Haircut Tomorrow! Advice Please!

So I finally bit the bullet and made an appointment for a haircut. I'm going to get a curly girl cut from Callie at Toujours Salon tomorrow. I suspect she may actually want to cut my hair wet though, since it's more wavy than curly right now (it's reaallly long).

My appointment is tomorrow (Sunday) at 3 pm central time. Any advice about what to do? I'm thinking of getting about 6 inches off, sideswept bangs (sort of like I have now) and long layering.

Here's the shortest it's been in recent time (my last haircut, about 5 years ago.) I've been trimming it myself since. Note the slight pyramid head effect. I can't get much volume on top ever, but I think back then I was still working on my hair products/routine too:

These two were taken about a week ago:

Lots more photos in my album.

I want a more manageable length in general, and especially for the summer. It's around waist length now, and tends to tangle more and get in my way (plus it takes a long time to dry and to detangle.) But I'm afraid to go too short. I also want to be able to pull it back in a ponytail (most of it anyway).

Any advice is welcome! TIA!

I think some length and more layers would definitely help to give you more volume. I would go for some bangs if you think you wouldn't mind managing them!

Its always so exciting to go in for a cut with someone who knows what they are doing

Well, first off, your hair is freakin' gorgeous! I love those botticelli curls and the shine.

I wonder if the length were cut to about the end of your t-shirt sleeve, give or take an inch, it would be more manageable in the way describe? She shouldn't cut it straight across, obviously, but rather, tapered to avoid the dread pyramid-ism.

Also, I really believe it's obviously curly, rather than wavy hair. if the stylist can't see that, I'd be concerned.

I like you without bangs. If "out of your face" is a goal, skip 'em.

HTH! You have wonderful hair --- please don't change it much!

i think i would take off more than 6 inches, maybe go to shoulder blade length? i agree, i think your hair is curly rather than wavy. make sure she sees that.
and i also vote for no bangs. however, she should put in 'pieces' or layers so there is no pyramid effect, and that will give you volume and you won't need bangs.
good luck!
post some photos after the cut.

Good news--it went great! So far, I really like the cut Callie gave me. The true test will be when I wash it and style it myself; I know I won't get quite the same results, because I never do.

I went with pretty much my original plan of about 6 inches off and long layers. I would say it would fall to about mid-sleeve, if it doesn't spring up as much when I style it (as I suspect.)

She kept checking in with me whether it was the length I wanted and even mentioned that the layers could go shorter, if I wanted (I left it as is).

In case anyone else plans to go to Callie at Toujours in Chicago, and wants to know how to arrive: they told me to wash my hair and use my usual stylers but not to clip it or use ponytail holders.

After the dry cut, she did wash it with Deva no poo and use One C. She used Deva Angell and raked it in (I almost never rake it, I usually smooth products in, but I might try this in the future). Then she diffused it upside down and did some more fine tuning. I'm surprised it didn't take longer to get reasonably dry, but I'm sure aside from being shorter, their dryer has more wattage than mine.

If anyone sees this late and still wants to give me some advice about hair styles/cuts, feel free--I can use it for next time! Now I just have to figure out when I should return, since I didn't ask.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

I'll post pics soon.

I FLIPPED when I saw your hair from behind. CLONE OF ME two years ago. I turned the computer around and showed my husband and he said, "if you didn't say anything, I would've through it was yours.

Scary.

Anyway.....it took me a long time to find the right combo to make my hair happy..it was MORE than the cut...2.5 year process (unless you count my whole lifetime! LOL). I think I am going to post about this...

Yes, pictures!
As promised. The stylist used Deva products (including Angell) and also a volumizing powder spray from Bumble and Bumble. I kind of doubt that's CG.

I think the style will come out quite different when I do it myself and use my products and methods. Oh, did I mention I told her all about Jessicurl's products, and directed her to the web site?

What do you think of the effect from the raking? I think it will give me more volume, but I like the clumping effect I get by smoothing products in (more ringlets I think).

Also, I think I can get better second-day hair with my old routine (although I know it will need adjusting).

More photos in my album.

Oh..the curl is awesome!!! I am curious, though, why was your hair cut in the back to form a 'V' type of thing rather than be taken straight across? Does that make sense? The bottom of it goes to a point rather than being straight across. I, personally, think if it were taken straight across (even in the back), it would give you a MUCH FULLER look! But, that is just me!!

Curl is looking great!

I agree - that would make it look fuller, but hey, maybe that's not what she wants. Idk.

Your hair looks absolutely great though, such an improvement. It looks really healthy and shiny and the curls look awesime

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

I tried to post this before and my computer imploded (not literally, but I lost the message).

I'm not sure what was up with the V shape in the back, but I've had it before and liked it fine. I like my hair to be shorter in front (particularly the face framing part of course), so it works ok. I didn't request it and I did mention I wanted volume.

I'm contemplating getting it even shorter... but probably not till next summer. I feel naked and cold in the winter if it's too short The shortest I would go is as I had it before, about shoulder length.

Criska, usually healthy people's hair grows around a half inch or a bit less each month. Unfortunately, many stylists encourage people to get their hair trimmed so often that it makes it hard to grow long (not to mention sometimes they cut off more than you want!) If you're getting enough protein and other nutrients, yours should grow at a similar rate.

PrettyMedusa: Also, apparently some people's hair will never grow that long. Each hair has a certain length it will grow, and that's it. So you might be one of those unique people whose hair only grows so long. I guess we can chalk that up to Mother Nature.

Anyone have any advice about when to get a trim to keep this style/shape? I can't go too often though, if I get a Curly Girl cut, because it is rather expensive ($75).
