Default DT after protein

I am getting highlights and a trim today. The advice here has been really good and my hair is super healthy from following it so I feel comfortable doing the color. Plus, I totally trust my hairstylist as we've been "together" for 15 years. She has seen me through a lot of craziness. I went and got the GVP K-Pak to do a protein treatment after color. I have been reading posts about this, but I just want to clairify...

How many days do most of you wait to do the protein treatment? How long do you leave it on?

If you do a DT afterwards, how long do you leave that on?

If you have any other advice that's great! TIA!

I was hoping too! I had checked some threads and was having trouble finding what I needed. Oh well.

I got highlights recently and did a protein treatment the next day. I have had to do several more since and ALOT of DTs to begin to restore the damage. I have very porous, coarse hair so it damaged it a lot. And she used the lowest volume bleach they have.

So I have been doing protein treatments followed by heavy moisture every other day for a week. That's tricky since my hair is is protein sensitive!! so I am trying to achieve the happy balance.

I do protein for under 5 minutes, then a DT for 30-60 mns with heat. I use a REALLY high quality DT (CJ or JC)

I think a short protein treatment followed by a long DT is pretty standard. But if you have fine, non-porous hair you might do a longer protein treatment. I think K-pac says 5 minutes.

THANKS for the advice.

My hair is fine (although a LOT of it) and not very porous. I think I'll shoot for the 5min. protein and a longer DT.

I was lucky my hair is still in pretty good shape. I hope your hair comes around for you soon! Ah, what we do for beauty!

Thanks again!

Struttswife says to DT 48 hrs after color. I also read that you should do a protein treatment before. color.... But check with her.

I don't know for sure about protein treatment after colouring (been years since I coloured my hair), but I agree with rudee - check with Struttswife as she'll know for sure.

If it helps, I currently do a protein treatment (5 mins) about once a week (roughly - depends on when I have the extra time to stand in the shower to wait on it), and follow up with a deep treatment (10 minutes, that's all it needs normally). I had been doing them once every two weeks, and my hair was soaking up the protein so I figured it needed them a bit more often. However, my hair is porous, but uncoloured, so YMMV.

i no longer do protein treatments, but when i did color my hair (regularly, every 3 weeks for YEARS -- which is why i stopped!) i DTd immediately after i shampooed the color out. if i went to a salon, i didn't dry my hair, just blotted it damp dry with a towel, then added some conditioner and drove home, where after some time, i rinsed it out. great! i know you are not supposed to DT after a color, but i did not know that then, and it worked well for me!! it was the only way i could deal with color. it never caused fading, i colored every 3 weeks due to roots. (by the way, if i did not go to a salon, it was my daughter's friend who is a stylist who does color and did my color, so, what i am saying is, same thing.)
and now, i'm free from all of that!!
