when your waves/curls sort of peter-out

Yes, my waves are on strike. Some background:

I am pretty certain that I am CG...cowash with Suave naturals, sometimes one condition, sometimes AOHR. Rinse upside-down, scrunch in mop C, then scrunch in KCCC. Sometimes I top with BRHG or Angell, scrunch with a t-shirt. I'll use clips up top, I diffuse.

My hair is rather fine, I color it about every two months, and it has grown past my shoulders. I've tried a ACV rinse. I've also tried a KPac protein treatment. Recently I even tried a Ouidad deep treatment out of pure desperation.

And yet my hair is just...blah! It used to wave up pretty consistently. And now, they just sort of hang, end up in a ponytail and I end up annoyed at all of the time I took in the attempt at my hair that morning.

Any thoughts on my cranky waves? Maybe CG is not for me (although I've been "on it" for over a year now)? Perhaps it is the length, or a product that is just causing issues?

Thanks in advance...KG
I'm having this problem lately too and am wondering what to do...it's funny that I fought my wavy/curly hair for so long by straightening it, then I went CG (albeit only a couple months ago now, I think) because I wanted to embrace my waves...and they disappear!

Even with CG, products can definitely build up gradually over time. I'd recommend a low poo - or perhaps even a single wash with a 'cone-free sulfate shampoo - to see if it perks up. I know quite a few curlies on here who do a sulfate poo every once in awhile, and I know for me personally, doing a low poo at least once a week helps my hair from getting weighed down from product build up. Sulfates aren't entirely evil if used in moderation; a once a month clarifying poo with a 'cone-free sulfate can be helpful for some curlies. This last section of this article, called, "In Defense of Shampoo" is a good read.

I'm a wavy and had problems with my hair getting weighed down and overconditioned when I tried a CG routine a few years ago. I use shampoo bars or a low-poo (Jessicurl cleansing cream) once or twice a week now, and my hair is much better for it.

If you are very fine you need protein more often than just in a DT. I also think KCCC is very heavy, I've decided to take it out of rotation. I would try using just the BRHG and/or Angell. (you could try mixing them) And using a different condish, one that has some protein in it. Also, weekly a loo-poo is a good idea for us wavy/curlies!

Another thin/fine curly here. A couple things struck me about your post:

-- I can't grow my hair shoulder length without the weight pulling out my curls/waves; chin-length is best for me

-- I use AOHR, but alternate with protein conditioners and a light-weight rinse out like KCKT

-- I use KCCC, but now that my hair isn't as dry, I've substantially cut back on how much I use; I top it with BRHG for hold

-- Angel is a very soft gel; I don't think you're going to get much hold with it, and it's pretty moisturizing. My hair just went limp when I tried it.

-- I gave up my leave-in conditioner recently, and my curls perked up substantially.

-- I do a weekly ACV and a weekly sulfate-free shampoo

Hope some of these thoughts help!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the responses.

If anyone has recs for a nice protein-rich conditioner, let me know!
Have you always been a curly? Maybe it is a hormonal change? Hormones can do a doozy on hair and skin.

AOHR is only an occasional DT for me - much too heavy for a rinse-out.

I love KCCC but can't use too much without it weighing me down. I top it or whatever with BRHG or LA Looks Sports Gel usually. KCCC alone falls on me after a while.

Angel is like using nothing. I like ArcAngell pretty well and use it occasionally, although I doubt I'll repurchase as I like BRHG and LALSG better, and they don't have castor oil.

I don't use a leave-in unless my hair just seems to need it that day - I do usually use 2-3 pumps of FOTE AVG before my other products for some weightless moisture, curl enhancement/definition/clumping, and frizz control.

I do occasional ACV rinses and regular low-poos with GTTTT

And in addition to what Lolo had to say, I despise Suave Naturals, especially the coconut - it just makes me a limp, frizzy, weird mess, regardless of what styling products I follow with.

Everyone pretty much summed it all up. I wish this thread could have come up about a month ago though heh.

The only thing I have to add is that the KPac protien has mineral oil in it, and that weighs my hair down. I've had great (I mean phenomenal) results with the Redken CAT. It has magnesium sulfate in it, which I wasn't super happy with in my styling products, but doesn't seem to bother me as a rinse out protien treatment. I'm sure to those who avoid it at all costs won't love it though. I just love that there is a "weight-free" protien treatment.

I knew there was something else I meant to mention! It doesn't only weigh it down, it coats it sort of like silicones do and can keep moisture from getting in and just cause cause build-up.

AO GPB protein conditioner is weight-free for me - I've been using it at least once a week and can usually go for 3-4 days without my hair getting heavy or greasy looking or feeling. I like it better than others I've tried, but I haven't used Redken CAT.

I recommend AO GPB too. It's one of my favorite conditioners. After I get my hair colored, I use AO Rose Mosqueta which has some protein in it. Twice a month, I use Nexxus Emergencee although I'm not sure it makes enough difference for me to buy it again.

I still have Emergencee but don't use it all since starting with AOGPB. I have done a couple of the longer treatments with the GPB instead. I can definitely tell a difference in my curls with it, and I could never say for sure with Emergencee. My hair may just like its type of proteins better than that in Emergencee.

Once again, thanks for the recs everyone.

Today is much better. I co-washed with Whole Foods 365, applied curl keeper upside-down on soaking wet hair, then scrunched in BRHG. A little blot with my t-shirt and then I diffused.

Clumps and waves are back, even though it was a tad crunchier than usual. Scrunched out mostly. I did pick up the AOGBP, so we'll see.

Ha...maybe less is just more for me.
