I'm intrigued...

Sorry if this has been brought up before.

So reading threads yesterday I seen ck (curl keeper) talked about and being compared to ky. I started a little research and found a personal lubricant at a local health food store and checked out the ingredients (its like 10.00 for 2 oz. btw).

Deionized water, sorbitol, glycerine, tocopheryl acetate, xylitol, cinnamon oil, allantoin, isopropyl myristate, sucrose laurate, hydroxypropyl methycellulose, carbomer, potassium sorbate, vanillin, polysorbate 20, methylparaben, triethanolamine.

At the top of the list is glycerine. I'm not sure about the other items because I'm not a chemist, but what I'm thinking is would just buying the glycerine and mixing it with water do the same thing? Or are the other ingredients imperitive to getting the same results as the kc/ky?

I've done a search for glycerine on the boards, and seen uses for it but I didn't come across anything comparing it to the lube or the kc, so no I'm intrigued.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Think it was franfaircloth that used glycerin in some "trials" last year.

I'll edit if I can find her post.

Thanks for the links.

She added the avg to the glycerin, which is not naturally in ck or lube anyway, so that's not quite what I'm trying to accomplish. If I have to buy lube to add to the glycerin then I'd be defeating the purpose of what I'm proposing here, and that defeats what I'm trying to accomplish as well. I'd like to use the glycerin with other natural ingredients to obtain the results as best I can without breaking my wallet by buying the ck/or the lube... and without putting those other ingredients in if its not necessary.

From what I seen on the ck video I found, you end up using a lot of product. I'm thinking the product will go rather quickly. As far as the lube, 10.00 for 2 oz is too much for me to pay. My hair is thick and I'm afraid it will be used up way too fast to justify the cost. Maybe I'm just cheap haha.

Guess I will just get to work on my own formulations to see what I can come up with. It's the weekend, I have no plans.. This should be interesting.

You could get generic KY at a drug store. If I remember correctly, it doesn't have a lot of ingredients in it.
You could try glycerine but you might want to make sure you don't overdo it on the glycerine. I don't have any experience, so I don't know what to tell you.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

I am a sulfate washing, cone slabbing, curly lovin' s.o.b. The CG police haven't caught me yet.

Glycerin and water alone will generally give you either greasy or dry hair (depending on the humidity of your area). IMO it does need other ingredients added to it to make it work well for anything other than a basic moisture spritz.
