KY-Jelly?

ok so I was gonna try the KY on my curls but I got to the store and there were many different kinds.Do I need the KY gel-- the stuff in the tube? or the KY silk ( this is the liqiud stuff that looks like it could be a hair product?)

Im confused so can someone tell me which kind is to be used?

TIA

I use the original gel. :) KY is basically an easy source for glycerin, and it's very similar to Curl Keeper (or so I'm told). HTH!

KY? NO sh1t! Now I've heard everything! Haha, well I guess it's not as bad as bull semen, right? :laughing5: I'm guessing you use the original jelly formula?

I know, right?! This was my same reaction when I first read it! LOL

Thanks for the info. About how much should I use? my hair is almost touching my shoulders and is pretty thick...

You can see my hair length in my avatar (it's just a little longer now). I use 4 quarter sized blobs on my hair. I think I could probably use more, but I also use AVG, and I think my hair would just get a little over saturated with product if I increased the amount. Sometimes I water down the KY too (about 50/50), but lately I've been short on time, so I just scrunch it in full strength.

FYI- you can get the generic Walmart brand for less than $2. I've used the KY brand (~$6?), the Walgreens generic brand (~$4), and the Walmart generic brand (~$2) with the same results. When I saw how inexpensive it was, I just went ahead and purchased 4 or 5 tubes...that was an entertaining checkout!

I've posted this before but I swear by Walmart's Equate equivalent -- I dilute 50:50 w/water and put it either in a spray bottle or puddle it in -- let it sit for a few minutes, blot with Curl Ease then add your fav styling products. Works wonders in the FL humidity!

Like I said earlier, I am coming off of a CG relapse, and am back in the routine. (with amazing results, I might add-what was I thinking??) Last summer when I heard everything about the KY I thought it was the craziest thing I had ever heard of. But....... I got the jelly kind, but Target brand, the other day. I have had AMAZING results. Clumping, no frizz, amazing curls. I am a convert.

bettinfla 07-22-2009 01:45 PM

Just bought 4 oz Equate at Walmart today $1.87 and it dilutes to 8 oz -- and lasts me a couple months using it every other day or so. Can't beat that bargain!

Ingredients:Purifed Water, Glycerin, Hydrozyethylcellulose, Chlorhexidine Gluconate, Glucono Delta Lactone, Methylparaben, sodium Hydroxide.

Maybe for comparison someone could post CK ingredients or post where to find them.

I've been seeing all this talk about KY Jelly and thought it was crazy. My aunt is coming from LA this week, so I'm gonna ask her to bring back som Equate (Haha I'd better make it clear why!!) cause KY Jelly is expensive in the UK.
I'm excited to try it! How do you recommend using it?

anatidaephobia 07-22-2009 02:54 PM

Per CurlMart, these are the ingredients for CK:

Ingredients: DI Water, PVP/VA Copolymer, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Laureth 23, Glycerin, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Polyquaternium 10.

bettinfla 07-22-2009 03:00 PM

I guess it's pretty close although if the ingredients are listed in order of strength Equate has Glycerin 2nd, so maybe there is more glycerin in Equate than CK but I don't know what the diff in performance is because I have never tried CK.

I dilute 4 oz Equate (squeeze the tube til empty) w/4 oz water -- shake it up good and apply it in puddles on each side, back and top. I have also diluted that mixture down and put some leave in either KCKT or any conditioner and some more water and used it as a refresher spray in the morning. Works great......

I use the Equate Wal Mart version too. I've also used the real thing. Can't tell the difference when it's in your hair. this stuff really does work well.

I'm gonna have to try this. I'm going shopping for stuff for my trip, so will have to pick this up too. My only concern is the Sodium Hydroxide. My hair hates ionicly charged products (ie: sodium, polyquaternium), but I'll give it a try.

I just e-mailed my aunt and asked her to bring some over - I did explain what it was for though lol.
So how would this slot into my routine?
Would this be after a leave in and before a curl creme/gel?

That's when I do it, but I've heard of people layering it on top of the gel/curl cream.

Thanks - I think I will use it that way. I'm so excited to get mine now haha... Excited over personal lube.. How sad is that?! :laughing6:

ROFLOL!

i wonder what would get you the most strange looks, 1-letting them wonder what you would be doing to use that much (if using it for what it is designed for)
or 2-telling them its for your hair!

only a curly could understand!

ellageorgina 07-24-2009 01:40 AM

Haha well it's a little disturbing that my aunt didn't even bat an eyelash when I said it was my hair, I guess she just knows that's normal behaviour for me... Lol. :compress:

Yeah I was actually really entertained by all the odd looks, but I guess that's just my strange (curly minded if you will) sense of humor!
