What do you mean by "how do you co-wash?" co-wash is washing your hair with conditioner, after applying conditioner rub your scalp with your finger tips not nails to remove dirt, let conditioner sit then rinse. Its like using your conditioner as shampoo and eliminating shampoo all together.

Thanks!
Wow...I have to read that a few times to make sure I get it. It works for type 4 hair right?

I would think that it would work well for the type 4s. I'm a 3b, and I haven't used shampoo in over a year.

I know PLENTY of people with type 4 hair (many are in my own family) that SWEAR by the conditioner only (co-wash) method. Type 4 hair is the hair that seems to need the MOST moisture because it's especially prone to dryness and breakage. It can be extremely dry and brittle if not cared for properly.
The sulfates in shampoos strip the hair from all the natural oils. That's really the last thing type 4 hair needs hence why so many type 4's actually opt for the Co-Wash method.
Some silicone free Conditioners to co-wash you may like from the drug store are Suave Naturals, Giovanni, bioInfusion Organics, Alberto V05, and Burts Bees. You can get those at Target, WalMart, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and some Dollar Stores sell the Suave Naturals and V05.
A lot of type 4 people love the Suave Naturals and Alberto V05 because neither contain silicones or sulfates PLUS they are BOTH dirt cheap. And best of all.. they REALLY DO WORK. You can get them just about at any drugstore for 99 cent, 1 dollar, or the big bottles for 1.79 or 1.99. Sometimes stores have sales on them and they are all like 79 or 89 cents!!!
I have thick 3c hair and Co-washes work like a charm for me! I Co-Wash 3-4 times a week..sometimes 5. But I do wash with a sulfate free shampoo twice a month.
Best wishes with your co-washes if you decide to try it out!!!

I'm gonna definitely try it asap!
The only thing which confused me is this: She said not to use certain products after the co-wash.
Right now I use 2 things:
1) Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioner
Ingredients: Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Glycine Soja Oil (Soybean), Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium 37, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, PPG 1 Trideceth 6, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Stearalkonium Chloride, Trimethylsilylamodimethicone, Panthenol, PPG 1 PPG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, Lanolin Oil, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Acrylamidopropyltrimonium Chloride/Acrylamide Copolymer, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Benzophenone 3, BHA, BHT, Zea Mays Oil (Corn), Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, DMDM Hydantoin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance
2) Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream:
Ingredients: Aqua Water , Propylene Glycol , Glycerin , Cetearyl Alcohol , PEG-100 Stearate , Glyceryl Stearate , Dimethicone (eep!), Yellow 5 CI 19140 , Blue 1 CI 42090 , Sodium Methylparaben , Hydroxypropyl Guar , PEG-150 , Pentaerithrityl Tetrastearate , PEG-90M , PEG-192 Apricot Kernel Glycerides , PEG-70 Mango Glycerides , Chlorheexidine Dihydrochloride Limonene , Linalool , Citrus Limonum Lemon Extract , Hexyl Cinnamal , Amyl Cinnamal , Parfum Fragrance
I can see the Garnier is not OK, but is the Cantu OK?
Maybe I should just try something from her recommended list...sigh.

I believe so. There are plenty of no-poo types on the 4a boards. Most of my products and routine came from the 4 boards as well.

When I first started, I only had Suave Ocean Breeze or something like that. That's all I used until I gathered enough information to know what was "safe" and what wasn't. Mostly, I look to this board to know what I can or can't use by looking to see what others are using. Everything in my siggie is safe.
One thing...you have to do a final shampoo using a sulfate shampoo before you start in order to get any remaining cones and things out of your hair. And, make sure the shampoo you use does not contain any cones. I'm sure there are some listed somewhere that you can use for the final shampoo. I used a prescription one I had, so I'm not sure what can be used. Someone here must know what you can use.

Also, you may want to be a wary of the polyquat. They also cause build-up.

Thanks I didn't know that can cause build up.Can co-washes get rid of fatty alcohols( example cetearyl alcohol) from the hair?. I heard that fatty alcohols aren't water soluble.

I co-wash with garnier fructis body boast conditioner.I would put allot of conditioner on very wet hair then I would rub my scalp, braid my hair in 4 sections, and rinse with cool water after I finish taking a bath. Before I used suave natural conditioner as a co-wash.Sometimes I wash my hair with organic surge shampoo (low poo) because my scalp gets very dirty from the hair products .My hair routine is going to change again because I want to make my own hair products........

Gosh...I am ashamed to say I tried it with Dove and it didn't work out too well...
I don't want to give up. Maybe I did something wrong, but I couldn't get the comb through my hair afterwards.

Hmm, you co-washed with Dove? I haven't heard that it's CG. Did you shampoo with it and use another conditioner, or did you just try co-washing with it? Your conditioner wash can't have silicones in it either. Plus, more moisture is probably needed. I co-wash with a lighter conditioner (sometimes) and use a rinse out conditioner that is a heavier one. I also use a regular conditioner as a leave-in.

I just looked at the dove condish last night.
Cones definitely. Maybe a polyquat and a quat (too many bottles I looked at).
Uhura, if you do a search you could research this yourself instead having to wait for responses. HTH!!!
