How much of your scalp can you see when your hair is wet? (pics)

I know I've seen a thread about this somewhat recently, but I can't find it anywhere. Lately, I've been able to see more and more of my scalp every time I get out of the shower and put products in. I also kind of feel like my hair feels/looks thinner than normal (smaller ponytail), even when it's dry, but that could just be a psychological thing. I shed a whole lot in the shower, but I think that's pretty normal.

The first picture shows the right side of my head, which is the worst. The second shows the top/back of my head. Third one shows the left side, which is not bad but still worse than it was a year or so ago. All of the spots that look like camera flash reflections are spots where my scalp is showing through.

Anyway, does anyone else's hair look like this when it's wet? Anyone have pictures? Here are some of my personal theories:

1.) The texture/thickness of my hair is changing due to hormones (about 9 years ago is when my hair drastically changed from 2B to 3B/3C)

2.) My hair is becoming healthier since I've turned CG, so it's not as fluffy/frizzy as it used to be and therefore does not look as thick.

3.) I'm imagining it. Or it's always looked like this, and I'm just now noticing it.

4.) I really am losing hair. EEKS! I went on the birth control pill in august of 2007, got off it in sept 2008.

Basically, this was a pointless post. Haha I think I'm just looking for people who can tell me that they relate to this so that I can stop worrying! Please tell me this is normal!

It could be that your hair is clumping more at the roots now, so you can see more of your scalp. Have you noticed more hair loss while in the shower (or any time for that matter)?

Quite a bit. I only worry when more of my scalp is visible when my hair is dry.
My hair does the same when it is wet, it clumps all the way to the root. It's a challenge since it seems to stay all crazy when dry too
Mine's pretty much like that only it looks worse to me as my hair's much darker than yours, so the contrast between hair and scalp is bigger! It's mostly ok when it's dry, but the top is a problem (very thin there - I'm quite paranoid about it!).

My scalp doesn't show when my hair is wet, but my hair is so incredibly thick! If your hair has always looked like that when wet, then I'm sure that it's perfectly normal. Your hair looks baby-fine and smooth, so it's probably normal for your hair type! It might be that you simply did not notice before! The only thing that alarms me is that you comment you've been seeing more and more of your scalp. It's certainly possible that your curls are clumping more, but if it's beginning to concern you, I'd see your doctor. A lot of conditions can cause hair loss as a side-effect, like hyperthyroidism as well as some auto-immune conditions. (My hair thinned out a lot my last lupus flare, so I know the feeling!) It might also be hormones as well. All of these things are highly unlikely, but if you notice more hair loss or thinning, then I would definitely approach your doctor about it!

Thanks everyone! That clumping theory makes a LOT of sense! I feel a lot better now.

It's just so strange....for my entire life, I've always automatically told everyone that I have VERY thick, SUPER coarse, HUGE hair. And that APPEARED to be true before I got on CG because it was so fluffy and frizzy and undefined and blahhh. And it definitely felt bigger than it was because I was so self conscious about it. Now that my hair is under control, I am just recently starting to realize that my hair is actually very, very fine, and not nearly as thick as I thought it was (which is probably why I feel like its starting to thin). My world was completely flipped upside down once I realized that! And it's going to open up a whole new world of products for me, too. Crazy.
I agree with the others, but if youre concerned, or start to notice more, a trip to your dermatologist might help to ease your mind

I see quite alot of scalp when my hair is wet too, especially on top - it freaks me out a bit too! Since going CG, my hair has gradually gotten curlier and curlier at the root - so the clumping theory definately makes sense.

Once dry however, the hair seems to swell up and fill in the gaps. I don't even worry about a bit of frizz on the crown because it fills in too. Watch out for the sun, though...I've found my scalp sunburning alot easier since going CG!!

Good luck! ( Oh and it would be cool to see dry pictures of your hair too to see the difference!)

I can relate! I have been stressing about this so much lately. I wish I had pics to show you, but mine looks pretty similar to yours when it is wet. I always knew I had baby fine hair, but I used to think I had a lot of it. Only lately, I really don't think there is a lot of it. I think I always thought I had a lot of hair because it has a ton of body and gets very poofy and looks like I have more than I do. I remember one stylist who said she was really surprised when she started working with my hair that it wasn't thick. So I guess at least when it's dry it LOOKS thicker than it is.

I hate when I get out of the shower because I can't stop obsessing over the "bald spots"! And I even have a couple after it dries. I can't tell if my hair is thinning, or if i just pay way more attention to it now that I do CG. It's like, maybe it was always like this, but I just didn't notice it before.

Anyway, you are definitely not alone!
I'm stressing and have the last three years about the same thing, and my husband ha sbeen helping me understand one big thing that has changed us. Before I used to brush, brush brush, befroe I knew I had some curl, in fact in my pictures of me as a little kid, you see no curl. I brushed it while wet and brush brush brush, so I trained all that curl to separate. And if you separate all teh hairs that form into clumps, you get a fuller look. I looked like I had straw hair. And I would hear the same things as you, man you have lots of hair, your hair is so thick. etc. I could never wear my hair down, because it was so poofy and everyone teased me. ANd all of that stopped after my third child. But that was also when I noticed it getting more curly on its own and I noticed lots of shedding (I think I probabyl shed like this always but it all went into the brush and I didn't notice it.) But I still always look at myself (this has been for three years now) and I still look at myself like I dont' know my hair, like I am missing half my hair, I miss that poof. ANd I go into stages where I think I am losing hair/thinning. But then my husband reminds me, in fact today he counted in one of my little clumps, there's 30 hairs. So in all those clumps, even though my clumps are translucent, you can see through them, which I thought I was the only one, tehre's plenty of hair in each of those and if you brush them, separate them all, it's giong to fill out more. That's my theory I"m using to hold on to my sanity. Because yes, I was told I have med. textuer, not coarse like I thought. So I don't think it's that we have lost hair so much as we've changed teh way we treat it and we're finding out we didn't really have all that bulk from having so much hair, but rather the separation. I still get jealous looking at your curlies who have curl and so much density, but that's not me, my "density from the past" was separattion, but as a curly, I realize I don't have that hair. I want to have teh same poof in a curly style as I did in a "straight" style. I don't ilke my curl right now, because it clumps, yes, but because I don't haev much, my clumps are very sparsed out, you can see through them and I think it looks terrible.

Stress definitely helps you lose hair.. so does losing weight.

Like everyone else, I think it's because your hair is healthier and clumping better now. The better the clump the more scalp you're going to see.
Thanks, I feel like with all your positivity, I received a big hug from God. Thanks so much. It is just adjusting to seeing different amounts of hair when going from poof, semi-straight to curly. And then you start to notice more. I do stress a lot, about everything, from no hair to my white hairs. So thanks, I'll try to stress less and enjoy what I have. The rest of you all should try, I say TRY, cuz it's hard when you're anal and stressy like me, to relax more.

Looking at some old photo's recently I've definitely lost hair as I've got older, it's not just the clumping thing going on. I brush it out when I'm colouring and then I don't have the "see-through" curls any more but it's still very thin on top and no matter what I do I can see scalp up there. So unfair, no-one should have to lose hair.

Contaminated tap water and washing hair too frequently. I recommend a chlorine shower filter or using filtered water, washing hair once a week, and applying oil to hair instead of conditioner. It worked for my curly hair that always tangled badly and would clog up my brush after brushing as I was ripping it out in small clumps.

I also recommend drinking and using only filtered water for cooking and coffee.

Chlorine speeds up the aging of skin and causes split ends and hair loss

Very hard water is a common cause of hair hair loss because calcium build up will harden the hair causing it to break as it coats the scalp and blocks new hair growth.

I so know how you feel, my area of worry is the top of my head though grrr I'm pretty sure my hair had thinned in that area and it sucks, but only time will tell. I'm natural now so maybe it'll grow in now that I'm taking care of my hair.

I can't see any scalp, but I do have a thin spot in the top of my head. I can feel it more when it's wet. Sucks....
