In deseperate need for hair help

My hair is so blah right now.t barely curls at all. it's taking every ounce of restraint that i have not to just straighten it and be done with it. my hair is all one length and has A LOT of volume so when it drys it looks ridiculous most of the time. I'm thinking that if i added layers it would help with this issue? Only problem is that i live in Mississippi, a basically unmentioned state on this site so i have no clue if there's a good salon around here. i'm already scared to death of hair stylist so this just adds to the drama. Is adding layers pretty much the same for straight and curly? if so then it wouldn't be hard to find a stylist but something tells me the answer is no. ahh this is so fustrating!

ANY insight would be much welcomed. i really hope somebody can help me

Layers can definitely help bring your hair back to life. If you are afraid to go to a stylist you could always do it yourself. In this thread micol124 explains how she cut her layers (before the bob you see in her avatar) and there are pics of what it looked like in her fotki. If you do a search there are a lot of curlies that cut their own hair.

You didn't mention what products and techniques you are using though. Maybe you could try some new routines before you decide to cut.

If your hair is all one length and voluminous, your hair sounds like it would do good with a couple of layers. The layers will lighten the load and give it a better shape.

As far as getting a stylist, I'm sorry to say that I have no advice. I'm scared of getting my hair cut by a sylist, so I trim it (and sometimes hack away at it) myself. But I don't think that the layers work the same.

Hopefully a stylist (or someone who sees one) can answer that question for you.

Mix of 3s, thick, coarse, medium porosity

Current hair styling technique: rake with a scrunch at the end. (works with my coarse hair)
