Is it bad that I want to relax my curls?

I don't want straight hair. I love curly hair. When I was 16 I had long hair, to my waist, I knew if I cut it short it would curl up. So I did. I've had curly hair ever since. I love my curly hair. There'sve been days I've hated my hair, but not because it was curly. I never thought of it that way. I never wished for straight hair.

But, since having my two kids (they are 3 and 2) my hair curled up a lot. It's got a pretty tight curl to it now. Like 3b. I used to be more like a 3a. Is there anything that will stretch them out just a little? Am I the only one who wants a different type of curl? I just wish it was a little more relaxed, but only just a little. This is just too tight! Any ways to stretch it out some when styling? My hair is short, just above my shoulders and waay too layered. Most days I look like I have a 'fro and that is not the look I'm going for.
Maybe try just a straightening balm to relax it a little?

I honestly wouldn't relax it relax it. I relaxed my hair a couple of times back in the days before I learned to stop fighting my curls, and it's truly the pits.

Relaxing it was the worst, because you don't even have the option of going with your hair curly if you don't have time to really fix it. What relaxing does is it - it relaxes some of your curl, but not all of it. But not in a nice way, you know? So, you have to blow it out, and/or flat iron it every day anyway - you have no choice, unless you just want to wear it in a ponytail all day. Otherwise, it just looks like a bad perm growing out - this is exactly what mine looked like. A rainy day? It's going to look even worse. I made more work for myself, flushed a lot of money down the drain, and created more damage to my hair by chemically relaxing it. And 8 times out of 10, I wound up wearing it in a ponytail because I didn't have time to do all that to it.

Plus, you have two small kids - I guarantee you're not going to have time to blow out and flat iron your hair with little ones running around.

The upshot is that you have the perfect low-maintainence hair. I do too, it just took me years to embrace it. If you truly want to loosen the curl a little, I'd try just a bit of straightening balm first, let it air dry (diffusing creates more volume in my hair, I find), and see how that works for you.

thanks! I definitely don't want to do something chemical like a relaxer! Not the look I'm going for. I really just want to stretch out my curls just a bit.

It's perfect when it's wet! Just the right amount of curl but when it starts to dry, it just shrinks into these little tight curls. Would a straightening balm really help to stretch it out a little?
It might. I'm not sure what kind to recommend, other than to make sure it's 'cone free. I don't really know straightening balms, but it's certainly worth a try if you can find one that's inexpensive and CG friendly.

I like my curls a little looser than they want to be, and so I don't scrunch them too much while applying product or diffusing.

Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control (QCCC) seems to be the styler that gives me the loosest curls. Another thing I do, if I have time, is to put it all up in a pineapple for a half hour or so after it's dry and I've scrunched out the crunch. That makes it loosen up a bit. This works especially if you're running around with the kids - just stick it up in a pineapple until it's time to be in public

Good luck!
3b with a little 3a
Mostly CG, but I love me some amodimethicone.

Cleanse: V05 Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner; CJ Hibiscus Bliss low poo; LLL Green Tea Cleanse
Rinse-Out: Kenra moisturizing conditioner, Redken All Soft (old formula), LVPNG, LVPHG
Leave-In
: Agave nectar plus Sebastian Potion 9 or Aloeba
Style: Dab of QCCC, Re:Coil or Mop-C under BRHG/HESMU combo

KCCC also stretches out the curl some. You could also try putting clips at the bottom of your curls so as they dry they don't spring up. You said you like the way it looks when wet right? That should keep that same curl pattern.

3b/c mix; mixture of fine, med. and coarse texture with med-high porosity

Current HG routine: Tresemme Naturals conditioner; AG Fast Food LI; AG Recoil; CJ CIAB = no crunch, lots of body and awesome definition

It's not a bad thing-we all have our preferences! Also, hair can change texture as well as color as we age. Sometimes I want loose spirals or wavy curls, and other times I want ringlets...my hair is different almost every day anyway. There are products out there that can add weight to curls and stretch them out, but you have to experiment to see which ones work for you.
2c/3a/3b curls, waist length

Leave-ins/Stylers:KCKT/KCCC/KCGP

My hair got looser after my kids; Used to be a 3b/c now I am a 3a. But I liked looser curls, so I used to diffuse, and then while my hair was still warm from the dryer I would put it up in a loose bun on top of my head til it cooled. When I took it out the curls were softer and looser.
