why is my 2nd day hair curlier?

I've read that whatshercurl hates first day hair. Now that I'm getting my routine down, I also find this to be true. It at least doesn't look good for 4 or 5 hours after I shower (or water wash).

My 2nd day hair seems to be almost curly, and holds the curl better. Like I know if I can get my waves to last through day one, then they will be even better on day 2. But if I fail the styling exam on day one, I might as well wash on day two.

Is this an indicator of something I'm unware of? Like really porous hair or something? Or the opposite? Am I searching for meaning when there is none? Should I just not care and be happy that I get 2nd day hair?

thanks for listening!

I would never say that I have better hair the second day, but it definitely doesn't look it's best until about 4-5 hours after I'm out of the shower. I saw Jonathan at Frizz-off say that's because we have to be patient with our hair through the drying process. My hair actually starts to look frizzy about 1 hour before it is completely dry. Kind of funny, but it's true. Then about now, it starts to look tired. (it's 8:00 at night) the only way I can get good second day hair is to curl the top section with a curling iron in about 6 spots. It may be considered sacriligious by some, but that is the only way. I do wet it almost every day though.

Lol. I also far prefer my hair on days 2 and 3. But for the opposite reason: they are less curly those days!

whatsercurl 08-24-2009 06:20 PM

I DO prefer my hair after a couple days. And my hair gets much curlier as the days go by.

I've spent a lot of time trying to re-create Day 2+ hair on Day 1. Just never happens. :sad3:

I think it has something to do with my hair being fine and needing natural oils but who knows. If you figure it out let me know. ;)

There was a whole post on this a few months ago. There were a few other curlies who found the same thing. Can't seem to remember the thread title or the poster. Sorry. :(

My 2nd day hair is much curlier and has more volume...not sure if it just takes my hair forever to dry? My 2nd day hair is definitely drier (less moisturized), but also curlier...and often cuter!

I have no idea why...but if I can get 2nd and 3rd day hour out of it, I"m not going to complain!

Yes volume too. I really just don't think my hair likes to be clean.

What do you do to get 2nd day hair?

whatsercurl 08-24-2009 07:16 PM

I pineapple. I used to spritz with water, smooth on some gel or CK in the morning then scrunch. Lately I haven't even been doing that much. So lazzzzzzyyyyy :laughing2:

goobernut 08-24-2009 07:22 PM

I second the pineapple thing. I can't wait until all my hair is long enough to pineapple. I'm really digging spray and then CJ Aloe Fix.

mosuna 08-24-2009 07:35 PM

I sleep on a satin pillowcase then spray Mr. Right. Today I individually coated each curl with flax gel...awesome!

curlygirl18 08-25-2009 10:43 AM

I pineapple and then use Curl Junkie Aloe Fix. I take some from the bucket, wet my other hand a little, and then rub together and then smooth over my hair. That used to be it, but lately I have been doing that, and then putting my head upside down, putting my shower cap on, and then taking a shower. When I get out, I still have a lot of volume.

I found that before, when I smoothed it on, I was crushing the canopy a lot. Now it's better! :)

That's always been kind of true of mine, even 35 years ago when I used to sleep on big ole curlers - especially then, in fact.

I heard a stylist say of Cybil Shepherd back in her Moonlighting days that her hair always did better with a little residue, and I remember thinking "Yes! That's it exactly!".

Mine may not necessarily get curlier in succeeding days, but does just "do" better. It's can sometimes just be too soft on the first day, depending on what conditioner and other products I use.

melle76a 08-25-2009 02:58 PM

i do tend to find that my hair feels more voluminous (and sometimes more curly) on the second day, provided that i haven't worn it back/up. i'm not sure why that is. i feel like my hair doesn't like to be too 'soft'- the curls just get droopy and limp- and something about the hair getting a bit dried out (or getting past the softness/conditioning of freshly-done hair) seems to work well for me. when i was in college, i only shampooed (horrors!) and rarely used conditioner for fear of weighing down my fine hair. it was SO much more curly then! i'm almost tempted sometimes to do that again, almost the opposite of CG, just to have that curl back!

I've noticed that the hair at my temples and the nape of my neck get curlier when I massage my scalp with oil before going to bed, so you might have something here. Someone said awhile back that using an oil spray tightened up their curls, I think it was on that monstrous KBB review thread.

oopsmyhalofelloff 08-25-2009 05:09 PM

I've just been realizing this that last week or so. Today i have 3rd day hair for the first time ever and it has more curl and body then day 1 by far. I love the pineapple!

My 2nd + day routine is as follows. Pineapple and sleep on satin pillowcase. When I shower in the morning a fine mist of water does get on my hair, when I am done showing I get dressed then take my scrunchy out and spritz all over with a water/condish mix. Sometimes i'll put a little curl creme over the top scrunching lightly. It dries very quickly and I flip over and give it a good scrunching and off I go... love it!

I'm going to push the envelope and attempt 4th day soon, i'm interested to see how long I can go. LOL

@whatsercurl - that is a really interesting observation...I also have fine curls...my hair never looks as good the first day, it always looks better on the second day or third. I actually have less frizz! ( I just pineapple at night in a.m wet down my hands in the sink with a dab of conditioner run over the curls a few times) I have been trying to figure out why i get better second day hair...maybe i will try adding some spray in oil on first day hair???

BeinDeb 05-19-2015 10:39 PM

I too, have fine curls with the added issue of naturally high porousity. I actually prefer my 3rd day hair, and have never liked day 1. I have to rewet every day and must add product - leave in, gel, etc. Where it goes, who knows?!?! I suspect it takes that long to actually get enough product into my hair to make it happy. By then, it does feel a little producty, but the fullness and the curl definition is well worth any residue!

BotticelliBrit 05-20-2015 03:38 AM

I get what you mean. I like my first day hair, but as the days go on my hair does get curlier. I think because it gets dryer, so it kind of shrinks up. Less moisture for me = more curl. It's also more voluminous and wild. I like the volume and curl on my second/third day hair, but I love the definition and silkiness of my first day hair.

I think quite a few people experience this sort of thing (especially lately, I seem to be reading a few posts on this).

DrRach 05-20-2015 04:37 AM

I have been getting great 2nd and 3rd day hair recently, and as im going camping next week (for 17 days, so no gym sessions to require regular washing) i will see if i can get 4th or 5th!! Maybe the damp British 'summer' might ruin that plan but who knows?

I went to the gym this morning with 3rd day hair and it looked much better than day 1, it was a shame to get it all sweaty! My hair is thin and fine, and looks silky but over defined when freshly styled, so i always prefer it after its been roughed up abit and has more volume. A quick spray of diluted conditioner reshapes the curls and damps down canopy frizz, follwed by smoothing a bit of styling foam down individual curls to reclump and define and its good to go!

ExpectoPatronum 05-20-2015 08:55 AM

Count me in as another who has better 2nd and 3rd day hair than the first! Day 1 is when my hair is mostly 2c. The next day or two, the 3a ringlets come to join the party.

For me, I think it's because my hair takes so long to dry when it is fresh out of the shower. The heaviness from the water pulls my wave pattern down a little. For second day hair, I spritz it with some water and then reapply whatever products I feel I need to. Because my hair isn't soaked, it isn't as heavy so my curl pattern doesn't get pulled out as much.

My hair is low porosity. I don't know whether I'd consider it medium or coarse, though. That's the one hair property that's still giving me trouble. I tend to lean more towards coarse. So, it might not be a fine hair thing.
