Question Hair curlier underneath -- products to encourage tighter curls on top?

Hi all -- long-time reader, first time posting!

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to make the top layer of my hair as curly as the underneath layer. I'm not very good with the number/letter hair types, so I'll try to just describe. My underneath hair forms nice boingy ringlet curls with no encouragement whatsoever. I love them. But the top layer of my hair (by which I mean the part that's visible to the world most of the time -- not just the hair closer to the top of my head, if that makes sense) curls much less tightly and uniformly. It ranges from wavy strands to a couple of very loose corkscrews -- and that's all within the same hair day.

I would love for the top layer of hair to look more like the underneath layer. My current routine is a VERY simple CG -- I co-wash and leave-in with Suave coconut, upside-down scrunch with BRHG and a microfiber towel, and then let it air-dry. That's it. I get good definition and shine this way. I've tried lightly diffusing to encourage curling on top, but this tends to create weird-shaped strands for me that just sort of twist every which way.

Any suggestions for CG-friendly products or techniques to make the top layer of my hair curl a little more tightly? I've done some searching on here, but if you know of existing threads on this, feel free to point me toward them. Thanks!

My hair underneath is quite a bit curlier than my canopy. You can probably see it better in some of my fotki pics than my avi.

If you've just started CG, it could be that you need a bit of a trim. Since your canopy is more exposed, it tends to be more damaged than underneath.

Depending on the texture of your hair, air-drying may be pulling some of the curl out also. I have to get rid of a lot of water to air dry my hair or the excess water pulls out the curl. Pixiecurl diffusing for a few minutes sets the curl. I only dry to about 50% then airdry the rest of the way. By only diffusing for a short period of time, I don't get as much of the weirdness in curl and much less frizz.

A curl enhancer may help also. I don't know what you have access to but KCCC is a popular one that's available at Whole Foods. The Curl Junkie products are amazing and are CG. There's a long thread on the go about them if you haven't already seen it. Think it's in Reader Product Reviews forum. kathymack sells samples and the full sizes are available through CurlMart.

As far as methods go, scrunching, plopping, icequeen conditioner application method and clipping all help with curl enhancement.

I've been CG for almost 2 years and my canopy still isn't as curly as my underneath but it is much closer now than it was in the beginning. Finding the right products for my hair and applying them in the right way is the reason for that. If you haven't already, I would stongly determine your hair's characteristics to help you choose the right products.

Thanks for your reply, whatsercurl! Your hair is gorgeous.

I've been doing CG for about 3 months now, ever since I got the last of my permanently-straightened hair cut off. So I haven't just started, but I'm not a veteran either. My hair has definitely gotten a little curlier over that period of time. It could be that I need another trim by now.

Is KCCC really considered a curl enhancer? I have some and have experimented with it a lot, but I actually find it loosens my curls. This seems to be true whether I use a little or a lot. Maybe it's too heavy for my hair or something, I don't know. I'll look into the Curl Junkie line -- I haven't heard of it before.

I also find that my curls tend to end up tighter when I air-dry than when I diffuse. It's funny because while my hair is air-drying, it looks like it's not going to be that curly at all. But then it shrinks up right at the last moment. I haven't tried the special diffusing methods you mentioned, so maybe I'll experiment with those!

Thank you.

Some people consider KCCC a curl enhancer, some an elongator. I think it depends how much you use. I tried to use it the way everyone else was (mysteryflavour has a video on application) but it was WAY too much product for my hair. I don't use it often as I'm currently having a torrid affair with Curl Junkie but my avi is a KCCC pic. I had to use two scant knuckles raked in on top of GLI with gel on top.

It enhanced my curl a little but what it really did was give me more fullness and consistency. CJ and AfroDetangler really enhance mine though. My hair is full on 3A most of the time now that I've started using those products. Whether those work for you will be largely dependant on your hair texture and porosity.

ETA: I found when my hair was shorter it curled the way you described when air drying. But now that it's longer it really only does that in warm humid weather.

Hey amanda. i have the same issue. a lot of curlies have mentioned styling upside down and applying your products upside down and also rinsing upside down. also, you can try scrunchy while you are still in the shower. i sometimes get the canopy to curl very nicely- especially when using something like Pink Boots. but for me its really a hit or miss- or i just dont have time to diffuse and try 25 things!! IMO, KCCC just imitates what your hair already does and just defines it. if your hair has coily potentials, then they will coil beautifully. if you have longer enlongated curls, your curls will be nice and glossy elongated curls. you could try over night plopping with the KCCC and some BRHG. when my hair was longer (and lacking definition and direction!) this was my best technique! the over night plopping helped A LOT with the canopy curls!

IIRC, I once read that the outside layer of your hair is less curly because it's the most damaged from the environment- sun, pollution, etc.
I really try to protect my hair from the sun by using UV protection spray, wearing a hat, etc. Also, diligence in deep conditioning with a moisturizing product and a protein product (I only use protein every other week).

To enhance that outer layer, try finger curling (the hair needs to be wet). After you apply product, scrunch, plop, etc finger curl small sections of hair all around. Occasionally, I'll even wrap a small section around a makeup brush and gently slide it out. I'm left with a beautiful bouncy curl much like the bottom layers.
Pin curling will give you more definition also.

If I need dry hair, I'll pixie diffuse (where you turn the hair dryer on and off when repositioning).

I've been using the CG method for a couple years now and I'm still experimenting with it.
