Default something that helps me clip

Clipping is a major problem for me because the clips just slide off, maybe because my hair is thin. I discovered today that if I clipped and then diffused the clipped part for just about 3 mins. the hair swelled a bit and I could readjust the clips and they stood up in place. Might lead to frizz - hopefully not because the hair is still very damp but at least I got some height. Also, I put a tiny bit of gel on the clips before I stuck them back in and that helped too.

I've also let my hair air dry or even diffused for about 10 minutes before clipping. I found that if my hair isn't so wet, it gets root lift a lot better that way than trying to fool with wet, limp hair.

Great, CCR. This is the first time I tried this and from what you are saying, it will work in the future. Hopefully others who are having difficulty clipping will find this helpful.

I always diffuse for about 5 minutes before clipping. That gets the curls going for me and provides some texture for the clips to hang onto.

I use the duck billed clips, the kind they use in salons. I bought them at Harmon but have seen them in beauty supply stores.

I am using the orindary basic clips that are two pieces but joined near the end - not sure I am describing that well. They are the ones that are used to make pincurls or hold magnetic or wire rollers in place. They are the most common type - any Duane Reade, CVS or Rite Aid carries them. I think Goody makes them and probably others too.

When I do clip I always diffuse for a few minutes or air dry for 10-15 minutes before clipping. I use these clips from Sally's (no cross bar to catch on hair) and follow this method of clipping from the Curl Love blog. HTH!!

Oh - I'm going to buy these without the cross bar! That's what probably has been catching on my hair. ITA - good tip!

Thanks so much for posting up the type of clips you are using, SusieQ - and the note about the cross bar! These little tips make such a difference when trying to find products/accessories. I'm in UK so can't use the website listed but found the same thing on ebay here for all the UK curlies:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SIBEL-DOUBLE-P...d=p3286.c0.m14

Very long url - sorry.

I like the ones without the crossbar much better if I'm using the short double-prong clips, but the hinges on those and any others tend to get caught as I'm removing them - be very careful or they can cause breakage

Another good tip! Thanks auntnett! I'm using little jaw clips at the moment and my hair gets caught in the 'teeth' of those! I would love to try these:

I've got them from Germany (I believe the shipping was 9.50 ). I use them a lot and so far I'm really pleased with them. I think it's the only place in Europe that sells them.

I know they were out of stock when I wanted to order themI hate that.

If you click on "order" you can then select the possibility to be notified when they are back in stock. Or try and contact Faith, the owner she is really helpful (and English speaking). I don't think I had to wait that long, but I can't remember exactly how long.
I use them a lot and really like them.

I have them, have tried them every which way, and don't particularly care for them, LOL. I get a lot better results with just duckbill clips or small butterfly/jaw clips (all below). I have fairly fine hair and though the bottom length is almost shoulderblade length, my layers are still too short - maybe the clamps will work better for others with longer and/or different textured hair.

These clamps give me weird bunchy-looking (but I don't mean clumpy) hair with undesirable gaps/splits because they gather up too wide an area of hair and pull it up too tightly (no matter how much or how little I try to gather up), pulling the roots too straight, making the top, especially, too flat, and they mess up my overall definition, formation and clumping - This is no matter how few or how many I use (I have a dozen) or whether I use them on wet, damp, or dry hair. I've had the best results when used on slightly dampened hair on day 2 and just used 3-4 on the top.

The plain, lightweight plastic clamps that come 12/$1 at Sally's and other beauty supply stores work more like these seem like they should but without reaching out and grabbing so much hair into the bunch - they're more controllable.

If I use the R2D2 dryer, my head won't fit under it if I have more than 2-3 CHS clamps on my head. I do, however, sometimes accordion the length up and clip the bottom up with 4 to get it up under the helmet once it's partially dry.

These from Sally's are similar but might not be as "grabby" with the smaller teeth and, so, might work better - 10/$5.99 ($4.99 w/Sally's card). They're actually intended to be roller clamps. The CHS clamps could probably be used for that purpose, too.

Usually Id diffuse till my hair is about 85% dry and then I use the CHS jaw clamps on the back/top of my head (starting in the middle with the crown) and then the sides (also on the back). For this I use 4-6 jaw clamps.

For the top of my head where my hair separates I use 4-6 small jaw clamps or ordinary, short hair clips its easier to get to the root with them.

It takes a bit of practice to find out whats best for you, but its fun. Sometimes I dont lift sections of my hair with my fingers but I grab my hair carefully with the clamps (they open really wide) and I try to grab as much as possible and lift it without squashing it.

I have really fine hair (but lots of it) and my hair at the top/back of my head tends to lose volume without using them. I use them every day.
Sometimes I use them on the top of my head as well, usually later after styling or if I got caught in the rain.

I would also use them to lift my hair later during the day and for 2nd day hair. I was afraid they would start breaking after some time, so I ordered two sets. But Ive used them for about three months now without any problem.

Hope it makes sense English is not my first language.
Fingers crossed you'll get them soon
