It's back with vengence....
I know that it's been posted before, but this is a semi- update.
I had posted before on my hair being really dry in the back but not anywhere else...anyway i cut off the super dry hair and moisturized a ton.
BUT...
It's BACK!
I've been using biolage conditioning balm and herbal essences body envy mousse or set me up gel.
It's really dry when it's wet especially because right now (dry) it feels reasonable. However, it's really really really really frizzy, and i'm at a complete loss.
I've read up like crazy about this and tried just about everything but i need help!
P.S. The dryness isn't limited to just the back, it's dry everywhere just the most dryness is in the back.

Are you using the KY? It could be the glycerin. I'm not really familiar with HE products so I don't know if that may be the cause. The few times I tried them, they frizzed me out.
Is your driest spot your curliest part of hair?
I have been using more conditioner on the top part of my hair (which tends to be drier) than the bottom hair (which is constantly on the verge of oc-ing).
Maybe switching up the stylers will help.
Do you use leave in?

I don't use the KY anymore, or at least not regularly because of the glycerin.
I do use a leave-in, either biolage conditioning balm, or one of the live clean conditioners.
The driest part isn't necessarily the curliest, it's pretty even all over my head except for the bottom.
I tried the live clean gel today and it still had the same effect (as in it didn't help), didn't improve it but didn't make it any worse either.

do you sleep on your back or rest the back of your head against something a lot during the day? that did it to me for a while until I figured out what was doing it.

I sleep all over my head haha. But i do try to avoid sleeping or resting the back of my head on anything. Plus, it's the top that is the most dry compared to the rest of my hair which i would have to sleep directly on the top of my head to cover haha

Hmm...could you be rinsing out too much of your conditioner in that spot? Maybe trying rinsing with your head upside down?

You know, biolage never oc'ed me, but suave does. Maybe if you switch to heavy application of suave, you can get some real conditioning in. The icequeen method works well for heavy application.
How exactly does it feel when your hair is wet? If it feels dry when wet, my understanding is that you might have overdone a protein. Do any of your products have any proteins?

I do rinse upside down....and I'm protein senstive so i rarely use anything with protein...it feels like it isn't getting moisturized by the conditioner

Hi Musical Junkie,
I am fairly new to the board so bear with me.
My Hair felt the same way before I chopped off all the relaxed ends that were damaged.
Within the space of a week My natural hair went from dry to soft and shiny.
I have been using Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner as a leave in. I dont rinse it out. I then add IC fantasia daily Hair treatment, not the gel. The gel is different. I dont use gel. My hair is totally different from before I started that regime.
Just a few questions?
Do you use heat on your hair?
If so then heat might be the cause of your dryness.
Do you Cowash or Shampoo?
If you cowash only it might not be enough to get rid of build up on hair this can lead to dryness.
If you shampoo, try putting some essential oils mixed in with your shampoo can make you hair softer. I have been trying this and it works wonders.
Another cause of dryness could be mousse and gels. These are notorious for drying out hair.
Also when I did my big chop I realised that I had two stubborn dry spots on the sides of my head. Well, Since starting my new regime in just the space of one week my dry spots have gone. Literally gone that now I cant believe how much improved my hair was. I also was planning to cut out the dry spots like you but thank God I didnt.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if you have or not, but maybe try the flax seed gel. My hair gets like that at times, its curlier in the crown, frizzier, and seems dryer. I tried the flax gel for the first time yesterday and it seemed to help the problem unlike anything else I've tried.

Which Suave are you using? Do you DT regularly?
What are the ingredients of the Live Clean? I've never heard of that before..

I was about to ask the same things. I think some of the Suave's have protein, and like curlyjenn, I've never heard of Live Clean but it may, too. The dry feel while wet is classic for protein overload/sensitivity. Wheat protein, in particular, can cause bad reactionsn for some people.
Check all your products to be sure they don't contain SD, denatured, or isopropyl alcohol - very drying. Cetyl and cetearyl (sp?) alcohol are actually moisturizing. Check for mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, or any other petroleum products - all bad. Castor oil, hydrogenated or not, can cause these kinds of problems for some people.

Im using the strawberry and green apple suave....umm i can't find the ingredients online for the live clean conditioners...but they are CG and protein free...i'll type them out later as i'm on my way out.
I don't regularly DT because i haven't found a good one yet. Most contain protein or jojoba oil which my hair can't stand.
DRAS:
I don't use heat on my hair. Also I mostly co-wash with the occasional low-poo. I tried not using gel or mousse today and my hair is still dry and frizzy but i'll give it a shot.
