1 week in and my hair is a nightmare!

I have been no-poo, strict CG for the past week and my hair looks awful. I know there is a transition period, but I am worried that I am doing something wrong and will never get the beautiful results that I have seen in so many of the pictures here.

I have been using Suave Coconut as my co-wash, Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose as a leave in (but I half wash it out because I am scared of getting greasy), I started out using Herbal Essence Set me up gel but added Kinky Curly Curling Custard about 5 days ago. I am not sure if I am using too much or if my hair just doesn't like it, but my hair looks like a pile of poo on my head. Pre-CG I used Fructis Curl Construct Mousse and John Frieda Frizz Ease and my curls looks ok but not great. I want great!

I have tried scrunching, raking, diffusing, pixie-diffusing plopping, skip curling and pretty much any other method I have read about on this site and all I end up with is a frizzy, undefined mess. Am I being too impatient? Am I overdoing it and should just stick to the basics? Plopping totally made my hair un-curly, my hair seems less curly than before I started CG and I really just want the beautiful curls that everyone here has!

I would appreciate any advice, suggestions, encouragement. I made a commitment to stick with it for a month, so I am not going to quit, but I really want this to work so I have definded, healthy curls. Here are some pics, excuse my face, I feel ick and gross and ugly when my hair is bad.

A couple things to consider: The AOHR conditioner that you are using is WAY heavy (I only know this because I became overconditioned from using it ) Also, since you have medium course hair, the protein that is in the suave coconut could be causing problems.
I have been doing CG for a little over a month and things are getting much better.
I just switched to using the VO5 clarifying conditioner, and my hair feels so much better than with the suave. It is all trial and error, so hang in there.

Hi, I have to say that your hair looks over soft, it isn't that curly either. You have what I call a slow wave at the root (it takes a while to get going) and then it starts to go into pretty large curls, whatever you are using is making the curl less curly because it is heavy. If your hair gets oily ever sometimes conditioner isn't enough. I recomend to my clients with your type of hair the following, and after I will tell you why..
Jessicurl gentle lather shampoo, Aloba conditioner if you need it, and Rocking Ringlets, lots of it to encourage the curl. This is considered CG. Trying to go to CVS and guess what store brand will do for you without any frame of refrence to some kind of standard of good hair day's is madness. Pick one brand, follow that brands instructions for your type of hair for a couple of weeks or a month and then decide. It's just my two cents as a professional, but professional brands are formulated to work together and come with stylist/curly developer guidence and should be much eisier. It's hard enough to give up your old routine, take it easy on yourself.

The AO Honeysuckle Rose is extremely heavy. I second what MMassage said. I don't know of anyone that leaves that in. Its always a rinse out completely, and even some of the driest curlies use it only in the winter. I would find something a step down - AOWC, or at least try rinsing the AOHR completely out. Don't leave that in! heh.
Grand Goobah Caedran, Aqueous Infusion of Demulcents, Order of the Curly Crusaders

Fia 2cFi, fine texture, med porosity CG 5-29-09 * My hair loves protein! Currently using : DermOrganics Shampoo and IHM, G2B Kinkier Mousse, Re:Coil VMM, Anything Spiral Solutions! MO Sealing. Coconut Oil Pre-Poo, once a month Hard Water shampoo. Avoiding Glycerin in finishing products.

Thank you all for the advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond I will stop using the AOHR and pick up some V05 and stick with just the herbal essence gel and see how it goes from there. I know I am impatient and tend to want things right this second! So maybe I need to work in my patience more than my hair

On the plus side, my daughter who is bi-racial and has hair that is much drier and curlier than mine, has responded beautifully to going CG and the products and her hair is gorgeous now, where as before it was very dry and brittle. She loves wearing it in a pineapple all day

Aquagreenbean, it can take a while to find which products are right for you, especially in the beginning. It can take a few weeks just to figure out what your hair texture is--whether it's fine, dense, or porous. All of those things will determine what your hair needs.

It looks to me like you have too much in your hair or what you're using is too heavy. One of the first things I noticed about going CG was that I needed less conditioner and product than I did before. Before going CG I would use a whole palmful of conditioner in the shower (because the sulphates were stripping my hair so badly). Now I use less than half that for detangling and rinsing out. I use KCCC and put gel on top of it, but only put a dime- to a nickel-sized blob of gel over it (depending on which gel I use). If I use more my hair gets heavy and feels and looks too product-y.

The first 6-8 weeks of CG are all trial and error. There's a learning curve with the products and it's good to try different things to see how your hair reacts.

Also, I don't know how often you were washing yoru hair before you started CG. That can have an impact on how long your adjustment period is. If you were washing with a sulphate shampoo every day or every other day, your scalp may be creating more oil than it needs to now that you're no longer using sulphate shampoo. If that's the case, it can take 6 weeks for your scalp to adjust to the fact that it isn't being over-stripped anymore. Until that happens, your hair will likely feel greasy and will be heavier than it should.

I'm sure I'm missing something because I'm not nearly the expert some of the others are.

Hang in there!

I agree with the AOHR being to heavy to use all of the time. I can use the AO conditioners (I don't care for the AOHR as much as the others) twice a week in winter and not at all in the summer. It takes a while to find "your" products. My hair didn't care for the Jessicurl products, either. Left it limp and lifeless after a week--and I didn't use the Deep Treatment or Oil (bought the whole system.) Unfortunately, it's a lot of trial and error. Try to find someone with hair like yours and "stalk" them on the boards. Look at the signature for products and see what they "talk" about doing with their hair.

What a difference a week and some BRHG makes! I stopped using the AOHR and Suave Coconut and switched to V05 Clarifying condish for my co-wash and GVP Condishining Balm for my rinse out. Products I am still trying to find what works and what doesn't.

I am still only about 3 weeks CG and still have not found the right combo of products, so hopefully it will only keep getting better. Also I am in desperate need of a cut which hopefully will help a lot too. But even still, look at what a huge difference from 2 weeks ago!

Your hair looks a lot better now. I use the V05 Clarifying for co-wash too and it seems to work well. My first week in my hair looked similar to yours but after a month in so far it looks and FEELS so soft. Half the times I can't keep m hands out of my hair... I can't remember it ever feeling this soft and healthy.

Glad to see you hung in and I'm sure you will find the right products soon.

Your hair looks sooooo much better! Keep hanging in there. Try not to make too many changes at once. Changing too many things at one time will drive you batty when something isn't working and you have NO idea what product is affecting you!

Okay, if you've REALLY tried everything you've listed in the last week, you've not given any of it a chance to work!

Slow and steady. One thing at a time so you can determine what's working and what isn't. The adjustment period took me a month easily. You and your hair need time to get properly moisturized and adjusted to all this new stuff!

CG is a LOT of trial and error. The following are just my thoughts - try what you feel like trying and chuck the rest. I'd cut the AOHR like others have said. A lot of people like Generic Value Products Conditioning Balm from Sally's instead, especially this time of year. Suave Coconut has amino acids, which act like protein. Some hair really doesn't like it, so you might try the Waterfall Mist type, which I know doesn't have protein (I'm sure there are others, but that's the one I use). You might need a leave-in... I love Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholesterol, which is cheap at Sally's, so it might be worth a try. You probably need to investigate dew point and humectants as well... I can't tollerate glycerin some days due to the dryness around here, but if the dew point gets above 40, I can expect frizz without it!

Good luck, hope I helped!

Wow, congrats! That's such a GREAT difference you must be really pleased
I think before that you must have been OC from the AOHR, I personally use it, but a lot of people's hair cannot cope with it every day.
Getting the perfect hair you want with CG is all about patience and trial and error - I'm only just getting what I want from my hair, so you're lucky to get that so fast, congrats
