Question Which gel should I get?

Ok, I know several people on here really like HESMU and HETT. But what I want to know is: Which one of these gels works the best, and why? If you don’t like one/either of them, what (budget friendly and CG compatible) gel would you recommend?

Here are some of the things I’m looking for in a gel:
- CG friendly
- Won’t leave my hair crunchy (one I can scrunch the crunch out of)
- Won’t make my hair look stiff, wet, or greasy (I like my hair to look soft and natural)
- Eliminates frizz but...
- Doesn’t slick down my hair; lets me keep some volume.
- All day hold
- Gives good 2nd day hair (not absolutely necessary, but would be nice)

I seem to have found my HG with my FSG-FOTE cocktail, but unfortunately I can’t take them on vacation (multi-week road-trip with no fridge ), so I’m looking for an inexpensive alternative (I want to have a little time to experiment with the new gel/s before I leave)—plus I have a coupon for $2 off any two HE products.

My hair: 3a/b, thick, porous, slightly layered, just below shoulder length. I'm 'cone and 'phate free too!

And just in case it helps—the ingredient list for both gels

Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel, Max Hold

Water, Laureth 23, Polyquaternium 4, Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf/Stem Extract, Cereus Grandiflorus Flower Extract (Cactus), Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Benzyl Alcohol, Acrylates/Beheneth 25 Methacrylate Copolymer, Aminomethyl Propanol, DMDM Hydantoin, Acrylates Copolymer, Disodium EDTA

Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Scrunching Gel

Water, PVP, Laureth 23, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract (Lavender), Jade Plant Extract (Crassula Argentea), Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, Triisopropanolamine, Carbomer, Methylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Propylparaben, Disodium EDTA

I didn't like either one so I can't help there but I have used the LA Looks sports gel (blue one) with pretty good results. It has really good hold.

I've used all 3 of the HE gels, some of the mousse's and some of the spray gels.

HESMU is my favourite of any of them - hands down. It gives superior hold and scrunches out soft every time.

I rotate three cheap CG gels that you might want to try:
Aura Hypoallergenic ($5 at Sally's)
Biotera ($6, I think, at Sally's)
HE Body Envy ($3 or 4 at a drugstore)

HEBE is kind of tough to find; I've only found it at one Target in the city of Chicago, but I love it. It smells better than HE SMU and has good hold, but it's more flexible than HE SMU.

I like HEBE too and for an even softer hold, sometimes I'll mix HEBE with a few drops of the Aura Hypoallergenic gel. I've never had any problem finding HEBE at Walmart.

Good luck finding a new gel and have fun on your road-trip!

HESMU has stronger hold than TT, imo.

I love it, it has good hold, and scrunches out easily. Gives me soft 2nd and 3rd day hair too, smells awesome, and is cheap!!

HEBE gave me good clumpage, but not so great curl shape, whereas HETT gave me a nice ringlety shape, but my hair was pretty much in stringlets. HESMU has seemed to combine the pros of the other two gels together, with no negatives... it scrunches out easily, gives me a nice curl shape and relatively ok clumps. It's worth the 4ish dollars

I second the suggestion for the LA sports, gives me soft and natural looking curls, it's my HG frizz fighter.

I like the Biolage Gelee it has good hold and if by chance you put too much in and it gets crunchy you can scrunch it out easily And I believe its CG but I would check that out with the other members I don't want to recommend the wrong product to you

I second either LA Looks Sports Gel or BRHG.

I hate HETT - gave me tacky-feeling stringlets, regardless of the amount. Haven't used HESMU, but I know some say it comes close to BRHG. LALSG is the closest I've found - I like it just as well, sometimes better.

Bioterra's good, too, but lighter hold.

I doubt it - most Pantene products aren't CG. However, some of your other products don't appear to be either, so you may not mind.

I like that gel but it is not very hard holding - at least in my opinion. And it is CG. Pantene has come a long way recently. But I like it but I would pick HESMU over this gel. Here are the ingredients:

Water , PVP , Laureth-23 , VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer , Panthenol , Panthenyl Ethyl Ether , Triisopropanolamine Carbomer , DMDM Hydantoin , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Methylparaben , Propylparaben , Disodium EDTA , Fragrance

I have tried HE TT and HEBE. HEBE is my HG Gel (so far, lol). I didn't care for HE TT. The HEBE for me gives really good clumps no matter what i put underneath it and has a nice hold, easy to SOTC as well.

Now I haven't tried HESMU but a lot of curlies on here love it. That will be my next experiment.

another inexpensive option is the GF spray gel for curls (cant think of the name right now). i twist the spray top off and just apply with my hands. i find i have less crunch even when using much more than HE gels, and im pretty happy with the hold, which is lighter than the HE gels (ive been out and about in the gross boston rain all day, and i have minimal frizz).

I like the Tresseme Bouncy Curls Gel. It defines your curls while leaving them moisturized and its alcohol free. Plus it doesn't leave your hair crunchy!
$5

All my products have either cones that can be co-washed out or cones that are water-soluble (amodimethicone is water-soluble if there is trideceth-12 and cetrimonium chloride) but thanx for your opinion

Okay thanks to everyone who helped about my question (pantene gel). I didn't get it but instead I got garnier fructis endurance 24H gel. It is not sticky at all and has maximum hold! I'm trying it tonight but it's not sticky on my hands! Sorry to be off-topic, I know this thread is about herbal essences gels.

I like HESMU because it smells really good, its not expensive, in my opinion it fights frizz well, and the crunch scrunches out easily.

alanah there's some discussion about A-cone here http://livecurlylivefree.proboards.c...play&thread=42 that sheds new light on trideceth-12. It seems that the T-12 makes the A-cone dispersible in water but forms a film on the hair requiring a surfectant to remove it.
