When you get your hair colored....

I am going to have my hair color touched up for the first time since going CG. Should I bring my own low-poo and conditioner, or is it better to just use the sulfate shampoo (to get all the dye out) at the salon? Should I just use the shampoo but use my own cone and protein free conditioner? What do you usually do?

And I cannot be talked out of coloring my hair

The women in my family are all prematurely gray and at 29 I have more grays than most middle aged women.

Experimenting with products right now.

My routine:
Low poo for scalp
Condition using icequeen method
rake in gel at scalp
scrunch with microfiber towel
scrunch in more gel side to side
pixiecurl diffuse side to side
SOTC

My hair hates:
Upside down diffusing
Upside down Plopping
Protein
Hmm... well, with the at home dyes you generally aren't supposed to (according to the instructions) shampoo ANYways, right after. Maybe let them shampoo if necessary, but ask that they use your conditioner (to avoid having to shampoo AGAIN later on the next time you wash to get rid of cones...)

If they give you weird looks, just tell them you've had bad allergies with other kinds, and this one's the best you've found

At the salon I always have to shampoo right after, then condition. My stylist actually tells me to shampoo TWICE which just makes me cringe.

See, that just seems odd to me. Maybe one of the pro stylists around here can chime in. I've never been trained, so I don't really know what i'm talking about :P

When I used to get my hair colored, I asked my stylist to do a cowash instead of a shampoo. She was great about respecting my adventures in CG. I'd bring in different styling products for her to try on me, too. But when I got highlights, she said that a sulfate shampoo was necessary. I just conditioned like crazy for a week or so afterward to make up for the drying effects of the color and shampoo. I've been letting the gray grow in and my hair has been curling better than ever.

I go to a deva trained hair stylist for color and she low poos my hair after color. This works fine, and doesn't cause any damage.
Thanks everyone. I was thinking the sulfate shampoo was necessary, just for that day. So I guess I'll just bring conditioner and use a LOT.

My stylist uses a shampoo and conditioner with cones after I get color and low/highlights. It doesn't bother me because I'm not strict CG and my hair must be pretty forgiving because it seems to bounce back as soon as I go back to my co-washes and low poos. Plus, I'm sure doing DTs doesn't hurt, either.

I did ask my stylist if I could bring in my own products and she said of course. She said she doesn't mind if her curly clients want to use their own stuff because she knows they know what works for their own hair better than she does. I brought in my own styling products once but then I quit because as well as she can cut my hair, she CANNOT style it worth a hoot, so I don't bother bringing anything anymore and just leave with my hair wet most times.
