Default Hair type (besides the number)

Hello all
I've been reading the forums, and a lot of you seem to have your hair type completely figured out (as in medium texture, high porosity, etc.) How do you find your specific hair type, and how should certain types of hair be handled differently? All I know is that my hair is 3b and THICK.
