Grey hair texture - coarse or fine?
In everything I have read, grey hair is described as coarse. On my head, that doesn't appear to be the case. I have a bumper crop of new greys coming in and they all feel fairly fine, some even baby fine. My hair, the dark brown strands, are medium texture.
I am curious as to what other curlies who are going grey have experienced, as far as the texture of their silver sisters.

Mine aren't course but they're not fine either. Actually, right now they're purple.

Good for you that you're letting your grey hair do it's own thing. I'm way too vain.
My grey is more kinky but it's just as fine as the rest.

Mine's as fine as the rest, too.

Thanks for chiming in, ladies.
Maybe the same people who claim that grey hair is coarse are the same people who claim that curly hair needs to be fixed and straightened within an inch of its life!
I just wondered if there was any scientific evidence or fact behind the assertion. I was also wondering because as more grey hair comes in, I find that a light protein treatment, like AO GPB condish, seems to perk up the curls a bit, especially the fine greys at my temples. Hmmm.....
Speckla - Purple?!?!? Have I missed something?

there was an explanation on www.goinggreylookinggreat.com about why the texture of grey hair is different from hair with more color to it. I can't remember why but I think they said it had something to do with the lack of melanin? My greys are basically the same as my dark brown hairs.

Yeah, I put Ultra Violet Manic Panic in my hair last night. My greys are purply/burgandy and the rest of my hair is much darker with a purple tint. Hey, it's nondamaging and might as well take advantage of not having to bleach to get different colors to work. I've always stuck with "normal" colors before.

I have about 10 or so greys. Most of those are coarse. But, one or two of them are fine. My normal hair texture is medium/fine mix. The coarse ones are horrible being they are a totally different hair texture and they tend to stick out! It's like they are screaming, "Look at me!" I had my hair colored once in 2007 and I will not do it again being I felt my hair wasn't as healthy as it once was. Once it grows out maybe I will try Henna.

I'm about 70% grey and those hairs are really the same as my regular hair. All of my hairs mostly run the spectrum of 3A, 3B, 3C; some are fine, some are coarse; and some of them stick straight out of my head like antennae. I just let it all do it's own thing. It's happy so I'm happy.

I'm 80+% gray and the hairs did come in coarser, more wiry. They needed about twice as much conditioning and moisture. Once I learned how to care fort them, they are good to go.

Mine are the same as the rest of my hair, which is coarse.
DH does have finer straight hair, his gray is coarser and sticks up out of the rest, I think this doesn't show up as much on curly people since some of the regular hair is sticking up too, LOL.

I think my grays (about 50% of my head) are the same as the rest of my hair.
SBB and jeepcurlygurl, I swear you inspire me. I am so tired of coloring my hair and you both look so fabulous with your natural gray.
(Just went to a seminar at lunch today about living with more authenticity... Accepting my gray seems like a good place to start, huh?)

jillipoo - You have just expressed here my reasons for letting my grey hair do its thing - authenticity. Besides, at 46 years of age, I feel as if I have earned every grey hair I have.
And I have to echo your sentiments concerning my 2 grey hair idols, SBB and jeepcurlygurl. You ladies look fabulous and continue to be an inspiration to me personally, and many other nc members.
The more fine greys are coming in in the front hairline. I suppose the hairs are normally more fine there anyways. Most of the other greys throughout the rest of my head do come in looking a little wild. They don't want to curl right away, until they get at least 2 inches long or so, so they do end up sticking out straight almost and not blending in with the rest of their neighbors. Those one's do not feel coarse, more medium like the rest of my head.
Getting enough moisture to my hair has been my biggest issue lately. I notice as I sprout more greys, they do seem to require more and seemingly constant moisture to keep them happy. I just feel like my hair is going through some rapid changes lately, and I strongly suspect my hormones. Ugh.

My greys are wild, like wire. The rest of my hair is medium-fine.
They calm down when I color. I know that's not for you, though.

Jeep is one of the curlies who inspired me. And authenticity is exactly why I did it, the courage to risk being myself and being loved for it. That and the whole hair color thing. So nice to let go of it.

Altho I'm only about 5% gray they are the same as the rest of my hair. I too like to take some temporary colors from time time and streak my hair with them right where the grays are growing out. I've got some bright shocking red that I'm playing around with right now.

My hair is normal/fine and the greys don't seem any different.

Thanks to everyone for your compliments.
And for those who are afraid to let go of the color, either because they don't want to 'look old' or because of the texture of their greys - I always say to do what makes you happy.
But for me it was the best thing ever. "Living with more authenticity" is a great way to put it. It just makes me happier to be me just as I am.
Sorry for the sidetrack.
