Can you need proteins on part of your hair

Ok, so my hair can't take proteins it makes it crunchy and dry looking. But I was wondering if it is possible if you could benefit from protein on part of your hair but not the rest? I was reading about hair texture and saw that fine hair is fragile and could benefit from protein. My very top layer, around canopy area, is fine I think...it's definitely a different texture than the rest. So I was wondering if it is possible for me to need protein treatments sometimes, but only there?

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.
That is absolutely plausible. Your hair isn't going to be the same everywhere on your head. Lots of people have dry parts, wavy parts, coarse parts, etc. So if you think that part would benefit from some protein, do it. Can't do any real harm or damage, dryness can be fixed.

I think I may have to try. The top shortest layer of my hair that is rather flyaway and has always been a problem seems to be rather porous and I just realized that that must be why when I put in conditioner for hold I end up with a few stringlets in the top layer because that part absorbs way too much product. Anyway...I wonder if I should do some sort of a protein treatment on that part. The underneath part is pretty normal I think it always looks smooth and healthy, but the top layer is killing me! Is there a cure for porous hair?

If you do a protein treatment and then follow with a DT you could probably use it on your whole head without any drying effects. Works for me and I'm protein sensitive.

Well, Struttswife (Tiffany) is an actual expert on matters like porosity, so PM her with questions. But as far as I know, there is no cure, and really, it's not something that's wrong with your hair. It's just one of its features. Like your curl pattern. It can be limiting, but you wouldn't say that your curl pattern was messed up!

1 can of Coconut Milk
1 Banana (preferably chopped into small pieces)
1 Avocado (preferably chopped into small pieces)
1-2 TBSP of Honey
1 TBSP of Olive Oil
How to make it: Pour entire can of coconut milk into blender, follow with chopped avocado pieces. Puree well. Add chopped banana into the mixture, along with the Honey and Olive Oil. Puree well.
**This makes about 3 glasses full, depends on the size of the banana/avocado. You could freeze what you don't use.

I may have to rethink the protein treatment. I was trying to feel and see what the deal really was with that portion of my hair cause I remember using stuff with protein all over and it making my whole head yucky!lol So, so far it seems that in this section there are some fine hairs with a looser pattern (the ones that get stringy with product)and there are also course zig-zags. The rest of my hair, the underneath part seems to be normal and medium which is why it seems to hold up well. I wouldn't wanna do the protein and then have crappy hair for my Saturday night out.lol

K...I'm thinkin most of it is definitely not fine. The annoying part in the canopy is course...the underneath part is medium and there are a few fine parts thrown in for good measure. I got these silky sections above my temple that never hold curl, my hairdresser has even commented, well these parts are fine. I looked at a piece from the problem area today in the shower...man, is it course and zig-zag. Most of the rest when I pull out a single strand it is a very lazy S pattern that seems to be pretty pliable and easily coaxed into a curl. I'm guessing course hair can't be porous. But I did run my finger up the strand when it was dry and it did catch quite a bit until it felt like I might ruff it up, so I'm not sure what that means. So we got the texture down....just need to figure porosity.

For the last three days I've tried removing the protein from my routine and adding humectants to combat the coarse problem but I haven't really seen any results from that. So now I'm trying adding protein to my routine (obviously I have no idea what I am doing). I tried the protein treatment you were talking about. I put it mainly in the problem area of my hair but honestly I had no results, good or bad. My hair didn't even feel stiff and dry like everyone says protein makes your hair feel. But I am continuing with the plan to add protein. So I'm using LVPNG today. So far (my hair is not dry yet so this may not remain true) my hair is looking the best it has looked in weeks. I did the IceQueen method and the crazy coarse hairs look moisturized and they are curling well. So maybe moisture and protein are my problem. I have no idea at this point.

ok, well certainly let us know how everything looks when it's dry. Maybe we have the exact same problem! What's the Ice-Queen method?

maybe that part is just course and really really dry. I was reading on another thread about someone using honey and olive oil and being greasy and having to shampoo lots to get out. Well I've done that before and all I did at the end was a little clarifying conditioner or maybe a good scrub with my Co-wash and I was good. Also I notice when I wet my hair while that part gets wet, it; still feels dry and rough until conditioner is in there...do you have that problem too. Maybe it's damaged and can't hold on to the moisture. Last night I misted that part a little while dry before the shower and soaked it in conditioner and put it in a bun while I showered...then I did my hair as normal, it does feel a little less dry today so maybe I need to do more of that till it gets normal.

Anyway, my hair is dry now and it looks much better than it has in weeks. Maybe the extra cond. with protein in it did the trick (at least for today).
Here is the link for the Icequeen Method if you want to try it.

I think your right...there is even a part under my canopy where most of it is silky like the rest but towards the ends it gets a little more like my problem area. Boy if it's just porosity cause by damaged I'll feel so much better...I mean I'm planning to grow mine for a long time so if it's just damage it'll grow out. Now tonight I separated it again and I misted my dry hair and loaded it with conditioner and a few drops of oil...and put it in a bun while I did the rest. When I rinsed that part didn't feel so icky so, we'll see if I can help it with moisture until it grows out. I may try protein in certain parts the fine part that I have at the hair line might benefit from.

So if all this is true then would that mean we have course porous hair? If Struttswife is around I'd like to hear the best ways to treat that type.

I am so glad I learned some about hair texture. I had been having issues with the front top part at my hairline, I thought it was damaged and breaking. I have little fuzzy baby hairs up there. And that part of my hair always felt thinner...well it's fine...I mean downy, silky fine so it's more fragile and breaks more. I have been avoiding protein because of what it does to the rest of my hair...but I think that part needs it. So sometime soon I will be doing the mayo, egg, olive oil thing on that part of my hair. That part also shows grease more so I am worried about getting it out. Maybe that will thicken it up. Boy I'm learning so much here!!!lol

Well, I did a treatment last night for a little while. I mixed and egg, some olive oil, some honey and some V05 with silk protein. Left it on for like 40 minutes. It may be a little more substantial today so I may do a stronger one next time, maybe two eggs. I also did my misting thing of my problem area and had some conditioner and oil sit in that part for a while. I didn't seem to have as many tangles and my problem area does seem to be getting a little less dry and frizzy. I think I'll keep it up! Maybe you should try it CurlyRae.

Sure! And I read something, somewhere about misting conditioner on basically dry hair. Something about it being able to soak up more moisture from the conditioner being dry...if it's soaking with water it's already full. Also something about misting lightly with water first because of the little bit of water drawing more moisture in or something...maybe it was Struttswife that wrote it somewhere but it seems to be working for me so far.
