Ponytails
When you make ponytails do you brush the top part of your hair?
Like this:

I know it is supposed to be a no-no to brush while dry but it's the only way I like my ponytails. I don't do it often. It's usually for second day hair and not even all the time. So I hope it's not too damaging. Opinions?

I don't brush, only because I really don't care for the way it looks on me pulled back so tight. I kind of just finger-comb and arrange it so you can def. still see the curly texture. Some days it requires some patience to get it looking just right!

I don't because brushing out my root curl would be counterproductive, make more frizz, and cause more damage.
If someone has straighter roots, it might be easier.

I have straight roots and I wet the hair and then brush. I also put a bit of gel. So I get no frizz.
Does it seem like it's be damaging?

Well, on me it tends to be because it's too much working against the grain. My second and third day roots are still curly, so making them straight and/or sleek is a PITA.
I think it would be a lot less damaging on straighter roots, especially if you are wetting them first.

I finger comb. But the curl pattern on the top of my head is so loose my second day hair tends to look straight anyway.

Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm just pulling my hair back around the house no I won't brush it. If I'm wearing it out in public yes I will brush it smooth like that. It's how I've always done it and to me it looks more polished.

I simply pull my hair back. If there are any big lumps sticking out, I gently rake it back with my fingertips. I tend to like the looser lumpy look on me though. I don't do slicked back.

same here. I just pull my hair back. I also like the looser look. if my hair is pulled back too tight or too straight it looks awful on me. it makes my face look too severe and/or long. I usually need a bit of hair hanging out of the pony too.

I did it that way for at least 3 years (with a comb, not a brush, tho). Sprayed it with some spray gel and combed once more. Never had a problem with the curl bouncing back again - I would wear it like that at least 5 days a week before I got my hair cut!

I just take a bunch of hair and pull it back, leaving out several tendrils. if I want a tighter pony, I flip over, grab my hair, flip back, smoothing the hair, and tie. brushes and my hair do not work well.
I doubt it's damaging tho.

I third this. I wore severely pulled back ponytails for years before going CG - and now I like the character the little bumps give me (so long as they're not huge bumps).

I fourth this.
I don't and won't use a brush or a comb because I would probably break it.
If I don't have the little bumps it makes me look severe. They used to annoy(sp? that does not look right) me, but now I kind of like it.
If I pull it back in a ponytail I have to wear it like that the rest of the day because it pulls the wave/curl out.

Not pulled straight back, no. Or not usually. But I do like the low pony with side part, and for that yes brushed smooth looks better to me. I don't use a bristle brush, but a cushion brush with plastic bristles.

I did mine like that for years, brushed it back with a Denman, tied it back (pretty tightly) then smoothed it all down further with a bristle brush and hairspray(!)- all whilst wet. It didn't seem to damage it at all. I don't do it these days though, I wait until it's dry then just finger comb it all back, so it's a bit bumpy and less severe looking, like others have said.

I do brush my hair back when it is wet, when doing a Ponytail. I love the smoothest look for my face.
Of course, I love a full curly ponytail also.
Here's my pic:

5th this. It's too severe on my face and i think it just flows better or looks cuter to have it loose with a few bumps and some hair sticking out. But i think it all depends on your curl type and face shape.

Where is my brush anyway...?
I never use a brush.
I spritz it with my mix of water & oils (and occasionally even small amounts of A-cones if it's too frizzy). Then I rake it back with my fingers and put it up in a poof. I actually like the "bumpies" and I, too, leave a few curls out in the front, so it doesn't look severe.
