Default What are your favorite oils?

I'd like to have a few more oils for my hair and face. I've been studying the natural care and recipes sections, but thought I'd ask for your specific advice here.

I already use jojoba and coconut oils, plus Ojon RT, JCN&S, and shea butter. I have a few essential oils (rosemary, lavender, etc.). From what I've read, I'm particularly interested in castor oil, almond, and camellia oil, but I see people are using so many others -- broccoli seed? carrot? emu? (really, emu? as in oil of an ostrich-type bird? )

I've seen some posts pro & con about castor oil and some mention Jamaican black castor oil. Is regular drugstore castor oil OK or to be avoided? What is the deal with the Jamaican black castor oil? Is the main thing to look for unrefined expeller-press oils, or? Again, I'm thinking of using oils both for the OCM (skin care routine) and for hair. I'm making my own FSG so it might go in there, or currently I use coconut oil or the Ojon or JCN&S as a pre-poo/overnight treatment, and jojoba as a frizz tamer/softener on dry days.

Also, if you have a rec to one source or another for online ordering or a particular brand in the stores, that would be great. I have been looking at Garden of Wisdom thus far for online orders.

Thank you!

Shawnette replied to this post about condish with great info on what oils to use for your hair. It might really help you decide what to add to your homemade concotions.

I don't use the OCM but I do use Vitamin E on my face every day as part of my natural skin care routine. It has worked better for me than anything else so far but the emu oil does intrigue me.

Thank you, Jess. That's a very helpful thread.

Can you tell me a bit more about your vitamin E oil? What kind do you buy -- is it pure E or E in a carrier oil? I never know if it's OK to buy whatever's at the drug store or if I need to find something special elsewhere. Thanks again.

It's pure E that I get from Whole Foods. I use it in place of evoo in my routine as a moisturizer. For my oils I usually go to whole foods or my local health food store but it may just be my mind tricking itself into thinking they are better.

Thanks, Jess. I'm the same way, and in a lot of cases I'm sure they are better quality.

I just love avocado oil and camellia oil.

I use the avocado oil (the one you use for cooking)for everything: hair, face and body, it makes my skin really soft. (doesn' smell to good though)

The camellia oil I have in my hair and in my face, it's smells lovely and makes my hair shine and it's good for my face too.

I don't really use oils much on my hair- but if I did it would be Almond oil. I much prefer the smell and texture to other oils I have tried!

You didn't mention this oil, but I use extra virgin olive oil as part of my oil cleanse method. I've also been using it as a moisturizer on my face afterwards by itself and also after my shower on my body. I *love* it. I've been wanting to try it in my hair, but I'm afraid it might not come out with a co-wash. I'd really just want it mainly for my scalp, but I'm a bit afraid to try it just yet. I only smell like a salad for a little while.

maja21, can you get the avocado oil out of your hair with a co-wash?

Camellia, avocado, vatika, bring-raj & Ramtirth brahmi oils (the Indian oils are coconut or sesame based) are my favorite for hair/scalp. Camellia & rice bran oils work well on my combination skin. I don't care for straight castor, olive or jojoba...

I do like Emu, broccoli seed, carrot seed and jojoba! I like them because they are the lightest oils. Broccoli seed seem to be the lightest and gives a nice shine. Emu and jojoba are great for the scalp and I may smooth a drop on my hair before I go to bed and they are good for skin. I like olive oil treatments with heat; it gives my hair more body.

I haven't used oils on my hair in a while but I really like Kemi oil (you can get it from SBS)... I loved the way that it made my hair feel and smell...

I don't use any oils in my hair but I do use them for cleansing and moisturizing my skin. My favorites for that are castor and olive oil. I mix up a tub of 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 castor oil and put that on my face every morning and night, then wipe off with a washcloth. Sometimes I'll pour a tiny cup of sugar and add this into it to make a scrub. As for the Black Jamaican Castor Oil, I'm not sure. I use normal castor oil from anywhere and I get good results.

Yes, without any problems . I usually put it in the day before washing day and sleep with it, so some is soaked up by the hair and the rest is probably on my pillowcase

For my face (OCM) - camellia, rose hip seed, baobab and castor in a mix.

For my hair - Jamaican black castor oil and regular castor oil (the Jamaican one has a smell and is less tackier than the regular); and grapeseed. I occasionally use a few drops of baobab on my dry hair.

Thanks. I'm guessing olive oil would be similar to the avocado oil and probably come out with a co-wash then as well.

I love Camellia, Jojoba, Strawberry, Papaya, & Sunflower. I also like Burt's Bees Apricot Baby oil. All are light and leave my hair soft and shiny.

Hey Afrosheenqueen, where do you find your strawberry and papaya oils, those sound exotic

Strawberry is a little pricey compared to the others. $8 for a 1/2 ounce so I use it sparingly. Papaya is better price wise.

I've seen it at FNWL too but they charge you $5 for an order that is under $20. Also its twice the price for 1/2 ounce for strawberry.

I may try Cherry Kernel oil next. It's cheaper and gets lots of raves.

Oils I love love love...

Dabur Vatika Oil for hair
Jojoba for face and hair
Rosehip Oil for face
My own "summer fruits" oil blend (Peach, Apricot, Cherry Kernel Oil)

I'm a fan of the light oils that soak in quickly
