Exclamation Babying your ends ? Huh.

I always read on blogs and here on NC people saying I "baby my ends" and everytime I wonder what do you guys actually do to "baby your ends" . I am mostly 3c and my ends are horrible . I only straightening my hair once in a while ; on special occasions & once I had to go to the salon twice about 3weeks or a month a part and I got my hair trimmed and the stylist mentioned that my she had just trimmed my hair and that I needed a trim again ; no matter how much I trim they keep coming back . I dont know whats causing this and I dont know what to do . And I want to cut all the split ends off , and that means a whole lot, but my mom is refusing because my hair grows fast and when I was younger before I relaxed and now its almost BSL for like the 100th time .

Can you guys describe how you guys are "babying your ends" and what you do to retain length and is it possible for me to get more length and cut the ends later, that my mom idea ; but I want my hair to be healthy now and I dont want the split ends to go all the way up the hair shaft .!

Good question! I baby my ends by

- using a slippery conditioner do the detangling work, then finger detangling
- leaving in condtioner and applying a butter or oil over conditioner when wet - either castor oil, or Hairveda Almond Glaze or Qhemet Olive Honey Hydrating Balm or pumpkin seed butter.
- Protecting hair during sleep - silk pillowcase, pineapple puff or large twists.

I take care of my ends by adding moisture once during the day to the last 1/3 of my hair. I then apply a moisturizer to my entire head and add castor and/or EVOO to the last 1-1/2". I always sleep on a satin pillowcase and sometimes sleep in a satin bonnet.

I go curly in between and straighten regularly. I use The conditoner by PM for a leave in, put about a pearl size amount halfway down my hair and then i spray on a heat detangler by PM also. I also use a PM mousterizing poo/condish on a regular basis in between my other stuff. I havent had a hair cut for 4-5 months and i have no split ends luckily. My hairs obvousily longer than before but i also massage my scalp sometimes at nite to stimilate hair growth ( plus take GNC Ultranourish vits ).

I baby my ends by:

- adding Camellia & jojoba oils to my leave-in and applying that to my ends.

- by using Curl Friends leave-in on top of that. Its a creamy butter-like product that really moisturzing and conditioning.

-using KCCC. Any other gel isn't as moisturzing.

What my hair looks like if I don't do all that is my hair from the root to about two inches from the end tooks great and defined. The last 2 inches of hair looks like a frizzy mess and is really dry. Now that I do what I listed above my hair has dramatically improved my legnth retention and my hair looks more uniform.

I also baby my ends by wearing a satin scarf at night and bunning my hair regularly.

I baby my ends by putting my condish on from the ends up, so they get the most of it. Then I put my leave in only on the bottom half of my length. Finally, I baby my ends with regular trims.

I baby my ends by keeping in mind they are the oldest part of my hair and thus the weakest. If you want growth got to pay attention to those ends. I:

1. Keep them regularly trimmed, especially if you use heat and see split ends. I don't use heat but I do trim them when I see a single strand knot. Tough love, some have to go, it will protect them more in the end.

2. Put the most or best product on them while still wet. Leave a little in, and also seal with oil. This seals in moisture, keeps hair together so it can't split and also creates a barrier between your hair and the environment, like rough clothes it touches, which can cuase breakage.

3. Do protective styles that covers ends or hold them up above the collar, for all the reasons above. Buns are one.

Thanks for all the input and health ; I used the GNC vits & it worked on my hair but I got an allergic reaction on my scalp and I broke out .

I also have a problem with shedding ; and my hair sheds alot . Sometimes when I straightening my hair about the 4th day it sheds alot more and I use that as a hint/cue that my hair is dirty and that I need to wash but it doesnt seem to help much . Any ideass?

I'm not surprised that you'd shed more if your hair grows as fast as you say. That sounds like you have an accelerated growth cycle, to me.

But if you are concerned, just do what logically seems best for your hair. As in, if you feel it sheds a lot some days after the flat iron, lay off the heat for a few weeks. Don't do the things you notice cause problems.

Oil over a leave in is an excellent suggestion that I've found keeps my very dry-prone hair soft and moisturized. I like coconut oil a lot, easy to find and it absorbs easily so I'm not greasy later (and I tend to be heavy handed). I use it over a cheap Suave condish (because I'm avoiding the other leave ins I own and haven't found a real condish yet) and I get really soft hair that stays soft for a few days (good!).
