Water softener causing issues?

I did a search for this and didn't find anything. If I missed it somehow forgive me for starting a new thread about it.

I live in CO and we have extremely hard water here. When we had it tested by the city right after we moved in to this house the chlorine levels were 2 1/2 times higher than normal swimming pool levels. So we put in a water softener on our main water line. It's a huge system and works great, but it uses a lot of salt to soften the water.

I started CG almost a week ago and it was going great until yesterday. My hair still feels fine and isn't greasy (I never washed with shampoo more than once or twice a week anyway) and doesn't feel like there's any build-up, but I've started having issues with my scalp. It started itching yesterday and it's making me a little crazy.

I did a clarifying shampoo and a DT when I started CG and all the products I've been using since are CG. I'm not allergic to anything. I know what allergic reactions are like and this isn't a constant enough or strong enough itch for that. It's more like the itch I would get if I went too many days without washing after blowing/ironing my hair straight.

Could my water softener somehow be causing issues with going no-poo?

What a relief!!! You did a search before posting a NEW thread!!!!

Your right there hasn't been a lot of talk about Salt and Water softeners. I read somewhere on-line forgive me I can not remember WHERE but it was suggested that if you have a water softener you do need to clarify once in a while. I have one and I'm convinced this is why I can't go FULL CG. I use Low Poo regularly and I use the Sally's Generic for Nexus Aloe Rid every couple wks. You may have to do something similar....Sorry it's not your imagination the salt will build up for some reason...

Thanks! I know the salt used is "supposed to" not make it into the regular water supply, but I never believed it. I don't think it's possible for some of it to not get in there even if we can't taste it or anything. I'm waiting for the South of France soap bars to get here and will try those as low-poo and see if it helps. If not, I'll clarify again. I haven't tried baking soda or ACV yet, but since baking soda is considered a salt I don't know how well it would work to remove another salt. Hmm...

I'm allergic to a lot of the products that have been THE product for a while, CK, Shea M LI, Biotera CC and Gel to name a few. It starts out as an itch or uncomfortable feeling and builds up to a burning sensation.

If you weren't allergic to the water softener before, I can't imagine a week of CG would cause the itch. Especially since you weren't using shampoo all that much previously.

That being said, I cowashed for six months and switched over to natural soap bars. They are very gentle and less stripping then lowpoo. I've had to do an occasional low poo to remove ingredients my hair doesn't like--castor oil and Dairy Whip. Other then that, the bars are enough for me.

It probably depends on on your hair texture and porosity. My hair is fine and low to medium porosity. It doesn't require the lowpoo. Del is coarser and more porous--so requires more lowpoo and the Dr. Bronner's Shikakai rinse when she uses a soap bar.

It's refreshing to see you're right it should be "automatic" to search first....

Before you try ACV or Baking soda read this http://www.livecurlylivefree.com/home%20remedies.htm

it explains why you should do the BS without an ACV

you've got me thinking on the Soap bars and Water Softener too. I got terrible build up when I tried using just soap bars even though I would follow with an ACV rinse. Some can get away without an ACV when using the bars but it could be a texture/porosity thing too. You'll have to play around a little with them but Struttswife doesn't recommend using them more than once a month regardless. There are plenty of curlies that use them more often without any issues, I wasn't one of them unfortunately it could be a combination of a lot of things like the oils, texture/porosity and on top of that the Water Softener!!

Sorry your searching didn't bring back any hits but so glad you tried.

My hair loves soft water but I only get to use it when I visit my friend in another town. My water is quite hard.

I can't see the water causing your itching either. Are you thoroughly scrubbing your scalp when you co-wash? As previously stated, you shouldn't see much of an adjustment period where you shampooed so infrequently to start with.

Did you start using new products when you went CG? If so, could also be something in one of them to which you're sensitive.

The build up with the Salt in the Water Softener is real my friends. TRUST me I know from personal experience I've had this system for many years and when I tried to go full CG my scalp itched so bad. It was build up from products because the Condish simply does NOT do the job of washing it all away!!! No amt of scrubbing, ACV, Baking soda or Lemon would get rid of it. It wasn't until I started using Low Poo that I FINALLY got relief. Some heads will CLING to stuff more than others and that is a texture thing for sure.

I'm not sure of its porosity yet, but I think it's fairly high. It colors easily even though it's almost 90% gray and becomes dry very easily. I'm sure that some spots are far more porous than others because I've been getting highlights for about 3 years now.

I never really gave any thought as to whether the water softener itself could have been causing the itch I would feel a couple of days after washing my hair but it's definitely possible. I grew up in NYC and always had soft water before. I never had this problem there. It's also far drier here than there and I tend to have scalp issues from that too. I used to wash my hair every day or every other day but cut it back to once a week or so because of the dryness here. I've been co-washing every 3rd day but maybe I should try doing it more often.

I'm definitely going to give the bars a shot as soon as they get here. I'm trying to figure out all of the CG routine stuff and am trying not to try too many products at once because I'm finding it's really easy to become overwhelmed by them all.

A question? Do you use a regular conditioner as a leave-in? I can't leave conditioner in my hair for anyone extended amount of time. Even after I rinse, I have an itchy scalp. I try to never use my reg condish as a dt either, even that leaves me an itchy mess. It's amazing I can leave it in while I shower!

Of course I don't gave soft water, so I font have any idea if it's that. HTH!!!!

I was wondering about that. I think when I shower in a bit (as soon as my son is down for his nap) I will try rinsing out all of my conditioner and see how it feels.
