Less product = more volume (duh moment!)

Oh good grief.... I've been on these boards for nearly a year, and one of my curly goals all along has been volume for my very fine 3B hair. I've plopped, clipped, diffused, pineappled (thought after a certain length it's more like weeping-willowed), tried countless product combinations.... all with limited success.

Innyhoo, felt lazy yesterday so instead of my usual routine of cowash+rinse-out+leave-in+gel+plop+clip roots+diffuse, I detangled and rinsed my hair completely of condish, then plopped my product-free hair for five minutes while dressing, then let it air dry and forgot about it while I made dinner. Imagine my shock, then, when I looked in a mirror two hours later to see airy but fairly defined curls with almost too much volume! All I did at that point was smooth a minimal amount of Aloe Fix and water over the canopy and underside, which tamed frizzies and made the curls *pop*!!!

Okay, seriously?!?!?! All along, this was all I had to do?! Tried again today, the only thing I did differently was leave in some KBB Nectar and clip the roots to encourage root curl, and I'm pretty sure this is the best my hair has ever looked and felt at this length!

Moral of the story: Sometimes, simplicity really is best!

I have been doing this at night when I shower. I work in a barn so I don't care what I look like in the morning.

I have been getting some awesome volume in my 3a curls, plus I just ordered AF.

so now it's confirmed why More Product=Less Volume if I did what you did opera I would be a gigantic poof ball! Glad you had a light bulb moment, it could also be the warmer weather and humidity giving you a boost in addition to your new less is more approach.

I have found the same thing to be true opera. Everytime a I would try a new product, I would join the application wagon everyone else was on. A few weeks' ago I hopped off the KCCC application wagon and to my delight I finally liked KCCC. I used half or less what others use. I, too, had more volume and it dried so much faster.

I find less product but the right ones give me more volume but not more pouf.

Seek not to change the world. Rather seek to change your mind about the world.
I'm finding the same thing. I changed up my routine (leave in, curl cream, scrunch with towel, gel) to eliminate the curl cream and instead I do leave-in + 2 drops of agave nectar, gel, and then scrunch with the towel. This has made my hair much lighter and airier but still very defined, and the curls have a much better shape. Sometimes less is more!!

That's great, opera_curls! I'm on that bandwagon, too -- less is usually more in my case. So much so that even if I'm using small amounts of things, I tend to stick with two products or less.

I don't know if I could be successful smoothing just Aloe Fix gel and water on my dried hair, but what the heck -- tomorrow is a holiday and I just may give it a try!

I wonder if the weather plays a role?

The weather/humidity probably affects the outcome. I live in a fairly temperate area, last summer I remember the humidity being between 40% and 65% most days and between 80-100 degrees F. I'm trying to figure out the whole dew point thing... I do know that this pared-down routine would NOT have been successful during winter - too much rain and wind.

Jillipoo and CurlyHairedFarmer, previous to my accidental discovery, I had been using the Aloe Fix on wet hair over a leave in, applying it as mysteryflavored did KCCC in her video last year. I'll probably still do that some days because I like the definition and clumps I get (no crunch, either). Applying it to dry hair smoothes frizz and actually tightened my curls to 3C springlets. My hair reacts this way to AVG too, but the Aloe Fix doesn't make it feel crunchy or coarse in dry weather.

Forgot to add about the Aloe Fix: It's really thick, but emulsifies easily and I can smooth it on my frizz-prone crown without getting weighted down or greasy looking. You have to try to over-apply this stuff.

That is so interesting because I woke up this morning and was going to start a post like that too! I have just been layering the products on in gobs...it looked good and I had no problems, but two days in a row I purposely put lots less on and I had tons of volume and still great curls. Imagine my surprise!

opera_curls, I don't remember--are you low porosity? I know I use minute amounts of product--but I have a lot less hair then you do, too. Since the product isn't absorbed by the hair as easily, less is usually more then enough, LOL!

You know...I've been having some issues lately with my hair turning out horribly...and I do mean horribly after my normal shower/style routine. Reading this thread has me thinking that product overload might be the culprit. I'm gonna try a curl lotion mixed with a small amount of gel and be done with it tonight and see how it goes. I miss my hair's volume
