for those who stopped using gel

i've used gel all my life because it was the only thing i knew of to keep my hair in check. i used to use tons of it. my hair was always crunchy but i liked it like that. now i hate that. so recently i have been trying to stay AWAY from gels cause even tho i can scrunch out most of the crunch, i still felt it and i wanted soft curls. a lot of curlies say they dont use gel or have cut it out of their regimes. i started cutting it out and it started off really good. next time i tried no gel, i had a little bit of frizz. and then the third time, i had big time frizzing.

for those who stopped using gel, is frizz an issue? if so, what do you use to stop the frizz? i've been using FOTE AVG and KCCC or pink boots with KCCC.

TIA!

I stopped using gel last September when I started to use the more natural products and soap bars. I didn't start back until end of Jan/beginning of Feb--I was loosing my curl in the dry cold we were having. So far, I haven't gone back to not using gel. But have been thinking of it. Unfortunately, I just bought a few, LOL!

I'm slowly decreasing my gel useage.
Yesterday I used 2 big blobs of LaBella lots of curls, then 2 (large lol) pea-sized amounts of BRHG

Today I just used 2 large pea-sized amounts of LA looks for curls and 2 small pea-sized amounts of LA looks Sport. And I didn't actually get any frizz, it's a lot better - not stringy or crunch

I think tomorrow I'm gonna try 2 pea-sized amounts of LaBella and a teeeeeeny bit of LA looks and see how that works

i stopped using gel for a couple days and my hair was looking really good!! and i even told Ella to do it! LOL. but i think i'm just gonna stick to a small amount - just for the frizzies. because technically, i doesnt need it to hold curls, because the back of my hair curls really good and stays curly, but the frame of my face, which usually is not an issue, is acting up! i guess everything is ok in moderation .

Like you, I have to have some for my face frame and for general frizz control. I don't use a great deal, though - maybe a nickel size amount of BRHG or a quarter size of LALSG.

Never used gel at all before going mod-CG - I always used to us use thin sculpting lotions, curl cremes, or sometimes mousses followed by hairspray. Now I seldom use hairspray because of the alcohol, thus, the use of the gel for hold.

I've had success styling with conditioner only. And using OHM SHP alone or with KCCC gives me tons of curls with little frizz. I hate the crunchies too but my hair loves gel so

I use flax seed gel. I love that it is natural. But I don't use very much. I read a few threads where people said they only get 2-3 uses out of a batch of FSG, but mine ends up going bad before I use all of it...only about a tablespoon at a time. It only gets a little crunchy and it's really easy to scrunch out...leaving just soft definition.
I'm having to ween myself of the gel! So tomorrow just a tinnnnny bit, eeek!!
My hair did look good today and didn't frizz too much so we shall see!

Like, the FSG let me with little frizzies too... i dunno... i think my hair is changing.... i usually get frizzies when my hair is wet, but it literally dries to ZERO frizzies... my last good hair day was Sunday:

Silly pic, i know . i was hungry

but look at those sexy ringlets!!!! that was only avg and KCCC! but now, even with the bit gel, its still frizzy and dull.

I have never really used gel at all on my hair- my hair hates gel and will not cooperate if I use it. That's why I have pretty much been a conditioner-only girl since the 10th grade (and I'm 34 now). I used to slather my hair in Tresseme for years and years, but now I use GVP Tea Tree (Paul Mitchell knockoff) and Aussie Moist. Both are thick conditioners with a lot of slip. They are not CG though so I don't know if that's a factor for you.

Conditioner gives you hold, curl definition, and depending on the brand can leave your hair either shiny or dull, but at least you're not going to be crunchy.

Heh, you're so cute!

Do I have frizz? I know I never have quite as controlled a look as some of the curlies here do, but I still think my hair looks pretty good. I suppose you'd have to judge from my pics whether my hair is what you might consider frizzy or not.
KCCC gives my curls plenty of definition. It might not hold up throughout a whole day of wearing my hair down, but I still can't complain.
I've kindof stopped using gel recently...mostly due to being lazy and not having time for it to air dry fully with the gel. My hair has actually been looking better without it. I've just been putting in the GVP conditioning balm.

So, BekkaPoo and the others who just use conditioner how much conditioner do you leave in? I'm leaving in a tablespoon or so but thought more might be better since leaving out the gel. Or, maybe not.

Pre Co-wash: Coconut oil (plain & rosemary)
Co-wash: Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle or Trader Joe's Nourish Spa
Rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm
Leave-in/Styling: Moisture Maniac with Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner on top
I've never used gel, can't stand crunchy stringy hair. I kinda want big, full, but well formed curls.

I live in Utah, and products for curls are not easy to find - but I happened upon Lock and Twist gel at Walgreens http://www.organicrootstimulator.com...lock_twist.htm

It is basically coconut milk and glycerine. I don't form twists with it, I simply apply it like a gel, plop for about 20 minutes, clip let dry and go.

Anyway, it works for me.
hey all. when i leave in conditioner, my hair times looks ashy/ dull. that is why i try to rinse it all out. if its a leave-in conditioner, then i dont get that as much. and i've left in lustrasilk and it was ok. but i guess it depends on the conditioner itself.

sairis- i guess i wouldnt mind a bit of frizzy. but it literally looks like nasty dried frizzie. i think i might need a clarifying wash... or an ACV rinse? my hair is just not looking right

i wish i can the look gel leaves my hair with, without the crunchy... really? this hasnt been invented?! LOL. perfect sales pitch - Get the same look without the crunch!!!! lol.

For more volume I use less conditioner. In that case I rinse out most of it, and going by feel, just leave in enough to feel a little slip, and then seal with an oil or shea butter and air dry.

I've been looking for a good leave-in. I've been using my co-wash (Suave coconut) as my leave in. I'll have to try elastic-i-tea. Thanks.
I only use a leave in, Giovanni 50/50, while my hair is soaking wet, then I plop for 5 minutes, then apply KCCC and let it air dry about 20 min. Then I diffuse for some volume (about 5 minutes or so). I normally don't have frizz as long as I put enough KCCC in.

And if, after my hair is dry, and I notice there is some frizz I add a little more KCCC to my DRY hair and it tames the frizz immediately, adds shine and definition.

Hope that helps!
HG's:
Gel: BRHG mixed with Aura Naturalle Gel or B&A Gel
LI: GVP Conditioning Balm or Giovanni Smooth as Silk,
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (as a DC, before and after dying grays, and like a serum on dry hair)

Method: Air dry 20 minutes, then blow dry for volume.

2/3 mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity, mod-CG routine.
I changed my routine around. I used a pretty non-descript leave in and then KCCC for the first time and a pea sized amount of gel
I LOVVVVVE KCCC!!!!!!! I'll leave out the gel next time. And I feel like my style is 'set' as though I won't have to do it again in the morning yay!
