Default What exactly is a Flour sack towel?

I have seen so many people using this, but have no clue what it is. How does it help the hair? I googled it, but didn't see anything refering to hair. And can you get in a store or do you have to order online.

TIA, Tanya

It's a type of kitchen towel. It's better than regular towels for hair because it's smooth and won't cause frizz. You can find them at places like Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Flour sacks are awesome, they are a crucial part of my routine. I love the ones from Target. The best part is that they are cheap! I think they come in a pack of 6 for about $5. I use two daily, one to scrunch out extra moisture with after my shower, and then one to plop in. Love them!!!!! If for some reason they don't work for you, they are great for cleaning, so it is win-win either way!

Thanks for the reply. Are they called flour sack? How would I know what to look for? I have a fiber towel and some sort of towel and some sort of towel made for curls...don't remember the name.

Is this the same as microfiber towels?

I'm glad you asked what these are because I don't know either. Even though people are saying they are cheap enough at Target, I wonder if there's a link to see what they look like?

I agree, Tiffany got me hooked on flour sack towels! Microfiber towels are too thick for me and cause frizz and while flour sacks are smaller and thinner they work great for me. I use one in the shower to soak out extra moisture and then plop with additional one. They are at Target 6 for $5 and you'll probably know when you see them. They are those thin white towels that your grandmother probably used to clean the kitchen, hah. Here's a picture to help....

I looked for them at Target but couldn't find them...what section are they in?

I also tried looking for them on target.com. Nothing.

Yes, actually I was personally considering buying them here: http://www.amazon.com/Now-Designs-Fl...ref=pd_sim_k_1

If I don't find them at Target.

They are dish towels. The really really cheap looking ones. Off white thin non terry cloth. If you are old enough they were the only kind we had as kids. They get wet real fast. They are next to the nicer terry towels off in the corner. Usually sell them in packs of 4 or 5. Kinda small for me to plop with but you can sew them together if they're too small.

I found them in the kitchen towel section at Target. In fact, the location right near me has a whole mess of them on clearance right now for $4.88 a pack (I think they were $5.99 previously). I LOVE my flour sack towels and use them for scrunching out excess water as well as plopping and draping around my neck to catch any excess drips-they are lightweight and perfect for this. I've even used them to wrap up my hair during a DT before I put a cap on so I'm not covered with honey and oil by the end

I got mine at Walmart in the section that sells dish towels. 5 for under $5.00. I use it in the kitchen though, hadn't thought of using it for my hair...went back to using T-shirts which I like better than the microfiber one I bought. Will try the flour sacks for my hair as I have a couple new unused ones.

Hmmm...I'm glad you asked this too because I always wondered what they were. But now that I know how cheap they are and where to get them, I will definitely try to get some this week! I've been using t-shirts for plopping and getting out excess water out of my hair but I've been so obsessed with trying new things lately! LOL

Took me several trips to Walmart to finally find flour sack towels, and then I came home without any, because to me they seemed rough. At least they seemed rough compared to the microfiber cloths I made to use on curly hair.... I can certainly see how they'd seem smooth compared to any terry loop towel though, microfiber or not.

So here's the story: I just happened upon some very smooth twill microfiber fabric at Walmart, before I ever found the flour sack towels, so I bought the fabric, cut it to the size I wanted, and zig-zagged around all the edges.

To make a long story even longer, I bought 3 different colors of the microfiber fabric, and 2 of the colors work great - very absorbent, and very quick drying. The 3rd color though - apparently it's either woven too tightly to absorb moisture, or has some kind of permanent finish on it that causes water to bead up and roll off - those were worthless to use on my hair! If any of you still have a fabric dept in your local walmart, you know that the fabric description on the end of the bolts isn't terribly specific... these just said Microfiber in big bold letters, and silly me, I assumed they were all the same. I shoulda checked to make sure they all were as absorbent as the first bolt I picked up. (I"m thinking that fabric would make a good raincoat...)

I was originally going to buy the Curl-Ease towel, but after seeing it at Bed, Bath and, Beyond I realized it was basically a glorified Flour Sack Towel. I wanted the cute pink Curl-ease, but instead bought the 5-pack of flour sack towels from Wal-mart and some pink Rit dye. I'll make my own cute pink plop towels

Where in Walmart did you find yours? I went today and only saw microfiber towels (and other terry towels) in the aisle with the kitchen towels. I asked an employee but he was like "uh...what?" LOL
I ended up getting a 2-pack of waffle weave microfiber towels but I'm afraid if I use it it will cause frizz. Thinking about trying Target tomorrow and returning these.

I *just* got some at Target and had a little trouble finding them. They're with other kitchen towels and the package doesn't say "flour sack". BUT...the little sign over the rack said "flour sack" so I knew for sure they were the right ones. I love 'em too, they're great for plopping b/c they're light weight and tie easily.

Tried the Tiffany (Struttswife) plopping method today with flour sack towel and it worked great. Folded it diagonally and was able to wrap it around and tie in front.

And, sidebar: They are great for drying glasses b/c they don't leave lint on the glass!
