Aloe vera gel makes my hair hard and tangled?

The first time I used FOTE in my hair, it gave my hair wonderful body and volume. Every time since, it has made my hair feel crunchy, hard, and tangled. I've tried using a lot of FOTE, a little FOTE, 50/50 mixed with water and sprayed, etc. and always get the same results. Does this say anything about my hair needing a special treatment or something? Or is it possible for hair to hate AVG?

I have a lot of fine 2c (maybe 3a) hair.
Does it do that even after you crunch it out? If so, then yes, your hates AVG. It's not for everybody, although it's weird that your hair responded to it well that first time. Some folks do better with it scrunched into wet hair, others prefer to apply it to dry hair. And others just hate it every which way.

If my hair hates it straight, does that mean I have to avoid it as an ingredient in products? It looks like it's in everything!
No, I don't think you have to avoid it in products, although you will, of course, need to find that out for yourself through experimentation (so you can earn your curly girl badge of honor)! AVG is different from the liquid aloe that's in products.

Let's see what other anti-aloe people chime in with.

My hair has a love/hate relationship with straight aloe vera gel. I initially had great hair days with it in wet hair, but it sort of went downhill after a few months. The one time I used it on dry hair was a VERY bad experience (think lots of frizz, tangles, crunch).

I don't use it straight anymore, mostly because I'm using KCCC every wash. Of course this has AVG in it, and my hair loves it

I tried aloe on dry hair over top a product the other day & it seemed to do just fine. But when I use it on wet hair, it sucks away all moisture & dries out my hair.
My hair loves aloe in most stylers and conditioners but absolutely hated CJ Aloe Fix no matter how I used it. It felt like every drop of moisture was being sucked out of my hair. Maybe there's another ingredient my hair didn't like? Go figure.

As for just FOTE AVG, the only time I don't like it is when sometimes on dry hair, straight gel on top of certain other products causes it to be hard and crunchy and won't scrunch out. It's the combination that seems to cause it because it doesn't always happen.

Another product, Darcy's Botanicals Natural Coils Curling Jelly, does to my hair what aloe does straight. Its second ingredient is aloe. Its third is glycerin.

But I've since found out that my hair likes glycerin in a dry climate.

FOTE gave me the tangly/crunchies too, but I don't think aloe is the culprit. Isn't there a salt in that stuff? (Tetrasodium EDTA, or something? I gave mine away so I don't recall). And other ingredients, too.

AOMM doesn't affect me the same way -- my hair likes that stuff. And even KCCC -- though disliked by my hair for different reasons -- affected it very differently than FOTE. Bot AOMM and KCCC have a fair amount of aloe in them. Of course, they both have other ingredients, as well, so pinpointing the culprit can be tough.....

Wurly and proud!

Have any of you tried to put AOMM in dry hair? LOL, it was worse than Aloe on dry hair for me. Dude, the evil crunch from the netherworld.

I couldn't figure out Aloe, until I read helloitsio's blog post. That method works great for me. And she's right, theraneem aloe is almost a total different product from FOTE aloe. I'm gonna have to order some more theraneem.

Oh I love Aloe how is it that no one has mentioned jillipoo's blog post about this mysterious ingredient?http://jillipoo.blogspot.com/2009/08...oundtable.html It has a little bit of everything it can even act like Protein for some due to the amino acids. It is a remarkable ingredient!

ETA: to the OP just because your hair dislikes FOTE doesn't mean it wouldn't like many other products that contain Aloe like KCCC, CJ. It's all about formulation and how ingredients are combined! You may need it combined with some Butters or Oils for it to work for you.

I forgot about that! Maybe the ones who get dry and tangly from it have protein issues, too - the way they describe it sounds kind of the same . . . .

Goober I read her blog post and even with my dislike for aloe I was soooooo tempted to buy some theraneem.

I have to tell you it was so weird. The theraneem seemed to absorb more. They were similar, but they act as different on my hair as AOMM does compared to regular Aloe.

My temptation was to go out and buy that texture line gel she's using.
