Default I smell like a green pine tree air freshener

Why does AO GPB have to smell like this? It does such amazing things for my hair when I need a protein hit but man - the smell annoys me!

I can't quite figure out what AO GPB is (Avalon Organics? Aubrey Organics? Something something Balm?), but does it by any chance have Tea Tree Oil in it? If it does, that stuff smells sort of like pine.

Sorry - it's Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner. It has balsam oil in it.

Ah-ha! It's most likely the balsam oil that smells like pine. Balsam is a type of evergreen tree.

There are different types of plants considered to be balsams - some are flowering and fruiting bushes, but I think all the balsam oils are derived from the evergreen tree.

xcptnl - is this conditioner heavy like the honeysuckle rose? The HR always left my hair feeling coated (& I couldn't STAND the smell)! I want to try this one but not if it's heavy like the HR.

It's definitely too perfumey, yes, but I don't think it smells at all evergreen-y .

I just have the basic formula - are you talking about it or one of those alternative Whole Foods fragrances you mentioned a while back?

No-I used the basic one today. Does yours have the balsam oil in it? Maybe my batch got too much.

It is a thick conditioner but I can get it all rinsed out without any feeling of my hair being coated. If you have any protein intolerance be careful because that is why I use it - to get a hit of protein for my fine hair.

I feel as though I smell like a hippy whenever I use it.
I also think it's a bit gross that it contains oyster lol.

I don't know who the consultant might be for Aubrey's fragrances, but WOW, they certainly have a unique sense of smell. All of Aubrey's conditioners have an overpowering aroma, don't they? It always makes me less inclined to reach for them, although ultimately I do because they perform so well for me.

I'm sorry you smell like pine air freshener, xcptnl.

I used GPB this morning, too, but I'm not aware of the scent after my hair dries. Maybe I've become immune!

I agree with Jillipoo -- the folks at Aubrey seriously need to dial down their fragrances.

And I agree with both of you. Like Jillipoo said - I hesitate to use them and I find myself not using them often because of that. But the GPB works wonders on my hair so I make myself use it once or month or so.

I don't know if mine has balsam oil - I'll look and see, if I can remember, LOL. I think I do remember seeing it on the list. Fortunately, the smell doesn't linger once rinsed out, on my hair anyway. Be sure to shake it well (hard to do when the bottle is new and full) according to the instructions - maybe if you don't, you're getting a stronger hit of the stinky honeysuckle or, in your case, the balsam oils. Its strong fragrance supposedly comes from the former and does seem to be mostly what I smell.

It is thick but not as heavy/rich/oily as AOHR, which I can mainly use only as a DT. GPB doesn't leave any film or coating on my hair at all. I've been using it at least once a week for the past 2-3 months and have done the 45 minute treatment a couple of times, too. My hair seems to enjoy the proteins in it more than those in GVP Reconstructing Conditioner (fake Joico K-Pak) or Nexxus Emergencee.

Ellageorgina, the protein comes from oyster shells, not oysters themselves - if that was the case, it might need the strong perfume to cover the smell, LOL!

I so didn't know about shaking it!! Thanks for that tip. Maybe the oils are rising to the top and because I had no clue I was getting more oils than the other. I will definitely do that next time. It did fade around mid-day but up until then - blech.

Auntnett, that is a great point, and one that Aubrey frequently fails to emphasize. It's *really* important to shake their conditioners, even though when you first buy them and the bottle is full to the brim, shaking it requires that you lift weights first to build up your muscles.

Thanks, y'all, so much!! I've been needing a good protein conditioner, & as long as it rinses out really well, I'm going to give it a try.

I'm always the lone defender of AO GPB's scent, but I love it and feel I need to chime in -- it reminds me of a Christmas candle from my childhood. And it does wonderful things for my hair.
