Default Have you ever been called a hippie...

....because of your curly hair? I have, on more than a few occasions. I don't know that its my hair for sure, but I am a pretty conservative, modest, and safe person in general. I do sometimes dress in the "boho" trend...but i can't help but think that its because of my hair! Anybody else ever had this happen?

I think people automatically associate curly hair with free spiritedness (is that a word?). Like a modern day hippie! I know it fits for me!

No, though I have gotten adjectives. It's interesting how things come to mean the opposite of what they originally meant or how opposing stereotypes can coexist for the same thing. Like how certain anti-curlies attribute curls to being a sign someone is rough, crude and tomboyish. While at the same time curls can be synonymous with romantic feminity. And with the hippie thing it's interesting curls are now a sign someone dresses "boho" and is all earthmother connected to nature becuase in most pictures the iconic hippy has long straight hair.

well not because of my hair. Mostly because I'm into peace and I'm vegetarian. They think I'm some hippie but I don't know how you get vegetarian out of being a hippie.

I've been called "period head" because my hair color.
And also saying my curls look like pubic hair or something like that or another. That was in middle school.Darn kids can be so mean at that age.

AAhhhhh gorgeous! I'm jealous of that volume! I'd happily wear earth sandals and eat tree bark for hair like that.

I get called Shirley Temple sometimes too. Hippy? No. One time I wore a scent that had a patchouli smell, and was told "don't wear that anymore, it makes you smell like a hippy." LOL
I've been called a rocker with my hair.

No but people have called me "granola" a few times. It's okay, I kinda am: vegetarian, eco-conscious, into nature, all that jazz …

Think so, or more it was that I identify with hippiness. What I do remember is being told it makes me seem "liberal."

A guy I knew in junior college was surprised that I have some conservative viewpoints...he's a conservative Mormon. He said something along the lines of "it just doesn't look like you would think that..."

Other people I went to school with seemed to think the same at times. One of my best friends from school was basically a Marxist and when we came to know each other and have fun with our differences, I also realized I wasn't what she thought at first. I've had conversations with professors where they seemed to get a bit surprised where I was coming from. Not taken aback surprised I do like some bohemian and ethnic looks, mostly with tops, so that could be part of it.

haha, yes...quite often. I'm pretty liberal, have long wavy hair, wear little makeup, dress a little hippie sometimes, like the outdoors; so people who know me call me a hippie! I guess in other places people wouldn't see me that way but I live in the bible belt so I stand out a bit I guess. I don't care and I sort of consider it a compliment.

I'm sure my hair has something to do with it, but how I dress, think and act and the music I like probably have more to do with it... I was just told I was "so earthy, I love it" by my coworker yesterday...have no clue what she was referring to specifically, but I'll take it as a compliment...

I haven't been called a hippie because of my hair, but today I was jokingly called such because of the earrings I got; wood hoop peace signs. LOL

They'll go well with the jeans, flip flops or leather Jesus sandals, natural-look makeup, recycling, cloth reusable shopping bags...

Yes, when my hair was longer - ALL the time. Probably because of the way I dressed then too.

Also called Shirley Temple a few times now that my hair is shorter.
