frizz (whee!!!!!!!!!!!!)

One, my hair only likes protein right after I color it. It doesn't like regular doses of it AT ALL. The first thing I'd think about jettisoning is the Silk Conditioner.

Two, the Paul Mitchell stuff isn't "curly friendly" and "The Conditioner" which was a fave of my ex-husband ALWAYS made my hair dry and brittle.

Three, I'd get rid of the V05. It's not CG friendly as I recall.

My hair care routine is in my sig and I'm on day 3 hair

Dewpoint has to do with weather and how humid it is outside, which for us curlies is critical to curling. Texture has to do with the kind of curls we have. Hit the home page and see what it says it about "What is your curl type?"

emollients vs humectants vs. moisture

Emollients are thinks like oils - shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil. These things do NOT in and of themselves provide any moisture to the hair. All they do is seal the hair shaft to hold in moisture.

Humecants draw water from the air into the hair. They serve to add moisture to the hair and keep it moist during the day.

Moisture, in its simplest form, is water. H2O. Just think individual molecules instead of your bath tub.

My DT is something that I got from some black friends of mine.... Olive Oil and Honey. Although I think I'm going to add some cocoa butter to it next time. Its not expensive and works like an absolute DREAM on my hair.
TIA,

Morrignu

I thought that V05 was what alot of curlies use to co-wash. It doesn't have any cones in it.

I was thinking about getting rid of the Paul Mitchell, but I have like a liter of it. (Stupid PJ in me bought it because it was 50% off.)

I mixed honey in with the Lustrasilk DT to help boost the conditioning potential.

Your product list looks pretty good except The Conditioner, which besides a lot of glycerin - a no, no for me - has several PEG-modified 'cones plus plain old dimethicone. Maybe you have a non-curly friend that might take it off your hands?

Vo5 conditioner is fine for co-washing. If your hair seems dry, maybe you need a richer rinse-out conditioner than Smooth as Silk - wait, I'm thinking of Super Silky and don't really know about the former . . . . Maybe Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose or GVP Conditioning Balm or something similar. Something like SheaM Leave-In instead of the Paul Mitchell if you find the 50:50 isn't enough. Consider maybe Kinky-Curly Curling Custard since it's very moisturizing, too, followed by gel if you need more hold - IDK how KCCC compares in performance and moisturizing to the Komaza, Fantasia, or Curls Whipped Cream, but I'm sure others will chime in.

Be sure to follow your reconstructor with the AOHR or some other good moisturizer. AOHR, GVPCB or SheaM are rich enough for me to use to DT, but I haven't used Lustrasilk yet and don't know how they compare. If you need something richer, you might consider the real Biolage Ultra Hydrating Conditioning Balm - I've never seen a knock-off for it, just for the regular conditioning balm. Or just look at some of the homemade recipes that other 4s use.

It does all get very confusing. Latch onto someone who seems to have similar hair and stalk them to see what they're doing and using - we all do it, LOL

ETA: Suburbanbushbabe seems very knowledgable if ya'll's hair seems similar . . . .

I'm also going to recommend the GVP conditioning balm from Sally's if you're dry. I love that stuff more than LVPNG, AOHR, and the Giovanni 50:50 (which are all in my shower right now). Maybe you could find another use for the Paul Mitchell...shaving cream perhaps? Use your regular condish as a leave-in too. I wouldn't jump to a protein sensitivity just yet until you've gotten rid of non-CG products.

I loved the Komaza pudding but definitely needed a gel on top for hold and frizz control. I really liked it with some BRHG.

OK, so I gave the PM to my friend upstairs. I have enough leave-in conditioner samples (KCKT and Komaza Califia Care) to make it until I get paid next week. If I like the KCKT, I'll buy a full size bottle. I head to Sally's next week to get the conditioning balm. Would you recommend me DTing more until I get the moisture balance under control? Also, I have a sample of the KCCC, but I need to practice applying it again. The first time didn't go so well. (See fotki.)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I have another question. All over my head are straight strands. They just stick out everywhere. Is this because of damage, clumping issue, or are they just meant to be straight? I've been just cutting them off as my curls air dry and shrink.

OK, so I bought the GVP conditioning balm, I couldn't wait til next week. I must say that I am impressed so far. Of course I've only used it twice, but each time my hair has felt so much better. Thanks for the help! I'm still reading threads and learning, but it's fun!
