Hard Water at College... Need suggestions for Products!!!

Hello Everyone! I have just recently come to college and realized the water here is alot harder then at home? I'm not quite sure though. Does hard water make your hair drier? Or I guess what is the definition of hard water vs soft water? All I know is that here my hair has been really dry and supppeeerrr frizzy and the water here is just not the same as what I had at home. None of my produccts are working like my KCCC or any of the stuff in my siggie. I tried doing countless deep treatments and an ACV and nothing works. my hair is just really frizzy, dry, and undefined and its driving me nuts!!!! Does anyone have any suggestions at all about different products for what I think is hard water? Or suggestions at all? Please Please Please I need major help. Thanks!

There's two possibilities, really:

1. It's not the water but the area you're in that's causing your problems. If you've moved from a semi-humid area to a really dry or really humid area, your hair will get frizzy and odd. Have you moved a long way to go to college? If deep treatments and so forth haven't helped, I would suspect the problem is not the water but a change in weather.

2. If it's hard water, you will notice two major symptoms. First, that you get a lot of limescale build-up on your taps and shower heads and so forth. It can take a couple days to a few weeks for this to become obvious. Second, you will find that things lather less easily - so if you're using a body wash with sulfates in it, it will take more to feel like you're using enough with hard water. The effect hard water on your hair tends to first feel more like build up than frizz - at least in my experience. The frizz comes later as the mineral deposits from the hard water block out moisture from your hair shaft.

There are ways of dealing with hard water build-up, though - many people swear by baking soda scrubs. You can also get a AO swimmer's shampoo which apparently removes mineral deposits from hard water. The normal way to deal with it - ie, get a water softener or a filter for your shower head - are obviously impossible in a halls setting. You can often counter-act frizz from hard water with a cool rinse at the end of your shower, and it may be enough to up the moisture in your routine. I live in an area with extremely hard water, and a cool rinse and extra moisture have been plenty for me, but my hair is odd like that. Hope that helps some. :-)

Thanks for your answer! I only moved 2 hours and 15 minutes away and I'm still in the same state. Any suggestions for stylers?

Even if you're near home, in theory a shift in weather could cause the frizzies. I dunno about you, but the weather where I am is going autumnal - dryer and cooler - which is making my hair life difficult.

I honestly don't know what sort of stylers would work best - in theory, a really super hold gel would be best to keep the frizzies at bay, but as far as I know BRHG is pretty heavy duty. Perhaps just using more? I'm not particularly familiar with CG stylers in the US, unfortunately- you may have to wait for others to come by with suggestions.

I posted the following on another thread for someone having the same problem in the dorms. I know you said you tried ACV but I needed to use it more than once in a row to help remove the hard water deposits. Here is what I did to get my hair back to normal shape:

1. I washed twice with AO low poo (the desert one, sorry, I can't remember the name)

2. ACV rinse (2 cup water, 2 tb vinegar; you can do 1 cup 1tb if you have short hair)

3. Conditioned but left it on for minimum of 15 minutes.

I repeated the above the very next day. When my hair dried, it was soft with less frizz (I'm never 100% frizzfree b/c I touch my hair too much ) and back to normal. Then I did an overnight deep treatment (I put a deep moisturizing conditioner on dry hair, covered with a showercap, slept in it, and washed the next day) because I was sure all the buildup was gone and I needed to rebuild moisture levels.

I find if you have hard water buildup, it also cause other products to buildup on your hair. So it may take several treatments to get rid of it. After two treatments my hair was squeaky clean, which is why I then did the overnight moisture treatment.

I have awful water and always do a final rinse with good (bottled) water- and never use tap water on my hair for second say spritzs. Theoretically I am reducing mineral build-up on my hair. At least my hair isn't in as bad a shape as my shower head or the shower walls which are covered with mineral build-up that can only be removed with a razor blade!
