Thick Conditioner Needed for Henna Glosses

I'm looking for a thick, inexpensive, oil-free conditioner to use as a base for henna/indigo glosses. Something about the consistency of AOHR but less costly because I'll be using more than a cup at a time. And without the oil because it can keep the slight amount of color I'm trying to deposit from "taking".

I could make thick flax seed gel or other homemade mediums, but I'm lazy and impulsive so I'd like to find something I can just have on hand, ready to go when I have the time and the urge.

Any suggestions?

What about the 100% pure AVG from CVS??? $3.99 for the "family size"...

No, I've already tried that - once I add the henna and indigo and stir or shake it up, it breaks down and gets all watery. I'd have thought it'd be ideal.

Thanks, though!

Bump! Got lost again when it didn't show up in New Posts - let's see if it does this time - I still need some suggestions, please!

What about Tigi Moisture Maniac? It's pretty thick. I pay $20 for it in the grocery store, but the bottle is about 3 times the size of AOHR.
Lots of medium to fine, extremely porous and color damaged hair.
Suave Tropical Coconut for co-wash
Bed Head Tigi Moisture Maniac
FX Curl Booster Fixative Gel

Slowly growing out the color damaged hair. I'm halfway there!!
Nah, I already have some, and it's not as thick as what I'm looking for. Thanks, though.

Hmmm. A challenge! How about:

Any Suave Naturals conditioner
EO Rose and Chamomille (surprisingly thick)
Activate Hydrating (if you can find it)

How about BioInfusions Balm (about 5.00), it is a knockoff of the Matrix one and is pretty thick. You can find it at Walgreens.

We currently use KCKT, Curl Junkie LI & Curls in a Bottle

BioInfusion or GVP conditioning balm are my best bets so far - they're thick enough, but I was hoping someone knew of a particular Suave, VO5 or similarly priced one. However, these type balms may be as cheap as I can get and have it suit my "needs" otherwise.

Suave Coconut and Ocean Breeze are the only Suave ones I've used, and they're not thick enough. Of the two, I prefer OB because it's completely oil-free.

Thanks for all the ideas! Jillipoo, will look into the rose & chamomile and Activate.

Don't know if this is oil-free since I don't have the ingredients in front of me but if you have a Trader Joe's nearby, the thickest cheap conditioner I've used is Trader Joe's Nourish. It's $2.99 for 16oz and has great slip! Much better for me than the Suave and V05 conditioners.
Lustrasilk Shea Mango?? It's cheap and it's thicker then the Olive Oil one.

Thanks all - have a few options now, so maybe one will work.

I second the recommendation for Lustrasilk Shea Mango. It works amazingly well -- and I like it all the better because the huge 20 oz. tub costs less than $3!
Dry climate
2C/3A, fine texture, high porosity, medium-low density

For me, desert climate+porous hair+CG=inconsistent results!
For what I'm using it for, it's the thickness and price I'm more concerned with than with the conditioning, but I am planning on giving the Lustrasilk a try. Also, I was reminded that we DO now have Trader Joe's here, so I'm also going to pick up some TJ Nourish. Surely one of these ya'll have suggested will do the trick - Thanks!

Well, then the Mango Lustrasilk may be for you...it's thick and I don't think it's too moisturizing...at least not for me.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

I am a sulfate washing, cone slabbing, curly lovin' s.o.b. The CG police haven't caught me yet.

Just an update in case anyone else is still looking for such a conditioner - the two best I've found are the Biolage conditioning balm knock-offs and, surprisingly, at least to me, L'Oreal Pro Vive Nutri Gloss for long to medium hair that's curly or wavy.

I like the Aldi "Shique" version of the Biolage because it's only $2.98 for a 16 oz. bottle - GVP and BioInfusion versions are a little more expensive. I like the way it makes my hair feel better than the LVNPG, and I like that it has no oil but, although it's quite thick, it does have enough liquid seep out that I have to keep paper towels handy for blotting.

I tried the LPVNG Sunday because I had bought three bottles when they were 3/$9 but didn't end up particularly caring for it as a regular conditioner. I noticed the other day that it was fairly thick so thought it might work for glosses, putting it to good use after all. Sure enough, it worked like a charm although it does have a little oil in it - the oil didn't seem to affect the indigo's performance. It actually had almost no water seep out of it, so it's the best by far in that repect. It's a little pricey for this purpose unless you find it on a good sale as I did because of the quantity you use at a time - about 2/3 of the 15 oz. bottle for me.

I used the LVNPG again yesterday for a henna/indigo gloss, and I actually quite like it for this purpose. It doesn't seem that much thicker than other conditioners, but I have no water seep out of it like I have with everything else I've tried. I can just put a plastic cap over it and I'm done - not cotton roping needed to absorb drips, not blotting necessary. It's the least messy medium I've found.

I've used half a bottle each time, and since I had bought 3/$9, that's not bad at all.

I don't particularly care for the fragrance or how my hair performs afterward with it, so I just wash it out afterwards and condition with something I do like.
