Protein-Free Conditioners

Anyone found any new ones lately, or tried anything new? The main protein-free ones I'm familiar with are AOWC, AOHR, and Burt's Bees Super Shiny Grapefruit and Sugar Beet. Could anyone suggest a deeper moisturizer? I know a lot of people say they find AOWC and AOHR highly moisturizing, enough to use as a DT, but I'm using them in huge quantities (I go through a bottle in 4 days) and my hair is still dry. Is there something in a similar price range I could use as a protein-free DT?
Type 2b/2c, med/coarse, low porosity, medium density

Co-wash: Suave Naturals Tangerine, Live Clean Moisturizing, CJ Daily Fix, GTTT, Tigi MM

Conditioner: Tigi MM, Jessicurl WDT, CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Daily Smoothing, CJ H&B Deep Fix

Deep Treatment: same as rinse out

Leave-in: KCKT or my rinseout

Styling Aids: Alberto/V05 Gel, HETT/HESMU, KCCC
GVP CB is pretty good and protein free. You could always buy a cheap conditioner like Suave Daily clarifying (protein free) and pump it up with some olive oil and AVG and honey and use that as a deep treatment.
CG - 3/27/09
3b - dry - medium texture/medium porosity!
Co wash/rinseout/leave in: currently auditioning products
Styling: lube and BRHG
I second amping up a conditioner with honey. Really worked for me.

Currently: Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Herbal Essences Set Me Up gel (summer only), Boots Curl Creme (winter only)
Me too! I add honey and EVOO to some Suave conditioner once a week. Wait let me rephrase that, I add a little Suave conditioner to my honey and EVOO once per week!

My hair was so dry though that I did it every other day for a little over a week before I switched to weekly treatments. I love it!
CG Since 5/23/09
3a - High Porosity / Coarse Texture on Crown, Medium Texture Beneath
CO Wash: Trader Joe's Tea Tree Cond.
Condition: Salon Care Honey Almond Cond.
Gel: Biotera gel
DT: Honey, conditioner, EVOO(1x/wk)
I've been using honey mixed with my AOHR sometimes. In fact I did it last night and am happy with the results. I've been steering away from adding extra oils because I have low porosity hair and don't need it to seal, and oils themselves are hydrophobic and therefore can't moisturize. But I think the AVG would be a good idea! I need to pick up that conditioning balm too.

see my siggie for high quality conditioners that are protein free (except Elucence- that has some brewer's yeast extract but it doesn't bother me at all)

You can get most of these from curlmart- the higher price tag pays off in quality and results!
med/coarse; porous; 2c & 3c
protein sensitive
too much glycerin and some oils give me stringlets

!!! LOVE SPRITZ AND CONDISH !!!!

co-wash: Fructis Body Boost condish
low-poo: miss my LLL Green Tea, CJDF
condish/leave-in: DMLI, Elucense MB, KCKT, JCWDT, CJCR, KBB Deep Condish, Marie Dean, Shescensit GTH
style: faves: KCCC, DMCG, AOMMJ, CGG, Elucence Foam, FSG

My CG Journey:

Bed Head Moisture Maniac is great and JCWDT is an awesome DT. I also used the GVP condish balm all winter, it makes a good rinse out or DT.
High Priestess JessMess, follower of the Goddess of the Coiling Way and Confiscator of Concoctions in the Order of the Curly Crusaders

JC WDT
Biolage Conditioning Balm or knock off
Aura Cherry and Almond Bark
Juice Organics Pomsmooth

..not DTs but heavier protein free conditioners that I don't need to use a huge amount of.
GVP Conditioning Balm - especially nice with some honey or agave added
Loreal Vive Pro Hydra-Gloss for Very Dry Hair - has one cone low on the ingredients list that hasn't caused me problems in the months I've been using it
some of the other Aubrey ones are also protein free and maybe a little less oily and flowery than AOHR - Blue Camelia and Island Naturals are some examples, I think, but I could have the names wrong

fia 2C/3A-F-iii, sensitive to some proteins
CGish since 10-16-08
Low-poo: Yes to Carrots Daily Pampering Shampoo (1-2x/week)
Rinse outs: Yes to Carrots Pampering Mud Conditioner
Styling: a little bit of leave in and a little bit of KCCC, diffusing
Olive oil DTs, honey rinses in the summer
I was looking to try AOWC after my bottle of HR runs out. I was excited to see it in this thread, but when I went to the AO website, the description reads:
Tame unruly hair with this ultra-smoothing shampoo. Protein-enriched, moisturizing formula strengthens as it protects against heat damage and breakage, restoring manageability for the look you want—whether it's silky, shiny lengths or soft, controlled curls.

INGREDIENTS: Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base, Organic Aloe Vera, White Camellia Oil, Wheat Germ Oil; Extracts of Fennel, Hops, Balm Mint, Mistletoe, Camomile and Yarrow; Organic Geranium Oil, Organic Rosemary Oil, Organic Sage Oil, Carrot Oil, Aubrey's Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamins A, C and E).
My hair really hates proteins, so I think this might be a no-go . I'll repurchase AOHR next time
- 2C - Coarse Canopy & med/fine underlayers
- MOP C Hydrating 'poo
- LOreal Natures Therapy Moisturizing condish, ION Effective Care, Garnier S&S (old formula)
- treatments: CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Repair Me!
- plopping, diffusing, and clipping the roots

Only thing I can see is maybe it AOWC has more Wheat Germ Oil than the other condishes???? Just to give ingredients of the most popular condishes!

So if it's not the wheat germ oil that makes the AWOC "Protein-enriched," then what else could it be?

The website is actually incorrect and doesn't properly list the info about AOWC, which is protein-free...I'll bump up the thread that I made about AOWC and protein.

Wheat germ oil is a pure fat and thus has no protein in it.

In another thread on low porosity hair someone stated that I should avoid parabens since my hair already has a hard time absorbing moisture. Does that mean the GVP conditioning balm is ruled out?

Those who use the olive oil and honey mixture for deep treatments..how much of each?
Also, how do I know if my hair needs protein or not?

3a, med texture, normal/high porosity
Co-wash: Suave natural coconut
Condish: same (looking for better condish for my rinse out)
Style: AG recoil and fructise garnier curling spray

But basically, to sum it up...your hair texture/porosity and its elasticity play major roles in determining whether or not you need protein. If you have hair that is closer to the coarser end of the texture spectrum, then it is less likely that you will need protein as coarse hair already contains a lot of protein in its structure. Since you have medium texture, your hair texture won't help you determine whether or not you need protein as much. If you have porous hair, protein will help "plug" the holes in the hair cuticle to prevent moisture from exiting so readily. The other major factor is how easily your hair breaks. Next time you're in the shower, see how much your hair stretches. If you pull out a few hairs and stretch them, do they seem to stretch a lot before breaking or just snap? In general, when your hair is dry or wet, does your hair tend to snap easily? If so, it's likely that you need moisture. If your hair feels hard, you probably have a build up of protein. If your hair feels mushy, you likely have a build up of moisture. Make sense?
