Help with stringy hair...what am I doing wrong?

I have been following what you probably call a modified CG since I do use shampoo bars from kathymac. I use the bars every 2 or 3 days, and on the other days water-wash, then rinse with a conditioner. I have fine, short hair. Probably 3A in curls, and from what I can determine to be normal porosity.

I am trying to grow my hair out, and is just now growing down half way over my ears.

So, far I've had pretty good luck with letting my curls come out...but, the last couple days my hair has gotten kind of stringy with poor curl formation. Up till now the curls have been pretty good.

Here is what I did yesterday and today. Yesterday I tried blotting out water in my hair before applying KCCC then Aquage Megagel. Blotting out the water was a big no-no and my hair was so stringy when it dried I rewet it and applyed gel again. After drying..wasn't as bad, but wasn't great.

Today...I applyed KCCC with my hair soaking wet in the shower. Then, blotted dry with old tshirt and applyed the same gel. Again...my hair is just kind of stringy and bordering on frizzy.

The conditioners I'm using are Kenra, CJ Moisture Theory, GVP Balm. I am not using a leave-in right now with the summer dew points. Perhaps I should be?

I'm open to any advice.

Thanks, Jodi
So far just experimenting with anything and everything!!!!
that was happening to me. i actually had bad hair for over a week. i finally decided to get a protein treatment in there to see if it helped. i used the GVP joico k pack and it helped TREMENDOUSLY.

I agree with burgundy! I was having the same problem and immediately noticed a big difference (bigger, thicker, clumpier, spiral curls instead of squiggly strings!) after switching to a high protein conditioner. My hair is fine too.

Burgundy: I noticed you are experimenting with Lustrasilk Olive Oli. I just bought some of this at my local Dollar Store for next to nothing after reading on here all the positive posts. What are you doing as far as your experimenting goes?

I just used it last night. I used a low-poo and then finger combed a ton of this through my hair. I didn't shampoo out until this morning. I noticed that the last 4 inches or so of my hair when I got up was very soft, had pretty decent curl definition for sleeping on it all night, a was pretty much frizz-free. However, the remainder of my hair was very producty-feeling.

So, I again used my low-poo shampoo and then applied my condish (both Giovanni Smooth As Silk products). My hair felt absolutely amazing (like it use to feel a few months ago), very silky and tangle-free, when I was finished. I applied a very small amount of Giovanni Direct Leave-In to the last 4 inches of hair, no curl creme this time, and then applied my HESMU (Herbal Essence Set Me Up) gel. I let it air dry as long as I could and then diffused the rest upside down. My hair was extremely shiny (I couldn't believe it). But my hair soon became stringy, frizzy and dry. As a matter of fact, my hair has been like this for a couple of months. Nothing I use seems to help. I've been experimenting to no avail. I thought I was protein-sensitive. But, now I think my hair is craving protein. So, I'm going to completely change up my routine once again.

How do you know if you are protein sensitive or actually crave protein? My hair is medium texture, good elasticity, normal porosity. Anyone?

i'm not sure if i am protein sensitive. but since i am coarse, low porosity, normal elasticity, i should not over do it on the protein. but since nothing was working- deep treatments, GVP conditioning balm, ACV rinses, my last result was the protein. i normally low poo with devacurl low poo or soap bars and i do that like, once a week, or once every 10 days, and i co wash in between when necessary.

a lot of curlies that are protein sensitive say their hair 'craves' protein when it starts feeling stringy. since my hair isnt fine, my hair does not feel stringy. i just figured i needed it cause nothing else helped!!! the frizziness was a major concern for me since my hair has frizz when wet, but usually dries to no frizz. the excess of frizz and just the lack of definition might be the clue for me. just try it. one protein wash wont make cause a negative impact- or so i wouldnt think!

hit me up if you have any other questions. i'm not a hair guru, but i think im at least getting the hang of my hair!

Thanks for the quick response Burgundy. I'm just at my wits end with my hair over the past several weeks (mainly since the beginning of summer).

I recently bought several products recommended on this board: AOHR cond & poo (hasn't arrived yet), GVP conditioning balm, Bioterra Curl Creme. I just threw out my Suave Coconut Condish. I started using this late in the spring and thought maybe this was adding to my hair problems. I bought Suave Tangerine Condish since I had good results with this back in the fall and winter. I co-wash everyday and usually low-poo every 3rd or 4th day. I can never get second day hair without co-washing or low-pooing.

I also do the ACV rinse every 3 weeks or so. This winter and early spring I had great results with this but not so much now.

So, when I'm close to Sally's Beauty, I'm going to pick up the protein pack that is mentioned on here and give it a try. I don't want to give up my curly girl routine but sometimes it is pretty frustrating experimenting trying to get it just right.

Thanks for all your help!

Thanks, everyone...I will use the Emergencee protein treatment I have. I used it about a week ago, but my hair must be needing it. I hope that is the problem anyway...it looks really bad!

Add all your products to soaking wet hair and then scrunch in as much curl as you can before blotting out the water. I actually scrunch out the water with a couple of flour sack towels.
