Ahhh....CG, but still itchy scalp. Help! :)

I've been CG for over a month. I was hoping it would help with the major itch on my scalp. I've determined (through reading the boards) that it is not dandruff. I have flaking, but it is white. I've tried doing Tea Tree Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar wash/rinse, but nothing is helping. Any other ideas for me?

I'm currently using:
-Suave Naturals Co-Wash (with Brown Sugar for exfoliating)
-GTTT for Conditioning
-Herbal Essence TT for style

I've also tried the Jessi Curl products. Anyway, I'm wondering if the Herbal Essence product has something in it that is irritating my scalp. Can you recommend a different styling product that would be more gentle? I'm considering trying to make the flax seed gel to see if that will help.

I'm just desperate to end the itch once and for all. I've been dealing with it for about three years (since I started having children--strangely enough).

Thanks for any help you can offer!
make sure you're doing a vigorous scalp massage (pads of fingers only- no scratching with fingernails) when cleansing. Don't just tickle your head, If you're not massaging enough, I imagine that gunk can stay on your scalp. CO-washing really only works when the scalp is massaged really really well. It will take longer than just mushing regular ol' shampoo through your hair used to do, but it's so worth it. Your hair and scalp will feel so fresh and invigorated!
I am only 2 weeks in, but I quit my first try at CG several years ago for this reason.

I am using the GTTT as my co wash, so that when I "scrub" my scalp it is the Tea Tree Oil that is cleaning it. I am having much better luck this time around. When I co wash with V05 Tea Therapy instead of GTTT, I am itchy by the end of the day, so I know the GTTT is helping.

Make sure you are getting thee conditioner all the way off the scalp when you co-wash.

That is what happens a lot of times when you get the itchy scalp with being a CG'er. And you have to make sure you massage the spots that itch very well when you are washing and rinse the hair downward.

The chemical called Methylchloroisothiazolinone could be the issue. It is a preservative found in conditioners (and other products) that serve an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. It can act as an irritant to the skin in large doses and with prolonged contact with the skin. HENCE why it's found in cosmetics and toiletries that are only in contact with the skin for a short amount of time. An example would be: Conditioners. Which we all know are meant to be rinsed out and off...and usually NOT left on the skin..in this case the scalp.

I had this same problem of a terribly itchy scalp when I became a CG'er and I wasn't sure what the problem was because I never had such itchy scalp UNTIL I became a CG'er and I had no dandruff problems at all. I did some research and found out about the preservative that I named above that is found in conditioner and other cosmetics. Sure enough.. Suave Naturals does contain that ingredient. And I am a big USER of Suave Naturals. Absolutely love the stuff! I adore the Suave Naturals Conditioner and use it more than any other. I buy the stuff in DROVES.. LOL!

Once I found that out.. I simply made sure my scalp has no conditioner on it at all. Within 2 days.. I noticed my scalp no longer itched. I massage my scalp well with the very pads of my fingers and I make sure the conditioner is THROUGHLY rinsed off my scalp. If I want to do the leave a little conditioner in my hair trick that some CG'ers do... I simply make sure the conditioner is OFF my scalp and only in my hair.

Hope this helps!
Thank you for the excellent advice. I will try to focus on scrubbing harder with the pads of my fingers. I think I may have been scratching more than scrubbing, but the scratching feels so good in the moment!

I'll also pay close attention to washing the conditioner off of my scalp.

These are things I hadn't considered. I'm going to go wash my itchy head now! Thanks again.
What I would also suggest - trying a whole new host of different products. I've been CG since 2007 and never, ever had an itchy scalp - until this past week when I tried 2 Jessicurl products for the first time. I got flakes from the Confident Coils, and my head was itching like mad for a few days (with repeated co-washes and I finally gave in to a no-poo this morning). I need to check this weekend what's in that line that's different from my other stuff, because I have never had that reaction before! Just a thought.

CG since 2/07 and loving it!
I had a major problem with scalp itch after trying the Herbal Essence Set Me Up gel. I finally decided that it must be the particular polyquanternium. After doing a low-poo that didn't solve the problem, then doing a baking soda cleanse (followed by lemon juice mixed into my conditioner to restore the normal pH of my hair), which solved the problem until I added the HESMU gel again, and I ended up having to do the low-poo then baking soda cleanse again.

I have used the Suave Naturals conditioners for co-washing since I went CG, and had no problems with them. Your mileage may vary, but it can be really helpful to sleuth this out, so that you can avoid the offending ingredient. The way hair care product formulas keep changing, knowing what to avoid (and what to look for) can be a huge help.

How do you ensure or know that you're getting all the conditioenr off the scalp? I Think I have it all off, but I 'm sure it's not. I still see bubbles in the shower as I"m rinsing??? Does a scalp brush help with this?? Even a rinse out gets into the scalp when yo'ure rinsing, so you have to scrub the scalp again, right when you're rinsing your rinse out conditioner as well???? I notice in the day when I do scalp massage, I feel my fingertips sticking to my scalp, like it's oilly a bit.

and I'm noticed too that some gels do make me itch. YOu 'd think they wouldn't since you don't put gel right on your scalp, but somehow it must get there. It's hard for me to find leave-in products (curl creams, gel etc) that don't bother me. Even these gellys, like Kinky curly, tend to be drying, and I don't know what is in them to make them drying, no alcohol

I just wanted to add one more thing. I had the same problem and noticed that the tea tree oil actually made my scalp worse! I'm going to try some of the suggestions put on your thread.
People can have sensitivities to all sorts of things. You can be having environmental allergies which appear as scalp itch/flaking. You may be having a reaction to preservatives or fragrances, detergents or any other of a slew of ingredients in products.
If you notice one or two that give you a problem - look at the ingredient lists. Anything those "itchy" products share is a probable suspect!
Here's a starter list for preservatives: science-y hair blog: Preservatives Which Can Itch
"Dandruff" is a catch-all for scalp dermatitis. Any irritation or inflammation of the skin/scalp causes the skin to "turnover" or speed through the cell maturation process quickly. Sometimes becoming more oily, but often becoming very dry. The skin's barrier breaks down and it cannot keep out chemicals and it cannot keep in moisture. It gets dehydrated and then more inflamed. This gives bacteria and fungi which normally live on your skin a chance to grow more than usual and this can cause more itching. I collected some reading about this issue here: science-y hair blog: Sensitive Skin (Part I)

Some things you might try are Scalpicin Maximum Strength (it's a clear liquid, it's "CG" and easy to apply and contains hydrocortisone to help reduce inflammation and relieve itching). Hydrocortisone cream works too, but takes a little more rubbing in to apply.

Do some detective work on your products. There are lots of us here with a lot of chemical allergies and sensitivities - you're not alone.

The oil-sugar scrubs (or just a scalp oiling with olive oil for 30 minutes before shampooing) can do wonders.

But if none of this helps, you might want to see a doctor. Prescription cortisone creams work for some people. Ketoconazole helps some a whole lot. You'll probably have to attack the itch on many fronts.

But once you get a plan set (and it will take time) - you'll know how to cope.

I used to struggle with scalp itchies with co-washing and would low poo often. No matter how much I scrubbed with the pads of my fingers it was never enough and I would end up with little white flakes at my scalp which was not dandruff. You can just massage with the scalp brush if you don't want to run it through your length but I never have build up issues anymore and low poo LESS since I started using my shampoo brush or denman. I think a lot of people afraid to use them because it's not supposed to be "CG" but who cares? You can still co wash or use botanical cleansers and shampoo less. The ultimate goal is to have healthier hair. So go ahead pick and choose what CG means to YOU by incorporating some or all of the original CG method and you'll be happier.

i no you said that your tried tea tree, but have you tried mixing tea tree with argan oil? or jojoba? if that really doesnt work, there are herbs that you can get that can help with scalp problems: marshmallow root is wonderful, to make it better make a rinse combining stinging nettle as well, ive read that stinging nettle is great for scalp conditions. use that and marshmallow root as a final rinse and see how you go

How do I ensure that I'm getting all the conditioner off my scalp? I don't. Since the new edition of Curly Girl: The Handbook came out, I've been doing the Baptismal rinse (throwing two handfuls of water at my hair after conditioning and combing my hair. I would never have believed previously that my hair could cope with this much conditioner, but I've found that my hair is not weighed down, doesn't get oily or dried out, and the curl doesn't drop out readily.

Lorraine Massey does advise people using the new method to do a scalp scrub (mix 1 Tbls. of brown sugar with conditioner, and give yourself a great scalp massage I do not agree with her suggestion of using quinoa as an alternative to brown sugar, as it's next to impossible to rinse out) about once a week, but I haven't felt the need. I tried the quinoa out of curiosity, but became seriously concerned that I could start looking like a chia head because the damp seeds would probably start sprouting if I didn't manage to get them out soon. I used to do brown sugar scrubs occasionally when I started CGing over three years ago, but found that with a really good scalp massage each time I washed my hair, I didn't have problems with scalp buildup.

When doing the Baptismal rinse, then scrunch drying your hair, you quickly get a sense of how much conditioner your hair needs, as excess conditioner comes out with excess water on your smooth surfaced towel. As a result, I can feel a big difference if I've used too much, and cut back accordingly.

If you don't want to do the Baptismal rinse, you can rinse your hair out well under the shower, or directly at the scalp with a handheld nozzle, or pouring rinse water directed at your scalp (if your hair is long enough, hold it up and out of the way until you're sure your scalp is well rinsed). You do need to add more conditioner back in then, but you can direct it to your ends, and avoid scrunching it into the hair adjacent to your scalp when you do.

One thing that can be drying in gel is glycerin, when the dew points are down, because glycerin draws water to it, and will take it from your hair if enough (for the amount of glycerin) is not available in the air. As I said above, I have found since starting to do the Baptismal rinse, that my hair does not dry out.
Peace,
Morgan

Man I also want to try a scalp brush, but am scared about having more shed, breakage, pull out hairs, as I've had bouts of high sheds! does it not cause this? I would like to use it after I finish all my conditioners, just to make sure I get the scalp clear of stuff, because even after I swam, and did a shampoo (black soap Alaffia) my head is still like major burn/wanting to itch. It feels terrible and it's sore. CAn't figure out what it is? But when I did leave Kinky curly on overnight, the next day I had itchies too. I don't know what it can be today knowing I used shampoo?? If that didn't even help, could it be I have conditioner sticking to my scalp that doesn't come off. How annoying!

I notice that when I consistently do a vinegar rinse after rinsing out all my conditioner, my scalp doesn't itch and there is far less buildup and scalp gunk.

I think I will get a scalp massage brush and use it like I pixie diffuse; place on scalp, massage a little without lifting the bristles from scalp, move to another area, press and massage, lift and move and so on and so on...
