Texture/Volume Reduction

For those of you who want less volume and less curl, how do you minimize the mass and texture of your hair?

What products and techniques do you find most useful for control the two?

I am a VERY thick 3b, looking to minimize both.

Thanks

These two techniques have helped to reduce volume for me:

Raking and smoothing in products, no scrunching! I also need to be careful when scrunching out the crunch, cause that when my volume starts to kick in. I don't scrunch upwards, but I put my hair in my hands as if I will make a ponytail and gently scrunch sideways.

Airdrying, I wish I had the time to airdry more often, it makes a big difference for me. Diffusing means more volume (and frizz)

Products that reduce volume:
These are my 2 favourite routines:
KCKT or KBB hair nectar as leave-in, KCCC as styler. I can go without a gel over it, although sometimes I use a bit of HEBE on top.
KBB hair milk, rinsed out, kbb hair nectar as leave-in. HEBE on top.
I don't know if you ever used coconut milk. My hair hangs better when I've done a dt with coconut milk.

I have 3B/3C curls, I'm really not sure about texture and porosity. I'm thinking medium texture (always thought I was coarse, but my hair likes protein) and high porosity.

I get Reba McEntire (old school version) hair when I diffuse. If I am not feeling that I let my hair airdry most of the way, then dry just the scalp and encourage a bit of curl. I get decent volume without it being out of control.

KCCC definitely takes the volume out of my hair.

after i got my new hair cut, i've been driving myself crazy looking for ways to minimize volume!!! i have layers, but my hair just seems to all shrink up to one length anyways! and KCKT + KCCC does not elongate my curls at all!!! to me, the combo just exaggerates your current hair patterns while defining it. i dunno if that makes sense...

Do you apply your gel/styling product to your hair divided in 4 sections? That might help. It works better for me than just applying it to 2 sections.
3a/b medium/coarse but mostly moderately coarse, dense, strong strands
Komaza analysis current: medium to thick/ strands(mostly coarse), very strong elasticity, low porosity(some is), healthy strong hair
Goosefootprints: moderately coarse with some medium; low porosity at roots, normal thru shaft, porous ends.
LCLF:medium,normal,normal
Rudeechick: as another thick-haired gal, I'm wondering if you had any tips on drying our hair? Are you just a very patient person and let it air dry?
Btw, this volume discussion has been veeeery helpful to me and I can't wait to try out some of the tips.
2c-3a. Thick density. Texture = mixture of medium and fine.

Always trying to boost my curl!

Go-to products: Pink Boots, CJSG, LALSG, Abba Pure Finish gel
Experimenting with: CJAF, CJ CCCC, JCRR/CC, BRHG, PB Goo, Re:Coil, Komaza CHP, EcoStyler Protein
Didn't like: HESMU, Matrix Biolage Gelee (both too goopy)

Well, I dont have the option of airdrying - my hair dries way to full and dense if I do. I have to diffuse (or use R2D2 hair dryer), which I dont mind, as its faster that the HOURS my hair takes to air dry.

I will say that certain products affect drying times (liquids and glazes dry faster - puddings and cremes take the longest). DMHJ helps my hair dry faster and gives great curl boost. KCCC takes FOREVER to dry.... etc.

Interesting! I'm astonished you can make your hair look that good with diffusing! I always thought diffusing made it frizzy.
What is DMHJ, by the way?

DMHJ - Donna Marie Honey Jelly. Its thin and liquidy and really promotes and holds curls (under gel that is).

Using a Butter or Pomade when my hair is 100% dry has worked to minimize bulk for me. Some say more condish does the trick for them but for me it just leaves me without definition and poofy. Using butters on dry hair adds some weight, shine and definition.

See my explanation of banding in your other thread. Here's the definition of how looser curls end up looking like after banding from a looser curlie:

[With my hair being natural I was looking for a way to air-dry so that my hair would be stretched out as much as it can get before I flat iron. The results I got from my little "experiment", lol, were similar to a blow-out for me but w/o the heat. My roots were straight and the rest was fluffy and very stretched out, semi/straight. What I did was wash and condition as normal, put my hair in two ponytails and used my Denman brush to smooth out each ponytail as much as possible. Then I took about 12 rubber bands and secured the ponytail all the way down, straight, making sure to keep smoothing and adding another rubber band as I made my way down. When I got to the end I used one of those knockers that little girls wear for some weight, otherwise my hair would try to curl up.]

Del , I know you love mlisture in dry hair; but with me it just makes me greasy and pulled out as opposed to loose.

Kinky, that is a great method! Will have to tell my neices who are teenage 4a who like mainly straight hair.

I am looking for looser curls, banding would pull out too much texture for me. Thanks tho!

I know I have already posted alot but then I remembered this thread. You might not be able to use it, seems a bit like banding in that you will probably end up with a straighter canopy and loose waves at the bottom. But seems like a good technique anyone else might want to try who has tighter curls and wants to relax them naturally. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Relaxing my CURLS.... naturally...>>

I know a lot of you are trying to "enhance your curls" to bring them out.... but I kept trying to "relax my curls".

I tried this and love the results, for me.
My hair is mixed textures...some 3a, 3b and 3c.

1. CO-Wash my hair. Leave Tresemme in my hair and squeeze out the excess. Comb it through my hair.

2. Twist my wet hair up into 1 large twist at ponytail height on my head.

3. Clip the ends of the twist back to my head (where the twist starts). That way the twist folded back on itself and made a cute looking french twist.

4. I was able to wear it and sleep on it for 2 days while it dried before I let the curls down to fall into loose curls. Just what I was looking for !!

I think this will be perfect for summertime too !!

LEFT PIC: my hair if I DONT twist it and let it dry.
MIDDLE PIC: Relaxed curls - naturally.
RIGHT PIC: Single twist while drying.

I do think some people use banding as a pre-step to straightening for that reason.

If I air dry i get HUGE, DENSE hair; I need to diffuse to lock in the product so the sheer mass of my hair is controlled.

Ok fellow suffers: I'm NOT saying this reduced my texture OR volume, but it maintained it with great success: Aquage Defining Gel - def worth looking into. I posted a review in the Product review Boards.

Thanks for the input and , please, keep inputting!

...a method similar to Kinky Keeper's. If I wet-bun my hair I can get nice, smooth, lower-volume waves but ONLY if I let it dry 100%. Usually I get impatient and take it down too early and that just makes matters worse.

I have HUMONGOUS hair so I'm always looking for ways to tone down the volume. I know that sounds like a problem a lot of people *wish* they had but for those of us who do it is a freaking disaster. Anyway, some things I've learned:

For me, leaving in conditioner is a big no-no; major puffiness and no hold or definition.

NO scrunching, plopping, or diffusing. I rake product in quickly and get the heck out of my hair. The less touching the better.

TONS of product. There's a girl at my part-time job who has stunning long waves that she gets beautiful shine and definition in. I asked what she used for styling and she said "About a can of mousse a day." Joking, but there's truth in it. I use gobs of gel and make sure every hair is covered.

Great care with SOTC. Some days I don't even bother, just leave the hair crunchy and wet-looking. I don't love it like that (but I don't "love" my hair any way curly) but it is better than risking a SOTC if it's extra humid out and my hair is taking too long to dry.

I NEVER touch my hair without some product in it, usually gel or serum.

And avoid ANY product that calls itself "volumizing." This seems self-evident but I'm always blinkered by advice here that people should use volumizing products--among other things they are very drying.
Modified CG. You'll pry my 'cones from my cold dead fingers! Mixed waves, coarse, below shoulder length, dark brown. I hate my hair but I'm trying to learn to accept it.

Gels: LA Looks Wet Look Styling Gel, Garnier Fructis Wet Shine Gel. Condish: Alberto V05 Free Me Fresia, Tresemme' Flawless Curls, LVPNG, Neutrogena Triple Moisture. Shampoo: Tresemme' Flawless Curls. Silicone Serum: Whatever is on sale, but I don't leave home without it.
