New Gel Idea!

Has anyone tried making okra gel? I'm thinking of giving it a try...

I love okra, I'd rather eat it fried! LOL. I think okra gel might be too stinky.

It'd be awesome to gross out my hubby with though. He totally grosses out at the FSG!!! Veggie goo doesn't gross me out for some reason, but animal goo makes me nauseous.

And my hair hates avg

Yes I consider myself obsessed with my hair.
He he he...yeah I think it sounds gross, but how much more disgusting than FSG can it be?? Besides, like you goobernut, I LOVE to gross out my husband with my hair concoctions!

I've never eaten it before- how bad does it smell?

Oooh not that bad. I say try it. Heck, you might stumble upon the next great thing. Though I do think it might go bad faster than FSG. Also, a little bit more difficult to distract the gelatinous goo.

But Go for it! And then let me know how it turns out ha ha. My hubby says okra has a distinct smell, I think he's just being picky. Doesn't smell like much to me..

I'm going to pick some up in a few hours and hopefully I'll know if I've got something worth talking about later tonight...either way I'll report back!

I had heard of using the mucilage from okra in hair products before. Also, I just saw a recipe for okra gel on another blog. There is also a commercial okra gel called Fred Okra Fibre Gel. The market doesn't seem saturated with okra gels though. So let us know how yours comes out.

http://knapsgirl.blogspot.com/2009/0...your-hair.html
  1. Slice 2 to 4 Okra
  2. Add the Okra to 150ml of boiling water.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon of Blue Malva or Marshmallow herbs
  4. Let the mixture boil up really good
  5. Turn off the heat once boiled
  6. Leave it to cool until it forms a slimy and gelatinous liquid.
  7. Remove the boiled Okra & herbs from the liquid
  8. Smooth the nutrient rich slimy gel into a clean and sterilized jar
  9. Store in the fridge when you're not using it
  10. Use within 2 to 3 days or add a synthetic preservative to increase it's shelf life.

Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
So I tried it last night.

The resulting substance was not as thick as FSG, but it was almost like a syrup. When I had it on my hands it seemed to reside in a much more thin layer on my skin, but was VERY slippery. It gave my hair quite a bit more crunchy hold than the FSG, which is not what I'm looking for, but it seemed to work nicely.

Here is what I used:

2c water
8 okra sliced lengthwise

I basically boiled them until they fell apart (about 20 min), then I boiled them for another 10 minutes or so. After that, I let the mixture sit for an hour or so (enough to try the original 'Buns of Steel' bleh), then I strained the mixture through a flour sack towel. By this time the okra was so softened that when I strained it through the towel, I got every last bit of goo I think that was possible. In fact the okra started disintegrating through the holes into the towel- that mixture was VERY sticky. I added a pinch of epsom salt to the mix when I was completely finished.

It was an interesting experiment, but I don't think it beats FSG for me, especially since I had to spend $3 for the okra at a specialty store.

LOL belasuna, you're the reason I tried this. In another post you referred to the mucilage in flax and I didn't know what it was, so I read about it and researched other plants that had excesses of it. If I recall, there were a few more that might be worth trying...

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth. Doesn't it flake once dry? Could you not use the "snot" (forgive me, LOL!) straight from the raw okra without having to boil it? Although it would probably be difficult to get the seeds out, I suppose. I've never noticed it having a particular smell when cutting it up.

If you decide to try other plants, don't even think about rubbertree plants or anything else in the ficus family, LOL!

You know maybe your could mix the flax gel and okra gel for extra slip since I find that the FSG could often use more slip. Plus there is the added bonus of tremendous nutrient value. Okra has lots B6 and folic acid, both of which are extremely good for hair. That could be your new product. Don't think that exists already.

BTW, did the okra gel flake at all. I like the fsg because it doesn't leave flakes (for me at least).

edit: Just thinking maybe frozen okra would work. They are flash frozen at point of ripeness. I know the frozen okra produces enough slime for gumbo (when I go through the trouble of making it). And definitely more cost effective.

Love hearing about experiments. The okra doesn't sound like any more trouble than flax seed or aloe vera gel. And they're all natural plant derived products which is great!
Keep on experimenting everybody!

auntnett- Actually if I could get the method down, I think this would be easier than FSG! You could certainly try to scoop the goo straight out of the okra, but I think it would be pretty difficult. I actually experimented with a couple of techniques, I only originally published the one above to avoid sounding like a total weirdo! However, one of the other promising extraction methods I tried was to add the proportions listed above into a pressure cooker for about ten minutes. When I opened the pressure cooker up, the okra was so soft that it almost completely fell apart when my finger touched it. I think it might be possible to add more water and cook it until it is complete goo, maybe puree it, and then filter it. I just mention this because it might be a way to get a higher concentration, thicker gel. LOL, don't worry, I've trimmed enough ficus trees to see what comes out of those!

belasuna- I was considering purchasing some frozen okra since that sounds like it is more readily available. I think it would probably be fine. I just went for fresh because I was trying to reduce any possibility of failure! I didn't know it would be cheaper (although that makes sense). I think mixing the okra with the flax is a REALLY good idea- since I just washed my hair last night, I'll have to wait a few days to see how it works, but I think it will also help with the hold on the FSG without being overpowering. The okra didn't flake at all and I think I overstrained it, so I'm not worried about that.

The new technique sounds promising. If you extract tons of goo then you can add all sorts of other goodies without fear of watering it down. Plus the gel will still have a good proportion of slip and holding power. Keep us posted.

This is awesome! After telling my SO that someone had tried making gel with okra he made an ick face and said I should stick with the FSG. Well, I'm not one to pass up an opportunity to gross him out so today I went and got some frozen okra. Mwa ha ha ha ha! This sounds like a lot of fun. If it does offer more hold than FSG that will just be an added bonus.

Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny
Hope you have better results than I did. I had better luck with flax seeds! If you want to try the Bottecelli Botanicals version (Styling Mudd), I have some for sale on the swap board. Good luck!
I really liked the okra gel. I used frozen okra, wrong time of year for fresh, boiled it in some water until it looked slimy, then strained it. It is very thin, but very cohesive. I added a little bit of honey and a few drops of lemon essential oil. My curls are banging! they are clumpy and well formed. My hair is soft and there is no frizz. My hair has no odd odor. Next time, i will add pectin or gelatin as a thickener, other than that I am sold. Also, it was a lot easier to strain than FSG.
