Default Piling on products--is it good for your hair?

From reading the posts on this board, it seems to me that people are accustomed to using multiple products on their hair--either by mixing 'em together or using them separately but essentially at the same time. I am wondering--does this &*#@ your hair? I guess I'm afraid of getting buildup by using a ton of product, but it also just seems very time-intensive to me in general. Doesn't it make your hair feel gloopy and heavy if you put too much stuff in it? Or is there a method that helps prevent weighed-down or crunchy hair?

I agree. I think using a lot of products can be just as bad or worse than using some silicone...some, granted...not a lot of silicone. LOL
I make sure I don't over do it myself. I use a leave-in, maybe a curl cream (a big maybe...only because I'm trying to get rid of it), and if it's windy I use hairspray. That's it. I know people have their routines and they know what works best for them...to each his or her own...but I am with you on this one.

Boomygrrl, I essentially do the same thing as you (although I do need a curl cream to battle the frizz and define curls). I'm coming to the end of my life as a non-CG girl and I guess I'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of products many of the posters use. Tee hee--mainly because I'm super low maintenance and have always adhered to the idea that less is more. I used to use ablout five different products in my hair several years ago, and while I always had nice curls, they were a lot more crunchy and limp than they are today!

I try to keep it simple. I used to put all kinds of stuff in my hair back in the day and when i think back on it im like what the hell?!?

Now i have a couple shampoos i try to stick to for the days i feel i need a shampoo, I have a couple co-washes, and one main condish and leave in i use. Oh and one gel. My main thing now is to keep the PJ in control. I am happy with my products and I have to tell myself that when the urge to buy something new that comes along and looks like this shouting OOO BUY ME! I AM AWESOME! on the shelves in the evil product isle.

I don't think it's bad for hair particularly, but I just don't get how hair wouldn't look producty with numerous products in! I've tried a few (ok lots!) different things over the years but I hate how my hair looks and feels if there's more than a couple of things in it. I remember one time thinking my hair looked pretty good (good definition, minimal frizz) then catching sight of myself in a mirror in Target and it looked dreadful, so coated and dull. I've cut back on things since then and 9 times out of 10 will now just use a leave-in, mousse and a bit of something to finish off post diffusing. It's enough for me.

I would think if you kept everything balance you should be fine! Like not using everything that is protein because then you would get too much and it will be bad. I normally do a conditioner wash then I do a moisturizing leave in condition and for protein I use my Megatek very lightly on my scalp and seal my ends with coconut oil and sometimes on my tresses.

I do this about 3x a week and my hair is so soft that I can't stop touching it

All I use is conditioner and gel, with the occassional shampoo. Anything more than that just makes my hair frizzy and dry.

I've had the same thought. Some folks do pile on the product -- and weirdly, it seems to work for them. And yet, I have to wonder if they ever really know whether it is the individual products or the combinations that they like. Seems very complicated to me.

Some hair seems to be able to handle it. Mine doesn't like too many things in it. The most adventurous I get is curl creme followed by aloe vera gel mixed in with regular gel.

But some people do this with makeup, too. I know women who use three different lipsticks at a time or combine several shades of eyeshadow for some mysterious effect that I think only they appreciate! Maybe it's a personality type. Multiple Product Combo Users

Now, with makeup, I'm definitely a product mixer. My hair is just more tempermental, I guess!

I'm trying out CG for the second time and I have definitely found that less is more for my hair. It's pretty fine and I can VERY easily weigh my curls down with too much conditioner or product. Even using small amounts of multiple things tends to be too much for me.

So far I've not experienced any buildup (at least, not this go-round -- the first time I went CG was a few years ago and I didn't really understand not to use silicones so I got lots of build up) but I'm super-careful about the amounts of new things I'll use. If I'm adding in any new product I'll cut back on the amounts of everything else.

I'm also kind of lazy - I was only using a leave-in conditioner most days pre-CG and got halfway decent curls, so I don't want to have to use three products to get that same effect on the CG routine.

wow as i read the threads that is EXACTLY what came to mind! Me being low maintenance as well am finding a hard time putting so much stuff in my hair. and since i am low maintenance, i dont really wear make up, so i search on youtube for tutorials and you have girls putting on 4 different eyeshadows, and at the end, it looks purple and black!? In my head im like, is this really necessary!?

I tend to use a couple products cause thats what i read about! I'm new to CG and i can not think for myself when it comes to products! LOL. But i guess the consensus is leave in, curl enhancer/ frizz fighter, and gel (or mousse) when needed.

But i am a product junky by nature... I buy all the eye shadows used on youtube, whether i use it or not, and i buy everything recommended on NC

Another thing to keep in mind - when you read our signatures and see all those products, many of them aren't ones we're using all at the same time. More often, those are ones we're switching around. For example, in mine, I'm not using ArcAngell with KCCC and the FSG. I'm using KCCC each day, but with one gel or the other, not both. I don't use all those conditioners together - I generally rotate them around weekly so I'm not getting build-up and my hair's not getting overly-used to them.

In reality, let's say on a given day for example, I'll use the Desert Essence to co-wash, AOWC for condish and a little leave in, and then KCCC mixed with a little FSG for a styler. It's actually not a ton of stuff in my hair, and it's way less than when I was still fighting my curls back in the day!

Yeah, I can't pile on anything or I end up with a stringy, dirty looking, sometimes poofy- mess. My best results were a bit of suave coconut as a leave-in with either Set me up or Tizz no frizz, nothing else.

Again, no two heads are alike so what APPEARS to be piling on products for one head isn't for another. Texture, porosity and hair type all play a role in this. A fine haired curly couldn't possibly take the amt of product that a thick, porous haired curly needs to get it to behave. Did these 5 diff. products include your Low Poo and Condish???? 5 Diff styling products seems like a lot for any head. I use 2-3 stylers depending on the Weather and I also style for 2-3 DAYS so of course I need to use enough to give it hold.

Default piling on the products - is it good for the hair?

Only in the last month did I get into using more than one styling product in my hair - LOL! For years, I've just gone with LA Looks Curl Look Gel. But this month I picked up some Beyond the Zone Noodlehead curl cream, as I've never tried a curl cream before, and it does do well applied first, and then my gel. I couldn't IMAGINE applying 5 different styling products to my hair - the time, money and trouble would send me around the bend - LOL, not to mention the mess I'd have in my hair. I'm pretty minimalist - since I'm not CG, I just have two shampoos(one regular, one clarifying)and three conditioners(one for regular use, and the other two are DTs - one being a protein reconstructor, and the other one a deep moisture treatment, since I color my hair with permanent color). I don't rotate shampoos - not one to have 8 - 10 different kinds of shampoos and conditioners, or styling products either. My husband would have a fit if I did that. All he does is shampoo and apply a bit of my gel, period(but he doesn't color, nor is his hair curly).
