Ah, yes...one of my favorite common curly "compliments" ever...
Me: (running to the beach, stopping at Rite Aid, NO product in my hair at all)
Woman behind me on line: (touches my hair slightly) You have such BEAUTIFUL curly hair!
Me: Thank you!
Woman: Betcha HATE it!
Hmmmmmmmm...

LOL! That's priceless. I guess we can assume that she either thinks it's hard to maintain or that it's so different from the standard straight-haired look that you have trouble accepting it. Either way, she's wrong!
On the basis of what I see in your avatar, though, she was right about it being beautiful!

LOL, talk about a left handed compliment! She may just have known a lot of women who always bemoaned theirs because they didn't know how to care for it - unlike you, obviously. Yours is gorgeous!

Aww I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it. The way I took it was she was just making a comment on the old standard that people with straight hair always want curly hair and people with curly hair always want straight hair.
I'm sure she meant something like people always want what they don't have no matter how great what they have is. And what you have is pretty great so the likelihood of you not liking it is probably pretty high. I don't think she was trying to be insulting at all.

I don't think she meant it offensively. I remember when people used to compliment my hair and say "I wish I had such pretty curls," I'd say sarcastically, "No, you don't." For better or worse, lots of women who have curly hair detest it, and I think that self-hatred is generally detected by other people. There's also this conception of curls being harder to maintain and deal with, so perhaps she was also referring to the labor-intensive nature of curls (which, to me, is actually pretty low-maintenance--I wash, I style, I'm on my way).

I definitely think this is what she meant since it seems to be true in a lot of cases.

For some reason I keep hearing that recently too. All I can think is that for so many people to be saying that, they must have seen or heard it in the mass media.
They all seem to be disappointed to learn that I don't hate it now that I have a clue what to do with it.

ITA, that's exactly how I took what she said to mean.
My sister, when seeing my hair curly for the first time ever (10 days ago) said, " WHY did you straighten it all these years???!!!! Gah!!" LOL. I told her it was because I had no clue what to do with it.

I get it all the time -- "where'd you get your perm?" "Your hair can't be natural", me- yes it is -- "are you sure?" Yep I am really sure, no perms, let it dry and hope for the best. "Oh, you are so lucky" -- me -- some days, thanks!!!
