Default Combing product through wet hair?

I'm tempted to try this, because I have fine hair that tends to clump and leave all these weird bald spots and bumps on my head. I'm just a little worried because I'm wondering if combing product through my hair, from the roots to the ends, and creating a part with my comb will make it frizzy or less curly. Anybody have any thoughts?

I do it every day. You just have to scrunch when you're done combing. It works beautifully!

Sydney, do you use clips at all or have any problems with volume when you do this?

No, I kind of suck at clips. lol, I've tried and I end up looking like a camel on top of my head. After I scrunch and I mean REALLY scrunch, I plop for 5mins or so and then scrunch AGAIN with a flour sack towel. Then, I diffuse (upside down, side to side, straight up) for a good 15-20mins. I get all the volume I'll get from doing that. I don't think the combing affects it.

I comb thru and then scrunch and then I go about my business.

I comb/rake through and than scrunch too. If I just scrunch it looks weird and doesn't fall right. Although, I scrunched only yesterday since I was staying home and my hair looked great. I am going to try again... maybe now it has gotten accustomed to fall a certain way that actually looks good. I'm going to try again tonight. Oh, I think I do have a little more volume when I scrunch but I can't be too sure since yesterday could have been a fluke.

Thanks for the tips! I'll try this tomorrow. I always have to diffuse for 5-10 minutes before work; otherwise, it takes me hours and hours to dry! When I had longer hair and tried combing, I found that I tended to be frizzier and less voluminous, but perhaps that's because I didn't scrunch afterwards to "activate" the curl! Do you usually scrunch upside down?

I'm a wild scruncher. Basically, I have a pretty "weak" curl pattern. When I comb through my products, my hair looks dead straight. It's also pretty much stuck to my head. So before scrunching, I gently break it up by running my hands through my hair, all the way to the scalp. This helps with root curl and volume, I think. I also try to make sure this last raking makes for even clumps. At this point I can pretty much do whatever I want with my hair, because, like I said, it looks straight and not at all how it will end up. So once I have it sufficiently separated from the combing process, I scrunch first standing straight up to re-curl. This brings out the spirals again. Then, once, I have the basic spirals I go crazy - upside-down, side to side, diagonal, you name it. Basically I'm trying to get the curl to go from root to tip. This kind of "sets" my pattern. Then I plop, take down the plop, and RESCRUNCH doing the same motions, but with a floursack towel. This again sets the curl AND takes out a ton of moisture.

Wow, I didn't know scrunching could be so involved.

I have curls that are actually quite similar to yours, from looking at your photos; I wouldn't say my curl pattern is weak, though my curls do tend to stick to my head. But your hair looks awesome, so I figure that imitating your routine wouldn't hurt.

lol, let me know how it goes. I've seen some people say that scrunching too much breaks up their curls, but I try to be really deliberate. I'll try to describe it: I open my hand up, let some of the spirals touch my palm, gently close my fingers slightly and then push all the way up to my scalp. I never move the hair anywhere but straight up towards the scalp.

I am wild and crazy scruncher too! My hair is just SydneyCurls after combing - anyone not knowing my hair would assume it was straight. But I am going to try SydneyCurls method of running your hands through it after the combing-do you start at the scalp? I have such an issue with my hair 'sticking' to my scalp. I also do the scrunching with the my curlease - at that point I think it helps with not creating any frizz and setting the curl.

I have also used the fine comb/wide comb method and that gives me a bit more controlled clumping. You use a finer toothed comb first and then a wide toothed comb (like you would use to comb your conditioner through in the shower). Then you scrunch-the wider toothed comb helps define the size of the clumping.

To the bold Q, yup, I start at the scalp and run my hands all the way through the length. Almost like..hm..like if your hair was straightened and you had sunglasses or a headband over your hair, then you took the sunglasses/headband off and ran your fingers through it to loosen it up the hair again.

Got it. It worked well this a.m. - it takes the place of the narrow/wide toothed routine I was doing.

Thanks, Sydney. I used your method of combing/running my hands through my hair/scrunching this morning and am super impressed with the results. No frizz, good amount of volume, nicely shaped curls...and the kicker...my hair doesn't look "messy"! I always hated walking out of the house with semi-wet hair because of the weird way it used to fall (i.e., bumps I couldn't get rid of, a crazy lopsided part, bald spots). Today my clumps are gorgeous and very well put together. I think we've discovered a new method to put up there with the rest of 'em!

Default why not me

I find that scrunching gives me more frizz. I comb like you all after I put my gel in (no leave in) and that helps separate, and I 'm ok there, but then if I go to scrunch to reactivate curls, I get frizz. Any tips so that I can scrunch AND not get frizz???

Default flour sack towels

mamaherrera - try scrunching with a flour sack towel instead of your bare hands. I always comb my product through my hair, then loosen my hair by bending over and gently shaking my hair and using my fingers to gently agitate at the roots. I then use a flour sack towel or two and really scrunch which sets my curl pattern and helps with drying time.
