Getting curls in the back of the head?

For starters, I would like to thank everyone that takes the time to answer posts on this website. It must be a real drag, but all of us curlies really appreciate it!

Now, my hair has come a long way since I have gone cg, but there is still one problem that drives me up the wall. It seems that no matter what I do, I can't get the back of my head to curl! The front is 3a-3b, but the back of my head is lucky to look 2b! I just don't get it! Granted, the bottom of my canopy curls fine, it is just the top eight inches that I have a problem with. My haircut is a bob with as many layers as you can possibly get, so I don't think it's because the hair is weighed down. I always make sure to condition that part of my hair extra well and I often put double the kccc there as I do for the rest of my head. Nothing helps. I am at a total loss and am considering perming the back of my head just to make it more even!! Grr!!!!

Any ideas anyone? Anyone have the same problem?

Hi Lydia, I have the same problem. I fogured it was because my hair was too long. I got it layered today and it seems to be doing a lot better. I would be interested to hear suggetions as well. Good luck

Having a great haircut is the foundation of a beautiful head of curls. Next comes the products and technique. My hair prefers the more natural products and cleansing with the natural soap bars. After that, it's the technique you use--I rake and scrunch product in soaking wet hair. Then scrunch out some water (and product) with a Curls Like Us towel. My hair is too short to plop or wrap in a towel to get it out of the way when I dress and do my makeup. It pulls out the curls at the front on the sides.

Lyia-
YOUR hair is gorgeous!
I have the same problem as you. The ice queen method has helped. Basically you do your condish rinse upside down, you also scrunch in the condish. Once the shower you add your curl creme etc with your head still upside down, then put your head upright and scrunch in your curl creme etc in. This helps to make sure you are getting the back of your hair. HTH!
Lydia - I love your hair first off. I also have the same issue as does my 2 year old dd (I originally thought mine was due to damage and then she came along with the same curl pattern). We both have tighter curls even some 3b towards the front and underneath but the crown often is less curly for us both. I think for some curlies its just our curl pattern. I do think the ice queen method and tweaking our product application helps encourage curls at the root there.

To get good curl formation in the back of my head, I have to scrunch in product upside down as well as right side up. I also have to diffuse upside down at least for a couple of minutes. I've noticed I don't get near the curl formation if I do everything right side up.

I agree with what everyone else has said thus far - scrunching upside down (whether it is styling product and/or conditioner) will help. Also, when you put styling products in, be sure you get the back of your hair - I have found using mysteryflavored's method helps (it's a way of sectioning your hair without having to fuss with combs and so forth).

I think your hair is beautiful! I have a similar problem, but mine is the very top of my head. (underneath is quite curly, but I have a seciton at the very top that is just wavy) I finally came to terms that this is just my hair, and I need to love it how it is. That is part of what the CG method is all about. (thanks Tiffany!)

That being said, Tiffany's method of putting products on IN THE SHOWER, with my head flipped over has helped immensely.
