question about a curl clump
I've been following the super-soaker thread, and looking with awe & envy at some of the pics posted. Then, looking at my hair. yuck.
So now, I'm wondering about haircuts and clumps.
When I look at any given curl clump in most of those pics, it looks like all the hairs in the clump have mostly the same length. Like there is a fairly 'clean' cut end to the clump.
My clumps aren't like that. Lets say just for a round number, my clump has 50 hairs in it. Maybe 45-ish of them will be almost the same length, and then there will be 3-5 stragglers that hang longer than the rest. Like up to an inch longer.
Should a really good curly cut mean that your curls are 'neat' looking, same length hairs in that clump?
I've had my hair cut (dry) by a deva-trained stylist, I got 'rebel' hairs that hang down from its 'clump' crowd.
I've had my hair cut wet by a stylist recommended in salons, she seemed like she was looking at the curls, but I got the same results.
Sorry to be long-winded, but does this make sense?
Is this how a curly cut just is? I'm interested to know what the ends of other curlies clumps are like.

Some of my clumps are as you describe - a few stragglers not conforming.
For me, I think it's because I have many curl types on my head. My stylist has cut some in the back to make them a bit more uniform but I haven't found a method or product that will completely make it go away.

I have scraggly hairs too, that seem to be a different length or a different type. In fact, the hairs that stick out seem to have a bigger curl width than most of my hair. I don't know anymore, I just let it be.

I think some people's hair clump differently from day to day, so when your stylist cuts your hair it's all even that day. But next time, it all clumps a little differently so you have hairs (of differing lengths) from different clumps forming a new clump.
Just a theory.

The only consistent thing about curly hair is that it's inconsistent day to day!

you're right KM - you can do your routine one day and have great hair and then the next do the same thing and it just doesn't work. It's just curly hair.

There is no question our hair is just plain wonky! Then factor in weather, product, application.... Its consistently inconsistent!
I will say my clumps are boosted tremendously by the fact that I have long layers; they are cut almost like steps, so the hairs on any given "step" gravitate towards each other.

Our curls will definitely not clump the same from day to day.
With a good cut, however, your curls will usually "play" together nicely, no matter how they decide to clump.
Unless, of course, they don't. Curls have PMS, just like we do
