Default How your hair responds to mineral oil?

In the discussions about protein treatments, some can use the K-Pak despite the mineral oil. I'm wondering if texture is the issue?

Let's see if I can set up a poll, LOL. Messed it up the first time because I wanted to change up what I was doing and it posted it. I still didn't get it quite right, but we'll see what happens, LOL!

My hair is fine textured and low porosity. Mineral oil is a problem for me. It's hard to remove and makes it dry and producty at the same time.

Thought I answered before you added the poll, but either I didn't save it or it got lost while you were working on it . . . . Neither my hair nor I usually like mineral oil at all, but the apparently small amount in GVP K-pak never caused me a problem when I was using it. I only used it a few times, though, before moving on to Nexxus Emergencee and then on to AO GPB, neither of which have it.

I put No. I've used a K-Pak a few times with no issues at all. Even before soap bars.

Oh and I'm fine and medium porosity but you already know that.

I started to set it up with just texture--with a yes/no. It would probably have given better data, but I thought I should put in porosity. The three of us have fine hair--and it's mixed results already. We'll have to see how it goes.

I have medium texture & porosity. I cannot use mineral oil. My hair hates it. I cannot too much of any oil without problems but mineral oil seems to be the worst of all the oils I have used. I get very dry, frizzy, greasy, etc.

I've not tried the K-Pak, but I've used various products with mineral oil with interesting results. Seems that a single application of a product with a relatively low amount of it is not a problem - I can even get away with two or three applications. If a product is *mostly* mineral oil, then we have problems. For example, I was using a conditioner these past couple days with a little mineral oil in it. My hair seemed fine - not producty or unruly - but then I wasn't going curly due to scheduling issues, so don't know how it would have changed my curls. I lo-pooed this morning, then used CG products without any problem ingredients, and was fine. About a month ago, however, I tried using a conditioner with LOADS of mineral oil in it for just two days, and it took a good week to get it all out, despite lo-pooing every day.

I've got fine to medium hair, and high to medium porosity.

Ick, yes. Mineral oil seems to make my hair flat and greasy when I have used it in anti-frizz creams. Although, I haven't used it since I was pre-mod-CG. I don't like to use it in cosmetics let alone hair. To each his own, though. If you like it, go for it.

Also, I don't know my hair's porosity level. It soaks up water quickly and takes a long time to dry. It's not very soft in texture and often gets ruffled cuticles (hence I get brittle, dry hair with a few hairs that have a crazy bumpy/rough feel). That's why I voted medium and coarse.

I've use K-Pak about twice a month at most. I'm wary of the mineral oil but so far so good.

Incidentally, I use mineral oil to clean my brushes (oil paint) so I associate it with a chore that I don't much enjoy.

I chose no, coarse, high.

For more specificity.

I'm medium-coarse, porous, and can handle it in my protein treatment.

I'm not sure if I could use it daily or anything like that.

I do use Kinky Curly shampoo once or twice a month, so that may help too.

That poll is pretty jacked up!

[But it's so not kathymack's fault. Polls here are hard, not remotely user friendly.]

Anyway I voted yes, and this was a recent discovery. I was using the Sally's K-Pak knock-off and it really messed up my hair. Now I'm using Nexxus Emergencee instead.

My hair is fine, high porosity.

I've used the GVP k pak three times now and haven't noticed any issues with it. In fact it looks better now than any time since I've started CG. I'm not positive on my hair but I'm pretty sure it's fine and medium porosity.

I hope the GVP K-Pak knock-off works for people. But just a head's up that I used it for months before I got build-up from it. Initially I loved what it did.

[The same was true of a Garnier Fructis product that messed up my hair real bad, after giving me amazing hair for about 6 weeks.]

I never had a problem with the Joico K-Pak, though, FWIW, as mentioned in the OP. And apparently they both have mineral oil? Maybe it's in different concentrations.

Anyway, my wariness of the whole mess is why I switched to Emergencee.

I voted Yes, Medium, High.

I've never used the K-Pak but my hair hates mineral oil to the point that I won't even try anything that has it in the ingredients.

Mineral oil leaves my hair greasy and dry. It leaves my scalp greasy with big, white flakes, as well as itching constantly. My hair is mostly fine, though I've found some strands that are coarse.

Fine, porosity med-high and the answer is I don't know for sure.

When I used Joico K-pak, I love how my hair feels and even looks for a few hours. It really seems to lower the frizz, but I'm afraid of it building up so I don't use it anymore because of the mineral oil.

I haven't found a protein treatment that seems to click with my hair except for genuine K-pak but like I say,(can't get GVP or Nexxus Emergencee) I'm afraid to use it in case I wreck my hair even worse than it is.

I've been trying to make do with AOGPB but it doesn't have enough protein in it for me. If I knew if my hair could handle K-pak for sure, I wouldn't care about the price, I would use it often.

BTW, from the experts here what should I look for or how should I set up a good test of the K-pak? What would be the "baddies" to look out for? I'm afraid to use it by itself, should I do that?

While I could set this up to collect really good data--not enough responses allowed--I don't think there is a real answer to this by hair qualities. Not everyone answered all the questions. Almost 60% who know they have problems .

It would be interesting to know what % of people in the general curly population had each texture and porosity. Either more fine haired curlies choose to answer, or as I suspect--the greatest % of curlies have fine hair. The porosity is distributed in a normal bell curve--which I would anticipate, too.

Overall, I think we can say that texture and porosity aren't the defining factor in tolerance for mineral oil.

I know some have a problem from just one use but I wanted to try K-Pak at least 2 times before giving my 2cents. I'm Coarse/Med-High porosity.

I didn't notice any ill effects, this is the only product that I have containing mineral oil and I don't plan to use it more then a couple times a month. I figured if RCC could use it without issues then I could to and our hair is similar in texture/porosity. I also Low Poo once a week or so through my length.

M/semiporous and my hair hates mineral oil in anything or any order/amount. It's weighed down, gunky, and plastic looking when I use a product with it.
