Default True Curlies: Are wavies inferior to curlies?

For those of you that are *truly* curly, what do you think about those who are wavy? I ask this because of the recent threads about what it is like to be a wavy and me reminiscing about a hurtful experience in English class. Are wavies more straight than curly? Can they even relate to those with curly hair? Are wavies inferior to curlies?

My experience was in my English class senior year a true curly girl looked at my hair and said it was nice, but your hair is not straight straight, but just wavy. I felt a bit hurt, because first, even though my hair isn't as curly as hers, I consider myself to be a curly. My hair is a lot wavier than what many consider to be wavy. I get lots of ringlets too. And she also sounded like I really had no idea what she goes through to. I DO know to a lesser extent. I've straightened my hair. I've had brushes stuck in my hair and nearly broken. I wore my hair in ponytails everyday for years. I cried because I couldn't wear certain hairstyles. My ponytail was never thin even if I straightened it. It was a fat bushy mess.

When the revolution comes, wavies will be revealed for the low imposters that they are and driven into the mines along with their secret compatriots, the straighties, and forced to excavate long tunnels that will be used for super secret curly hair styling research. Curlies who straighten will be sent to reeducation camps and allowed to reenter society as upper servants and overseers of the wavie internment camps. Straighties will be forced to sleep in the mines in large corrals, and fed only once a day. Thus will the curlies assert their true nature and reform society as God no doubt intended from creation.

I am a wavy and don't consider myself curly at all. IMO curlies have it way easier than we do! Wavy hair is different from day to day. You can never get a consistent pattern as you can with curly hair. When you're wavy you have to watch out for things that will weigh down the waves, but also find something heavy enough to enhance them. It's a big pain if you ask me! I have a curly friend that just scrunches in some gel and uses hairspray, and her hair looks great all the time! The main thing she has to fight with is frizz. But when you don't really have to worry much about your hair getting weighed down, then you can use heavier products for that. If I was to try that, I'd end up with limp hair. So yeah, wavies are not curly to me

I have 3a hair, and when it was shorter, it was wavy. So, of course I regard wavies as part of the clan. All are true curlies.

I, for one, welcome our new curly overlords.

I have very curly hair and I tend to think that wavies have it much easier. But it's a "grass is always greener..." thing for me. I prefer the look of wavy hair.

I wish that were true for me! Consistency?? With curls?? Sometimes they are flat, sometimes they are wonky, sometimes they look really good. (half the time when I am sitting at home with no one to see them!)

I think we're all curlies. I'm nearly convinced that the greater difference lies in the texture of the hair, like fine or coarse and all the degrees in between. Something that works great and consistently for one 3B with coarser hair won't work at all for me because it does weigh my hair down, even though I'm 3B myself.

Personally, I love my hair, but I do wish that I could achieve wavy status sometimes. Que sera sera.

Now this is a funny post

As a wavy myself, I think of waves as loose curls.

Well, I don't think wavies are true curlies b/c they are wavies! There are so many different types of curls and waves (curds and wheys?) they can't really be all grouped into one thing.

However, I agree w/ the grass is greener thing. I always thought straighties had it easy, but then again, it's the straighties who say "your hair must be so easy to get up and go".

I think it depends on how "done" you have to be. Some people are probably get up and go, but I wouldn't leave the house like that!

Wavies are curlies to me, just with looser bedroom curls No, I'm not jeaous ...

As far as straighties thinking our hair must be easier, I think it is because it takes them so long to get curls and we have them built in. So they assume it is less work.

I've got to second the consistency thing. I think wavies have a much harder time with consistency than either straighties or true curlies. That said, I do think we're closer to the curly universe than the straight one. Whoever heard of a true straightie with frizz? Fighting frizz and making curl/wave definition is something unique to curly and wavy hair.

Actually I have seen many straighties who have flyaways, which I think is how frizz shows itself in them. My niece has fine, stick straight hair and has flyways towards the ends of her hair. She has yet to get it to lay smooth.

Hmmm. I have a number of in-laws and friends with stick straight hair, and they've never mentioned this kind of problem, nor have I noticed it on them. I think any hair type can have flyaways (babies with straight hair often do), but I think frizz, as I think of it, is a uniquely curly problem. Maybe it's just semantics. I've never seen a straightie with a halo of frizz.

And on the subject of frizz.......seriously what do you do? Its been rainy and in the 60s here and I can just feel the frizz growing as I walk. I've tried AnGell (frizz bonanza) and the Jessicurl products (less frizz but, skinny, wimpier waves that don't start until past the tops of my ears). I'm trying Curl Keeper now which seems better than Jessicurl in terms of curliness but still a ton of frizz.

I think the stuff that straighties get is static which is also no fun.

I've learned to just accept a certain amount of frizz. Keeping my hair moisturized helps a lot. Also, if it's a really humid day, I use a little spray gel on the canopy before frizz happens to kind of lock in reasonably smooth hair.
