Deva or Curly Expert Stylists and Short Hair
There are a couple of threads about going short and having curly hair. I always had short hair and I actually miss it. I feel with my longer hair it looks thinner/finer due to it's length. But I rarely see a curly stylist showing photos or talking about short hair styles. Thoughts??? Do most people think that curly hair should be longer??
Del - do you think the infamous John can do short??

Well, after looking at your pic on the other thread, I know you can definitely pull off short hair!! Since your curl isn't super tight, I think it would be just fine.

Since mine has relaxed to 3A, if I go very short, I lose most of my curl - very strange because I used to have a poodle head when short.
Anyway, if you've had yours short and know that doesn't happen, I say go for it - unless you're like me and miss the versatility of longer hair.
Good luck, whatever you decide!

auntnett I think my thinness and fineness 'help' me escape the poodlehead look. For a 3a I still maintain quite a bit of curl but it's loose.
On the other hand - I am wondering if I am looking at photos where I am 6 years younger and assuming I will look like that when I cut my hair. Kinda like rose colored glasses ya know? Maybe I should put this post in the over 40 thread!!

xcptnl Darling......
I truly believe that John is a Genius and there is nothing he can't do!!!! Post your pic over here so we can see your shorter cut. I really think that length is very flattering on you!! I think John will take that cut to another level and you will be sooooooo very very happy! DO IT! You have the facial features for shorter hair and it will look FAB-tastic!

Per Del's request here is the short do from 6 years ago!! The only reason I hesitate with John (Del and I both get our haircut from him) is that when I mentioned shorter the last time he seemed hesitant.

Well you've been growing it out so maybe he didn't want to do something that you weren't 100% sure you wanted.. What did he say? Look at you! *whistles*

Thanks for the compliment Del but there are a few more wrinkles and sags since that was taken!! I think I may take some photos with me - make an appointment in June. If I don't like it - I grow it back out. I went pretty short last fall and it's back to my shoulders again.

You do short hair very well! And you don't look a day older than that picture! I'm jellis!
Funny thing that we were whining when our hair got cut too short and we wanted it to grow. Now we want it shorter. Yes, I have been contemplating going shorter with the coming heat! Esp with all those beautiful short hair pics everyone keeps posting.
Go for it!

oh, i think your hair looks great short!!
i just went short two weeks ago and am loving it! i went shorter because i am growing out my gray hair and felt it would make the transition slightly easier -- i'm only 6 1/2 weeks into the grow out.
the surprise was how much i love my hair shorter!!! if when my hair is all gray, i may grow it back to where it was, or, keep it this length. it's only hair, it'll grow, right? and, it dries sooooo much faster!
and the cut in your photo looks great.
i'm also a 3a, yet, the other surprise is how curly my hair is -- usually not so curly. i think it's a combo of products and the cut itself. i was not cg last time i had shorter hair.
i say, go for it!

I think your hair looks really nice short. If you look in my fotki, there is at least one picture of my hair when it was just to my shoulders--it looks pretty skimpy. I think fine, not a lot of hair usually looks fuller when short.

Hi, xcptnl! My hair looks thicker when it's shorter too. Longer lengths seem to pull out the curl and make it look thinner than it is. I get big, thick chunky curls (when I keep my hands out of it anyway) when it's short.

Very cute! Yeah, when mine was last that length or maybe slightly shorter, it went pretty straight on me. If it still curled as well as yours, I'd have gone that short when I had it chopped a couple of months ago and gotten rid of even more of the old color.
Go for it - it'll soon grow back if you don't like it after all. Mine has grown a lot in the 8 weeks since I got so much cut off.

I think I might do it! I am actually considering making an appt with my stylist from back in those days. I have not been to her in probably 4 years-I had started going into Boston to get my hair cut and then I moved. She cut my hair wet but I always thought she did a decent job with the short cut. And she would be 1/2 the price of my current stylist.

You are so right! But that short cut I had was not done well at all. I liked her for trims but for that cut - not so much!

Exactly! So we had the right to whine because we were growing out bad cuts. I would go back to the old stylist too, you got a good cut and it was cheaper. I haven't had a short cut from this new stylist, don't know how it would go. She like my hair around shoulder length too. I like turtlelover's new cut, but I don't think it would work on me.

*cringe* why would you want to do that xcptnl? I'm sure John will go shorter if that's what you want. Remember that you said no one has ever been able to get your sides to curl the way he does. Don't do it.....trust me you'll regret it.

Maybe you could go to John for the initial cut, then go to the old stylist when the style is fresh so she can see it. Then maybe she can keep it up after that, as a short cut will need to be trimmed more often to be kept in shape and at the right length.

I'm just not convinced that any stylist would do for Exceptional curls such as Ms. xcptnl herself

Del has convinced me John must do this first cut. Great suggestion CurliLocks. I will probably make an appt in the next 2-3 weeks.
