Default When Your Hair Feels "Dry" after No-Poo?

What does it mean when your hair isn’t dripping wet with water after you co-poo/rinse out with conditioner? I’ve been having this problem and it’s my first week of CG. After rinsing out and putting leave-in conditioner in my hair, I notice that my hair has already started to frizz, and I don’t even need to scrunch out with my Curls Like Us towel because there isn’t really any excess water. Might this have to do with the protein in my L’oreal Nutri Gloss Vive Pro conditioner? Or is it just part of the CG growing pains?

Everthing I've ever read about that says it's because of build up- usually silicone - on the hair preventing it from getting any water to it. Do you use any products with silicone or did you clarify before you started?

If you're still using silicones - you'll need to do a good clarifying wash with a sulfate shampoo to remove any silicone buildup. Also, make sure your clarifying shampoo doesn't have any cones in it either.

Thanks for the info. Well, I did a clarifying wash with Garnier Fructis Body Boost shampoo, which I don't think has any silicones in it. I'm using CG-friendly products currently (co-wash: Suave Tropicals Coconut; rinse-out: L'oreal Nutri Gloss Vive Pro; leave-in: Lustrasilk; styling: Pink Boots, KCCC, and BRHG), so I'm not sure what's going on...

Are you using the right L'Oreal conditioner? There's only one that doesn't have cones as far as I know. The curls rock in your signature has cyclomethicone but that shouldn't be a big deal.

I would suggest doing a clarifying poo again and see if it changes anything. if it does... something might have cones in it.

Hmmm, the L'oreal conditioner has Amodimethicone in it, which I believe has been mentioned by other people before. But isn't this ingredient water-soluble, so buildup shouldn't happen?

But I just realized that the Garnier has Hexylene Glycol in it, which is a silicone. Ugh! I guess I'll start it all over again...

No amodimethicone isn't water soluble. It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that it's mixed with certain ingredients in the formulation to make it soluble in the formula but not on the hair. Does that make sense?

Let us know if the sulfate shampoo fixes it.

Thanks for the help. I'll switch to a sulfate poo with no silicones and toss the L'oreal, then I'll report results.

The regular L'Oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss has amodimethicone in it. Look for the one that says "for medium to long hair that's curly/wavy." It should be cone free.

Yes, I completely didn't realize that the dry/damaged was distinct from the curly/wavy L'oreal Nutri Gloss conditioner! Oh well, you live and learn. :-)

Whenever I've gotten this way it was from too much protein or build up. Is your siggie a complete list of products you use? Do you know if you're porous or what your hair texture is? If you do SLS try a nice DT afterwards to help you recover.

So far the siggie is a complete list of the products I'm using (of course, it's only been for about a week). Yes, I was worried about the protein but at this point, I have no idea whether I'm protein-sensitive or not. My hair is probably between normal and high porosity.

Sorry, not sure what SLS is?

SLS is just short for a Sulphate Poo Which Lustrasilk are you using?

The LustraSilk olive oil cholesterol is what I'm using. So far I've only used it on my ends, because I'm kind of afraid of getting too weighed down. (My hair is pretty fine, so I've been a little daunted by the CG method!)

I agree with Del about the protein. Dry, frizzy hair is a sign of too much protein. When my hair is over-proteined, it looks/feels dry and frizzy when it should be soaking wet. A good deep conditioner should help.

ETA: A-ha! I think I've solved it. You are using a coconut conditioner to co-wash, right? Coconut itself doesn't contain protein but it holds protein in. You shouldn't use coconut products more than a couple times a week or you will get dry and frizzy. I speak from experience.

Thanks for the tip, Lolo. I'm co-washing about twice a week, but I was also using coconut oil about three times a week before that, so maybe it's time to seriously cut down there! Any tips on a good DT?

The only problem I see though is that Fine haired curlies Need Protein.

http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlta...252#post978252

You may just need to switch around your co-wash to something different. Maybe try one of the V05's? I recently tried Suave Waterfall and liked it. Does your version of LVPNG have the A-cone in it?? If it does then you need a Low Poo to prevent build up.....How much coconut oil are you using? I can't co-wash the coconut oil out of my hair I need a Low Poo but that's just the nature of my particular head..

I think I might start with re-doing my SLS and getting a condish without cones. Then if the buildup still feels like a problem, I will look into the proteins. Sadly, my LVPNG DOES have the A-cone (didn't find that out till today), so it's back to square one. I use a substantial amount of coconut oil, but I have noticed that it can dry out my hair. And yes, I know what you mean about having difficulty washing it out in general--sometimes it was hard with a shampoo alone! I have some shampoo bars for clarifying once I get to that point...

Oils can be drying..you could just be using too much coconut oil. Don't stop using it, just use less and take into consideration that your hair is Fine. I love the stuff but I've overdone it myself and gone Coco Happy. I've settled in on a qtr size, sleep on it then wash it out the next day. It has to sit on my hair overnight if I don't do that I have a harder time washing it out. When you look for a rinse out condish find one that has some protein too, it's good for you fine haired curlies! Try the Health food store, they seem to have more options then the drug store and they aren't really more expensive. I've heard some good things about Burts Bees Conditioners you may want to check the product reviews, you can find that one at some Walmarts and Target too.

Thank you, DEL2C! This is very, very helpful. My hair has been like this for a while (before my version of CG) so I'm thinking that as many modifications as possible will be good. :-)
