Can birth control thin out your hair?

I've been on BC for over a year, and before i remember my hair being very thick but now its quite thin and if it clumps too much you can see those kinda "bald spots" that someone posted on awhile ago. Any ideas?

O and I know it's not age related cuz I'm only turning 20 this year, so I'm pretty sure it's not that!

Birth control artificially regulates your hormone levels. It analogous to how a pregnant woman can have radical changes in her hair type and thickness. Hormones are very powerful and affect your body in tremendous ways. So yup, it's perfectly possible that if you had no other lifestyle changes, the BC could be to blame.

Thanks Laura Lee! You are my hair guru! Haha even though our hair is crazily different!

The change in hair wasn't very drastic, I'm sure it happened over time, plus i've gone through a few terrible haircuts over the past year and a bit...My SO noticed it when i used the skip curl method a little while back, and i noticed it the other day after my curls really clumped nicely.

Do you or anyone else know if going off BC would change my hair back to the way it was?

I get pretty significant bald spots when I get good clumping. There was a thread about this a little while back...don't remember who started it or what it was called...boo my bad memory

Anyhoo, I find I can hide them if I bend over so my hair is upside down, slide my fingers into my hair on my scalp, and use the pads of my fingers to loose up the roots and such. It normally fluffs things up underneath enough to hide them. Maybe it's not a problem of thinning so much as awesome clumping?? Of course if you think it's the BC, you could try taking a vitamin regimin to counteract it. I've been taking Biotin ever since I found out I'd need to take birth control (with fine thin hair to start, I was scared I'd lose half my hair!) and I've noticed a difference. I take it in 5mg doses now (started a 1mg [1000mcg] and worked my way up).

Haha I'm happy to be a hair guru. That makes me feel like I need an awesome guru hat or robe or both to play the part

I remember the post you're talking about, although i can't remember the title or poster either lol....I've been taken a variety of vitamins including Biotin, although i've cut down a bit cuz i'm going through a mystery health issue where no doctor knows whats wrong with me (frustrating)...so I'm just taking my BC and multivitamin (which also has Biotin in it)

Thanks for the ideas how to mask the "bald spots" lol

The only thing that worries me is causing frizz, since i'm going through a frizzy issue idk if lossening up the roots would caused more frizz since the friss is relatively localized there

I'll try it today (well if i get good clumping lol), I understand what you're talking about lol, Do you do this on wet hair or once it has dried, cuz my hair literally takes HOURS and hours to dry, and i have to wet it every morning cuz it's too short to preserve the curl lol

Ask your doctor to put you on a formula that is higher in estrogen, that should keep any hair fall in check. Each formula has a different ration of hormones, and some birth control pills actually make your hair thicker (i.e. like what happens during pregnancy), and usually this is due to high estrogen levels that naturally occur during pregnancy. You don't have to be on a "high dose" pill, just one that has a higher ratio of estrogen to the other hormones. Good luck!
Yes, it can thin your hair. It was one of the main reasons I went off BC. My hair used to be so thick I couldn't wrap a ponytail holder twice around it. I could only slide it on. Now I can wrap the ponytail holder 2-3 times. It sucks. It really sucks.
